That was a long time ago. I have given up now. This was also before Desktop Effects were standard I think. I havent tried Stalker in a couple of Ubuntu releases and a handful of Wine releases, so it might have bettered itself:) Its common knowledge that Wine + Effects doesnt add up... I've also had the same problem.
