I believe it also crashes steam because what's really happening is wineserver crashing untidily.
In the update notes, Valve mentioned something about service checking. If you ran Steam under wine as WinVista at any time, that means the service got installed; could that be the problem?
This theory is substantiated by the fact that at least in my case, steam does not start immediately; instead, I run the command for steam, and I have to kill "services.exe" before the steam "Logging in username..." window appears.
