How did you install it? Using the installer on the cd? I had to copy the folders manually. Sounds like it's not finding one of your PAK files. Do you have pak0.pak, pak1.pak, and pak2.pak (all lowercase!!!) in your baseq2 folder?

Had the same problem, but that was quite a long time ago so I can't remember how I fixed it anymore

Try this...

cd %your quake 2 install path%
wine quake2.exe -opengl

if the game runs slow, try using the same resolution as the desktop; or you can always run the game in another X display. (Xrandr issue)
