i had the same problem in ubuntu 12.04 , but i switched to fedora 17 32 bits and it works , had some problems with the chat and some crashes , but its totally playable!

in my experience it really has to do with what distro are you using, as i said before, fedora 17 32 bits works really great, other server that i recommend you to try is rgc (for dota of course xD)
