What works
nothingĀ

What does not

installer crashes during installation with:

"1628: Failed to complete installation."

What was not tested
everything beside the installer

Additional Comments

Tried to install like described in the HOWTO and several other combinations. Nothing worked.
I didn't try to build wine myself like described here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17971#c0

NOTE:
* In compare to Wine version 1.1.23 the error "1628: Failed to complete installation." happens during installation and it seems like everything gets installed - but at the end SlingPlayer 1.5.1 is unable to start saying, that is misses some "localized resources"
* there was no difference with or without using native qcap & quartz

Upgrading Wine

Upgrading Wine deletes necessary registry entries. This can be avoided by running wineboot after the upgrade, and before running SlingPlayer.

You can also disable this by running

echo disabled > ~/.wine/.update-timestamp

HOWTO

Tested in Ubuntu 12.04 under Wine 1.5.12.

  1. Install winetricks.
  2. Run WINEARCH=win32 winetricks -q quartz gdiplus
  3. Copy a native 32-bit qcap.dll to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
  4. Add a native override for qcap to winecfg.
  5. Install SlingPlayer as normal.
  6. Run echo disabled > ~/.wine/.update-timestamp
  7. Run SlingPlayer.

You should now have a working SlingPlayer!

Note: A number of new bugs occur in Wine 1.5.13+. It is recommended to hold on to 1.5.12 to run this application.
