Which client was it? As far as I was aware there are only two native ventrilo clients, both in the alpha stages of development, one using Pulse and the other OSS.

And I can confirm that the Mangler client works, sending and receiving audio, while playing Counter-Strike: Source with sound.
Tested just minutes ago on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, the only installed distro I have that uses PulseAudio, as the ALSA code has not yet be implemented in Mangler.
