Have you tried using the Windows LIVE Disabler? It was the thing that let me actually load the game! (Although I have other errors, the game does load now)

No need to install .NET3/.NET35. Use the Xliveredist from the DVD,which should install, and add the vcrun2008(winetricks),xlive.dll and msasn1.dll from dll-files.com to \system32. At least that's what worked for me.

I also had problems installing the gfwupdate at first. However, it installed fine after I set override comctl32 (builtin).
After installing gfwupdate and 1.7 patch, I set comctl32 back to (native, builtin) as it was before and everything is (more or less) fine.
I assume the howto says to "winetricks cc580" for a reason, but it got in the way of installing gfwupdate in my case. Perhaps this should be noted in the howto.
