I ended up swapping out the HD3850 with the ATI binary drivers, and switching back to the built in HD4200 IGP that was on the mobo. Using the radeon open source along with xorg-edgers stuff works perfect and fine, just have to turn off the pixel and vertex shader. So looks like its more so related to the ATI drivers (go figure, been nothing but problems there)
