Additional Comments
First I had graphic issues, which the d3dx9_36.dll quickly fix.
also had a C++ runtime error. Downloaded the vcrun2005 via winetricks.
also used winetricks to set the following:
DirectDrawRendering=opengl
OffscreenRenderingMode=fbo
VideoMemorySize==256
Multiple Microsoft development tools online/web installers fail to skip "$shtdwn$.req" with FILE_ATTRIBUTE_HIDDEN (Visual Studio Express Editions, .NET Framework 3.0)
The witcher EE actually works fine, there seem to be some problems with upgrading from regular edition, I advise seeking help on official Witchers forums and support.
www.thewitcher.com
HOWTO
This howto was tested on wine 1.1.5 version on PC with GF800GTS card.
Using this registery keys for Direct3D gives 100% performance boost to
the game:
Direct Draw Renderer: opengl
OffscreenRenderingMode: fbo
RenderTargetLockMode: textex
Also there was need to put d3dx9_36.dll to the game dir , else it would
crash
IMPORTANT- There is a strange bug , when skipping intro, when the wolf
medalion appears DO NOT press ESC to skip it, the game hangs for me,
after you wait few secons the main menu appears and you can play the
game
PS.
Do not try to install any DirectX stuff or ither unecessary libraries this will mess your wine prefix up.
Please read the comments how to emulate .NET if you dont own the EE edition and you just want to upgrade regular witcher.

Two Error Messages
by Dena on Saturday June 2nd 2012, 21:52
Hello!
I'm sorry, I'm very new to Ubuntu and Wine. I have Ubuntu 12.04 and Wine 1.4 running.
I have the Witcher Enhanced edition disks and I installed the game no problem but when I go to play it I get two error messages. One saying I don't have the privileges to run the game (need to be an Admin which I am) and "Invalid perimeters received".
I'm really at a loss as to what to do so any help that you provide will be greatly appreciated!
Screen goes black on certain effects
by doctordruidphd on Thursday July 2nd 2009, 9:12
I have the game running, but it has a problem with certain screens. When Geralt gets drunk, when his vitality drops, when he drinks a Blizzard potion, or sits down to meditate, the screen goes black. All I can see are the floating messages. This appears to be related to the blurring or greying effects.
Is there a workaround for this, or some way of disabling these effects in the game? Makes it difficult to win some battles without the Blizzard.
Another problem is that the colored rings under the characters that indicate friend/foe and vitality are completely missing.
This is kUbuntu-9.04 64-bit, with compositing turned off. Same problems with gnome and xfce desktops. I have tried the current version of wine, both with a full directx install via winetricks, and with only the changes mentioned at the beginning of this forum.
Thanks for any help.

Cannot install kubuntu jaunty or karmic
by doctordruidphd on Friday June 12th 2009, 19:49
I just received the Witcher Enhanced Edition DVD, and I am unable to install it on either karmic or jaunty. The language selection box opens, I choose English, then the InstallShield wizard opens, there is a message, "The Witcher Setup is preparing the InstallShield Wizard, which will guide you through the rest of the setup process. Please Wait." The bar advances almost to the end, and then it freezes. That's as far as it goes; a few minutes later, I get a message box that says,
"Error number: 0x80040708 Description: (0x80004005) Setup will now terminate." gdiplus.dll is present on the system.
Any ideas how to proceed?
Good News.
by Casey Jones on Tuesday June 2nd 2009, 14:50
The Wither 1.5 is coming soon, and it's going to remove the copy protection and the DVD check. So you shouldn't have to use a crack to play this game anymore.

