HOWTO: Play Spore with minimal problems

The easiest way to play Spore without problems in Wine:

  • Make sure youre using wine version 1.1.26 or greater.
  • Start Spore using the -safe flag, e.g.

    wine Sporebin/Sporebin.exe -safe
  • If you have problems: In the Settings menu, in Graphics, set the Lighting to the lowest possible quality. This is a useful workaround for almost all in-game crashes.
  • Also: Turning off shadows allows paint mode to work properly.
  • Enjoy.

If you experience problems:

  • Make sure the current working directory you run this from is the SPORE folder, not the Sporebin folder - it'll spin forever looking for the data folder otherwise.
  • If it hangs on start-up then try to rename DMCmdPortalClient.dll(also a problem on Windows):

    mv Sporebin/DMCmdPortalClient.dll Sporebin/DMCmdPortalClient.dll.bak

  • Make sure you're passing the -safe flag.
  • If you are using PulseAudio: this is not officially supported by Wine, but some users have reported success using the ESD or OSS audio driver instead of the ALSA driver. This is configurable in winecfg. It is recommended that you do not use PulseAudio with Wine.

WARNING: Common pitfalls

If you experience graphical problems, please try to run your copy with the -safe flag, then file a bug with whether it works differently or not.

If you have problems with reaching the license server, please build from GIT or use this patch.

Experimenting with Offscreen Rendering mode (AKA: fbo vs backbuffer vs pbuffer)
If you're experiencing terrible performance, then playing with the OffscreenRendering key might be something you should try. Go to the key in the registry (use regedit) - http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys lists the useful Wine registry keys, where they are, and how to edit them.

Game crashes after a few minutes
by Hakut on Thursday May 30th 2013, 12:30
Every few minutes in the game ( Menus doesn't count in these minutes, it can stay like 30 mn in the menus with the game behind and not crash but crash after three minutes of gameplay.. )

The error log says that " 012f25c8 => DasmX86Dll.dll not found. "

I searched on the web and apparently it is just the debugger that is lacking. So there is another problem.

I ran it on safemode, with the graphics at the lowest (My computer can handle it by far even in high settings so it can't be the problem), nothing seems to work.

If somebody has a solution to make it work properly and not crash, I would appreciate it very much :)

Game Hangs
by Nick on Wednesday September 7th 2011, 10:21
I have been rather successful running spore with the -safe flag, but there are a few problems i would like to work out:

1. random hangs, the game freezes and I am unable to exit, forcing me to do a hard shutdown, this happens at random intervals as well, anywhere from 1-15 mins from starting the game
2. The game seems to freeze every time on exit, again forcing me to hard shutdown, the only way I seem to be able to exit spore at the moment is to Alt-Tab to the terminal it was launched from and hit Ctrl-C

A few more details on my over all situation. I started trying to run spore in Ubuntu 11.04 (without unity) but I could barely play before it would freeze, so I thought I'd try Xubuntu which was already running on my system, and It does seem to work much better, the first time running spore under Xubuntu I played straight through cell and creature stage before freezing

Fonts
by mautz on Sunday March 20th 2011, 8:38
Hi.

I'm using wine 1.3.16, but also tried the git version. Spore installed fine, but all the fonts in the game are missing. Tried it with Spore version 1.0 and 1.5.1. I also tried installing all fonts with winetricks, but nothing helped. I'm using an x3100 intel video card.

Maybe someone knows a solution...

My Spore didn't start. It hung on startup. Nothing appeared. Its process in System Monitor was running but it ate only 10.7 MB of RAM very long time. No game screen appeared.
It has ever playable before and works flawlessly like a charm, but now it is not.

And I can't start any wine application from Terminal it will show the error message like following:

wine client error:0: version mismatch 411/402.
Your wine binary was not upgraded correctly,
or you have an older one somewhere in your PATH.
Or maybe the wrong wineserver is still running?

How can I solve this bad error? I think it should happened first from Ubuntu update.

My OS is Ubuntu 10.04 lucid 32-bit.
CPU dual core.
3 GB RAM
ATI Radeon Graphic Card.

Patching
by Benjamin Lawrence on Friday October 22nd 2010, 23:12
So I had no problems with getting Spore to work. The Creepy & Cute Parts collection even updated 1.0 to 1.02 for me. Then, nada.

Can't go any further, it keeps just crashing right off from the bat when trying to patch up higher.

$ wine spore_dd_patch_all_v5_1.exe

Graphics problem in menus
by JJB3 on Monday February 22nd 2010, 12:12
I installed Spore on my wine. After applying the "-safe" and "OffscreenRenderingMode" to "fbo" the game starts. The menus look perfect until you open and close them a few times (2-5x).
Did not play the real game yet, because I cannot find the correct buttons.

Screen shots can be found at;
picasaweb.google.nl/jjb3nl/SporeBug#

System spec;
Wine version 1.1.26 and 1.1.39 (tried both)
Ubuntu x64 9.04 Karmic (2.6.31-20-generic)
Processor Intel Core2 Quad Q9550
ATI Radeon HD4870X2

Problem also seems to appear in The Sims 3 (and expansions).

Does anyone know a solution to this?
Thanks Dennis

No sufficiant system
by Jan-Hendrik Palic on Saturday December 19th 2009, 5:19
Hi there,

I installed Spore on Debian GNULinux (lenny) with 2.6.31 and recent
nvidia driver from Backports.org/unstable.

I installed the nocd crack as well.

starting Spore with -save flag gives me a windows, which says, that
the system requirement are not fit.

The system is running KDE 3.x with compiz from lenny and is an
AMD Sempron 2600+ with 1GB RAM and a NVidia 7600GT (largest graphic
board for AGP) and the wine version is 1.1.34.

I looked for some solution in the internet but I found only the system
requirement from EA, which says, that the computer is sufficiant to
play.

Any hints where I have to look at or any solutions for that problem?

Many thanks in advance. ;-)

Byebye
