HOWTO
Far Cry HOWTO

Installation:

If you use the CD/DVD version run the setup program on the DVD or the first CD, and be sure it doesn't install Adobe Acrobat or DirectX.

Patching:

Version 1.4 is required for multiplayer and contains many engine improvements. The version downloaded from Steam is also 1.40.

http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/DownloadFile.aspx?dfId=3429

The 1.6 community patch is available and contains many bug fixes and improvements, particularly for multiplayer.

http://www.farcrypatch16.de/

Optional OpenGL Renderer:

There is an OpenGL renderer that has most of the visual effects present in the Direct3D one, but should run faster. To enable it, change "r_Driver" from "Direct3D9" to "OpenGL" in the 'system.cfg' file.

The older OpenGL renderer in version 1.0/1.1 exhibits less artifacts, whereas 1.33 and above have a problematic water shader, and portions of far-off terrain render incorrectly. Regardless of the game version, set the shadow quality to 'medium' and the lighting quality to 'high'.

Game freezes before it even starts
by Alessandro Sivieri on Tuesday June 15th 2010, 6:27
I have just installed Far Cry DVD, with 1.4 patch, under Wine 1.1.42, and I am unable to launch it: whenever I execute "wine FarCry.exe" (from the .wine subdir), it shows the splash screen and then freezes there, so that I have to kill FarCry.exe to regain terminal control.
I also tried it under wine 1.0.1 and wine 1.2rc3, but nothing has changed.

There was some advice on the Internet about FarCryConfiguration.exe, which seems to be executed by FarCry.exe (I can see it with ps, while FarCry is freezed), but its window is not shown.

Any idea?

Window error?
by Mike Black on Wednesday August 12th 2009, 14:34
Whenever I try to launch Far Cry from Steam with the r_Driver set to Direct3D9, nothing happens. However, if I set it to OpenGL, the game does load but it appears in an unframed window that only takes up 1/4 of the screen (and appears to only show 1/4 of the game).

Aside from Steam, I'm running it in an otherwise vanilla wineprefix.

Hello!
So here is all the info needed:
Mouse: logitech usb mice (G5)
Config: amd athlon fx57, ram 2Go, nvidia 7800GTX, ubuntu 9.04 64bit, wine 1.1.26.
D3D key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]

"DirectDrawRenderer"="gdi"

"Nonpower2Mode"="repack"

"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"

"PixelShaderMode"="enabled"

"RenderTargetLockMode"="auto"

"SoftwareEmulation"="enabled"

"UseGLSL"="enabled"

"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"

"VideoDescription"="NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX"

"VideoDriver"="nv4_disp.dll"

"VideoMemorySize"="512"

And it's not a laptop.
For console output, i've posted it on bugzilla (but not as attached file, so -headshot- from devs :D).
