HOWTO and Problem / Solution

Using wine 20040716 (the version of wine currently in debian unstable) I was able to install GTA3 with no problems. It was a simple case of (this also works in wine 1.0.0 perfectly):
1) Mounting the install CD
2) Doing wine /path/to/cdrom/Setup.exe
3) Follow on screen insructions

To play the game once installed:
1) Change to install directory
2) Insert and mount play CD
3) Doing wine gta3.exe
4) When the screen goes black click the left mouse button twice (or press Return twice) to bring up the game loading screen.
5) As long as you have no problems you should be playing the game.

To patch the game to version 1.1:
1) Download the patch
2) place it in the install directory
3) Do wine patchname.exe
4) Follow on screen instructions

A few issues I noticed:
1) The mouse is dodgy on the menus. It continually jumps to the middle of the screen.(but that doesn't matter too much the arrow keys work just as well)
2) The intro movie was jerky, but then again I think it was when I ran it in windows too.
*3) Areas with a lot of sound activity going on can cause the game to crash (the getaway from the bank job is one such instance). A partial workaround is to reduce the value of the following two lines in $HOME/.wine/config :

"SndQueueMax" = "12"

"SndQueueMin" = "8"

*This is somewhat outdated and doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. Plus they have done away with the wine config file.

Fix to 360 mouse problem.

I also found a problem with being unable to look past 180 and sometimes 270 degrees with the mouse. (bug 6971)

To fix the mouse problem, you need to apply a patch to the source code. You can find the source code to download here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241&package_id=77449 Just download it, and extract it. To do this, run this command from the directory where you downloaded the wine source:

tar jxpf wine-*version*.tar.bz2

Now you need to apply the patch, you can find the patch here: http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13153 Save that as "hack.diff", and place it in the source directory (the directory that was extracted when you extracted wine). Next, run this command:

patch -p0 <./hack.diff

Then run both of these commands (assuming that you have all of the dependencies needed, you can just run "sudo apt-get build-dep wine" in Ubuntu to get all of the dependencies.):

./configure

make depend && make && sudo make install

Finally to apply this patch you need to add the following to the executable:

env WINEFORCEMOUSEWARP=yes

It should look something like this in the application launcher:

env WINEFORCEMOUSEWARP=yes WINEPREFIX="/home/user/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTAIII\gta3.exe"

Or you can just run it in the terminal from your GTA III directory by running this command:

WINEFORCEMOUSEWARP=yes wine gta3.exe

That should fix the mouse look problem!

It also seemed to me that the games motion blur was not rendered properly in game by wine nor does it look good, so it might be a good idea to switch off the option Blur FX in game.

I modified the previous maintainers howto so the first two parts are his while the last parts are mine.

Keyaboard troubles
by shved on Sunday March 31st 2013, 8:03
Hello. All works fine, even mouse in menu. But I have trouble with my keyboard. Game can not correctly detect key code and when I trying to set control keys, game posts ? instead keyboard symbols. Arrows, space and many other special keys work fine, but qwerty - no.

Directx Error at Launch
by Vault Boy on Sunday June 17th 2012, 21:33
Tried multiple copies on Debian testing with Wine 1.5.5 and always get an error at launch saying GTA 3 requires at least directx 8.1. I used winetricks to install directx 9. Any suggestions?

Thanks for ideas and if this is an issue with r6 then my test data should be garbage and not gold.

Anyway thanks

>180 mouse
by Fu Bar on Wednesday June 23rd 2010, 18:43
Recent versions of wine (from about 1.1.23, I think) can be forced to use the mouse properly without patching. Simply set the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/AppDefaults/gta3.exe/DirectInput/MouseWarpOverride

to "force" (create the key & path if necessary) and viola! Problem solved.

You could also set it globally, but it might wreck some other programs, so don't do that.

Hidden packages
by JJB3 on Tuesday February 23rd 2010, 12:12
When I get a hidden package, and I get into the "safe house" the save menu does not appear. There is no way to save the game, or exit the safe house. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks, Dennis

Graphics/video problem
by JJB3 on Monday February 22nd 2010, 12:46
I installed GTA3 on wine. If I play it on an emulated desktop it will run OK, but I will lose mouse focus all the time. If I run full-screen the graphics are all scrambled. Is there some way to fix the scrambling?

Installed using PlayOnLinux. Did apply 1.1 patch and a no-cd fix. Menus+sound work correctly.

Does anyone know a solution to this?
Thanks Dennis

360 degree mouselook
by Zach Malpensado on Friday July 3rd 2009, 1:44
I've heard the patch doesn't work under newer versions of Wine.

Well, I haven't tried to compile a new version of Wine yet, but when I tried to patch it, I get this in the terminal:

~/Wine Source/wine-1.1.24$ patch -p0

Graphical Bugs
by jack on Monday June 22nd 2009, 6:09
Actually, GTA3 runs almost perfectly (minus the mouse bug) if you install DirectX9.0c on wine.

damn mouse look
by demoth on Tuesday June 16th 2009, 8:38
i downloaded wine 1.0 (because later wine is not patchable).
with patching there was a littlle problem : gcc said that relative paths with #include directive are not allowed(#include "../user32/user_private.h"), so i made a symbolic link from wine/dlls/user32/user_private.h to wine/dlls/dinput/user_private.h.
then build and installed good, but nothing changed since the patch (before patch it ran good but with mouse look problem).
i still cannot look around! thanks!

When I install this, there's no launcher on the desktop.
Also, when I run the exe, I get the rockstar logo, then nada.

Mouse hack
by W3ird_N3rd on Tuesday September 16th 2008, 7:57
The mouse hack looks very interesting, but GTA3 is not the only game where I've had problems with the mouse leaving the window. Wouldn't it be an insanely good idea to put this patch in the regular wine, possibly with an option in winecfg?

The patch....
by Justin Soulia on Saturday August 30th 2008, 8:52
It fails on the third chunk when patching wine as of wine-1.1.3. Not sure if this has any negative effect but I'll test it later.

Has anybody an idea why.

The mouse jumping to the center of the screen
by Justin Soulia on Monday August 4th 2008, 2:16
I haven't run this on WINE yet, but I believe that is an effect of the mouse warping hack. I guess that's a fair trade off though to make the mouse work right.

180 degree mouse movement fix
by mnn on Sunday June 22nd 2008, 16:17
What directory is the source directory? What is it the source of? I'm sorry if these are really stupid questions, but I don't know. Is it that I have to recompile Wine?

wine 0.9.40
by Pentti Hirvonen on Monday July 2nd 2007, 3:38
I'm using the wine version 0.9.40 but the textures in menu are simple yellow boxes and in game they are black and white boxes. And I can turn only 180° with mouse. And the colours are dark, every car is grey.

Garbled text in menu
by Provide on Tuesday March 20th 2007, 20:34
I still get garbled text using 0.9.32. The thing is, when I first bought the game for use in Windows, I had the same exact thing happen to me. Updating my video drivers solved the issue. Just throwing that out there although I'm not sure it'll help.
