I get this too but what happens with mine is the Maxis logo animation appears and then freezes. I get this in terminal:
fixme:imm:ImmGetOpenStatus (0x205608): semi-stub
It starts appearing in terminal when the game starts and then continues until the game freezes.
I have Ubuntu 9.04 64bit
Wine 1.1.27
Intel Core i7 920 2.66ghz
6GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia 9400GT
and I am testing a second monitor on my PC right now so i have dual monitor.

I'm getting the same problem as well, downgrading Wine does not work either. Time for a bug report methinks, although I have also asked on the Ubuntu forums.

Old thread but I was having this issue too..

Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit)
Wine 1.2.2
i7-950 3.06GHz
6GB RAM
GTX 260

The fix appears to be using these two command line switches:
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32

..and setting your resolution to whatever. Just having the -r switch does not do the trick.
