As I said I run gentoo, thus _everything_ is compiled from source. (I run no bin packages)
In a situation of performance degradation the positive ID of a regression is done by identifying a single instance of performance loss (if the assumption that no configuration changes have been made).
A single ID of positive performance does _not_ negate the possibility of a regression.
Although its certainly possible me and the second poster both made a similar change on our machine which caused the issue, it is harder to believe as linux users are usually OCD about changes made to their systems (at least I am)
