Ah, I found the solution from another comment. In Steam uncheck the File -> Settings... -> In-Game -> "Enable Steam Community In-Game" checkbox.
Now I can get to the menu and set all my options and search for servers, etc. But when I connect to the server it crashes and repeats this error message several times:
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"DbgHelp.dll": /usr/bin/..bghelp.dll.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory
