Old test results
The test results for this version are very old, and as such they may not represent the current state of Wine. Please consider submitting a new test report.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)

What works

  • Installation
  • Making movies
  • Watching movies
  • Sound (but not well)
  • Colors (as of wine version 1.4)
  • Full screen (when application is set to run in win9x in wine)

What does not

  • Getting the correct sound rate (honestly I have no idea how to correct this, seems to go too fast...maybe I don't have audio configured correctly for Wine 1.4 on Ubuntu 11.10)
  • Watching movies in the theater (3DMM crashed on me when I tried)

What was not tested

  • Adding scenes/characters/objects/anything to a new movie
  • Recording audio
  • Tutorials with Melanie
  • Expansions and mods

Additional Comments

I mount the disc image to a mounting point and have wine configured to use that mounting point as D:\
Unfortunately at the moment I'm stuck using XP in virtualbox to make movies in 3DMM, because the sound issue prevents me from using 3DMM in Wine. I'm hopeful that this will be fixed, considering the 256 color bug is no longer an issue as of Wine 1.4. I also need the stability, because the movie files can get quite big (and 3DMM crashed when I tried opening a movie in the theater room). So close to working, if 3DMM can run with stability and no sound issues, I probably wouldn't need virtualbox anymore!

HOWTO

These instructions apply to Wine 0.9.61

Prior to 0.9.61 3DMM will not run.

step 1.
from your windows install
zip up c:\Program Files\Microsoft Kids

step 2. on GNU/Linux, from a terminal after installing the latest release of wine (http://winehq.org/download)

type:

wine winecfg
this initializes the ~/.wine directory for first use - ok next...

mkdir "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files"
and...
unzip 'Microsoft Kids.zip' -d "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files"

then:
wget http://jeffz.name/3dmm.reg && wine regedit 3dmm.reg

and finally
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Kids/3D\ Movie\ Maker/ && wine 3DMOVIE.EXE

and it will run - but, the only caveat is that Wine's support for the type of audio that 3DMM outputs to windows isn't 100% so you will experience a crash

The workaround for this is either disable your audio in winecfg or from a windows install copy c:\windows\system32\msadp32.acm to your GNU/Linux install then
cp msadp32.acm ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/ && winecfg
when the winecfg dialog comes up, click on the libraries tab, add msadp32.acm in the field, set it to native only and click ok.

Wine 1.1.15 or newer relieves the requirement of using msadp32.acm from windows.

Colour issue
by Svip on Tuesday December 28th 2010, 17:20
I still cannot get around the colour issue, even using tricks from here:

wiki.winehq.org/256ColorMode

I wonder why this is completely unmentioned in this HowTo, it's like the biggest issue at all.
