I already have Tahoma fonts installed, I installed them prior to installing Steam. But I dont have problems with CSS any more. I dont crash, I dont disconnect, and my fps is nearly equal to what it would be under M$.
There are alternatives to patching. I hear you can use a ClientScheme.res to adjust the fonts to prevent crashing, which is attached to the same thread I linked you earlier.
In my case, I apply four patches to the wine source, so I use the patch (coupled with HL2MP fixes).
