For me the problem was that one of the files in the Starcraft folder is not writable. I didn't know which one so I just made all *.log *.txt *.dat files world writable. I don't suspect there is a major security issue with this.

$ cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Starcraft
$ chmod 777 *.log *.txt *.dat
$ wine StarCraft.exe

Should work now. I suspect that the files in question are bnupdate.log bncache.dat BnetLog.txt. Anyone else please experiment. I hope this helps.

Do you have any compiz/desktop effects activated? I had the same problem on Ubuntu 8.10 and found out it would only connect if I turned off all desktop effects
