What works
Installation works fine, no problems noted.
What does not
The game launches but some of the user interface does not show up; this is similar to what I have seen when trying to run the Sims 2, which is by the same company.

Pixel Shader
by Jeremiah Flerchinger on Thursday September 11th 2008, 13:34
Had to go to Wine Configuration -> Graphics and check Allow Pixel Shader (if supported by hardware). Otherwise could not get app to actually load. I don't think I had to do this previously to get to the same point.
Patch
by Eric Betts on Sunday August 10th 2008, 22:41
I used the patch attached to bug 13988
bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15361 and got the whole UI rendering and only noticed one slight problem with the creature parts' tooltip, but that's pretty minor.
This patch fixes most interface problems (except the descriptions issue) and the Z order.
It also adds support for drag&dropping images via a patch that was posted in 2007 and subsequently ignored.
Furthermore, it includes a small hack that uses a system call to wget to add support for dragging images from your _browser_ to the game. (Which is neat)
Keep in mind that this will clutter your /tmp/ with PNGs.
This patch may break other applications. Use with care and make backups.
To apply it, save it to a file and run patch -p1 < [filename] in the wine GIT root folder (for 1.1.2). Alternatively, run patch -p1, then paste the text directly in your terminal, and press CTRL-D to finish.
Screen goes into large blue blocks.

When I load up Spore Creature Creator Trial, the menu screen shows as big blue pixelated boxes. I can click things, but the windows are far beyond recognition.
Works, but with bugs
by Javier Berezovsky on Wednesday June 18th 2008, 18:53
I am proud to say I have succeeded at creating a fully finished ceature with the editor. It is a hard task seeing as there are a lot of bugs in the rendering. It seems that most of the issues are on 2d objects, such as the HUD, and many background textures show up on top of your model rather than underneath as they should. The features in the editor however, are more than fully functional.
I have managed to use every part, as well as tried a couple of the preset painting styles. Other than the HUD and rendering issues, it all works perfectly.
confirmation and exploration
by Eric Betts on Sunday June 15th 2008, 18:36
I had similar results installing and running using the development branch (git) of wine on 6-15-2008. I did have a slightly different interaction, as the creature creator button that is supposed to be just to the right of the center of the galaxy didn't launch the creature creator for me, it just zoomed in the galaxy a little on the first click, and zoomed it back out on the second click.
I did click around and found the bottom left has a spore-galaxy-logo, a link to settings, to Sporepedia, and a link to registration. Using the sporepedia, I clicked on a creature and loaded it, I then experience the same background over foreground graphical glitches. I was able to edit the creature and even found the creature parts were available, but invisible until mouseover.
After making some edits to the creature, I continued to click around in the top center area where I've seen buttons in the Spore demo videos and was able to get into the test drive mode. The UI continued to be invisible, but clicking in the lower part of the screen activated the creatures procedurally generated actions like dance, attack, etc.
