I have tried this with both the 0 and 1 option, it increases FPS a bit, but makes the game look ugly, and still lags quite a bit (with a 9600 GT.)

+mat-hdr-level 0 gave me a big frame rate increase. However, erasing all of the shadows really steals from the game however, it put my frames around 20-30fps which is more bearable. In my opinion, the cost of ambiance is actually not worth that frame rate increase, but works if you are so inclined.
+mat-hdr-level 1 did not give me a frame rate boost, but still took away the ambiance of shadows. I found this to be the worst of both.
I'll have to try this on my gaming rig once I get back to it. Thanks for the tip though, this is very useful.
