RE: TF2 Horrid Performance

I'm having the same issue. Used to run fine. I have a 8800 GTS (G92) and now I can't get better than 12-15fps on settings that used to get me 30-50fps. I turned all the settings down and lowered the resolution down to 640x480, and it went up to 12-20fps. I normally run on 1920x1080. Something has changed in either wine or TF2 that has absolutely killed performance. I don't think it was the nvidia drivers either. I updated wine, tried playing, and THEN upgraded specifically because performance was so bad. Both x86_64-169.12 and x86_64-173.14.05 have the same issues. I even tried dx9 just for kicks and performance there is as bad as ever, even worse than it is now under 8.1. Others suggested setting GLSL to "disabled". I did and it helped some but not much. I feel it was just treating the symptoms. Something has really killed performance in the latest release.

Runs perfectly fine for me with the new WINE 1.0 RC3. Using CentOS 5.1 with NVIDIA 173.14.05 drivers on 1920x1200 resolution. So no, this is NOT a regression on WINE. Did you compile your own WINE, or did you grab a packaged version of WINE? Most of the problems I've seen are from people grabbing WINE through some package managers. Best to compile WINE yourself.

Sorry for the triple post. Apparently appdb doesn't like less than symbols.

I meant to say that I'm getting less than 15 frames per second most of the time. The game is unplayable.

I use an 8800gt with amd64 Gentoo. This card has never been stellar with wine, probably because of dodgy 8 series support by nvidia, but it has never been this bad.

Back in the day, my 7800gtx ran this game very smoothly with wine 0.9.55 or so.

For me (Athlon64 3800+, Gentoo, various versions of wine up to 1.1 so far) the Steam window itself eats CPU while visible. If ever I forget to close or minimize the Steam window, I end up with unplayable frame rates for all Steam games. I don't recall when exactly this started, but it came with a Steam client update. Hope this helps.
