I really doubt this is related to the current Wine release since 1) Wine 1.2.1 works perfectly on my main box equipped with a nVidia card 2) lots of Wine versions worked perfectly on my laptop until Ubuntu 10.04 (and now 10.10) came out. If you think it might be useful to try Wine 1.3x anyway (maybe because the problem might lie in the Wine graphic drivers interaction, I have no idea!) I'll try that as well, I haven't so far because the site clearly labels those as beta packages.
And no, unfortunately the radeon driver doesn't work (tried it before installing the proprietary fglrx driver).
