RE: System locks up and first person is upside down

I get the same thing on occasion, except the only thing I can move is my mouse, but I'm not able to click on anything. As soon as I get no response from the CAPS LOCK key, then it's time to hit the reset button. Quite a few have been saying that there are inadequacies with the ATI cards with regards to L4D, and NVIDIA seems to be the better choice.
The other peculiar thing I experience is that my first player view shows up with the hands upside down (I'll see if I can post a screen shot later) - the rest of the game is normal. I've gotten used to it that I haven't bothered toying with the settings so much because things are working OK just the way they are though they could be better.
ATI Radeon HD 3850 - 512MB DDR3 RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHZ
4GB DDR2 RAM 830MHZ
Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit
WINE version 1.1.27 (I've tried 1.1.39/38/36 and they didn't even allow for the game to start past menu selection - 1.1.27 gets me passed the MOTD issue)
I have the L4D launch options set as:
-w 800 -dxlevel 70 -console -novid -refresh 120 -heapsize 1572864 -high -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noipx -nojoy