Upgrade from 1.0 to 1.4 enhanced
by P Macko on Monday May 18th 2009, 22:44
Do not use Mono 2.2 when upgrading the game to 1.4. It's broken. I couldn't get the upgrade to work with it. I used Mono 2.0.1 (via winetricks) to get the .NET 3.0 functionality needed to upgrade the game instead and the upgrade completed successfully without having to use a crack.
Atari Popup Window
by Michael J. Tinsley on Thursday March 5th 2009, 10:00
I just installed TWEE from DVD, and during my first attempt to run the game, I got the fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.VC80.CRT" error. I fixed that by installing vcredist_x86.exe, which appears to have worked (I no longer get the preceeding error), *but* when I run the game now, I get an Atari popup window with the following message: Insufficient privileges: you must be the administrator when you run this application for the first time. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this, or a good workaround? Thanks in advance.
Game works fine.
But is it posible to run djinni (witcher's editor), someone do that?
I crashes, when its initializing. The window with process bar appears, then i get a comment" wineserver crashed"
Health / Toxity bars
by Elly M on Thursday January 1st 2009, 8:02
I installed v1.0 then upgraded to 1.4 (had to do with the no-cd way, because it tried to check the registration during the upgrade but failed to establish an i-net connection.. thus no checking and thus no installation. yay)
Anyhow, the game runs but I'm missing the health / toxitiy bars. Is there anything that can be done to fix that?
Anyone get this to work on Ubuntu 8.10?
by Maven on Tuesday December 30th 2008, 0:23
So far, I've only seen people post saying they got it to work on 8.4. I have 8.10 and I just bought the EE of The Witcher. Tried to install it on Windows but the install took FOREVER. Installed it in Ubuntu but it just won't run. The Witcher game launcher appears on my bottom panel, but nothing happens. I'm running WINE 1.1.11, any clues?
Upgrading 1.0 DVD to TWEE
by Simetrical on Monday December 22nd 2008, 10:06
I'm writing this guide because there's conflicting information given in the comments here, no HOW-TO, and what correct information there is is often vague on details. This is what worked for me:
1) Start downloading the four files TWEE_Upgrade.exe, TWEE_English_language_pack.exe (or other appropriate language pack), TWEE_adventure_Side_Effects.exe, and TWEE_adventure_The_Price_of_Neutrality.exe. These are big and will take a while to get.
2) Install The Witcher (preferably in a new Wine prefix, by prefixing all your commands in a terminal with "WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-witcher" or something). Do NOT install any kind of No-CD crack, as some other comments recommend: it's not needed and broke the game for me.
3) Find the files d3dx9_36.dll (needed for the game to run) and gdiplus.dll (needed for the launcher to run) online and drop them in C:\windows\system32.
4) Register an account at .
5) Run C:\Program Files\The Witcher\launcher.exe and select "Register Game". Enter in your username/password from (4). You'll need your CD key at some point here too, so have your manual handy.
6) Put all four of the files from (1) in the same directory (for instance, C:\) and run TWEE_Upgrade.exe. This will take a long time, and you might have to enter in your username and password from (4).
This got the game working for me. You'll also want to perform the registry tweaks given in the HOW-TO so that the game runs at a decent rate.
Witcher crashes when skipping the intro with wine-1.1.8
by Florian on Saturday November 8th 2008, 5:56
Hi,
I updated wine to Version 1.1.8 When I press escape to quit the intro witcher crashes. It worked with wine-1.1.7 before.
Can somebody confirm that? (I don't mean the issue with that's described in the how-to box)

[Howto] Update Standard Witcher to 1.4
by GNU_Raziel on Tuesday October 21st 2008, 15:30
1-Make a fresh install of your ORIGINAL game The Witcher with wine.
2-Download all needed files from The Witcher Website, this mean :
"TWEE_Upgrade.exe" (a ~900mb patch file)
"TWEE_YOUR-LANGUAGE_language_pack.exe"
"TWEE_adventure_Side_Effects.exe" (optional bonus quest)
"TWEE_adventure_The_Price_of_Neutrality.exe" (optional bonus quest)
3-Find yourself 1045_witcher.v1.4.5.1282.nodvd.rar and replace the exe of the game with the one in this archive.
4-Now double click on "TWEE_Upgrade.exe" and install the update. You'll notice that it bypassed the registration message.
5-Replace the game exe with a working NO-DVD to bypass the protection requirement (remenber it curently DO NOT WORK with wine, see bug report on the game page)
6-Enjoy the Enhanced Edition of the witcher.
Let's hope Wine dev will soon find a way to make the game protection working so there wil be no need of those crap No-DVD files anymore...
Additional Adventures?
by Florian on Friday October 17th 2008, 4:12
Hi there,
Is anyone able to play the additional adventures like "The price of neutrality"? I cannot install it because the installer claims that witcher is not installed properly. I was suprised because I changed nothing since I installed the EE patch.
I was never given the option to isntall directx 9. I just install and closed. I did add the d3dx9_36.dll to my wine installation. And I also compiled wine just for this game alone.
I installed The Witcher EE and patch to 1.4 and then ran witcher.exe but I was missing some dlls. So, I download Microsoft.VC80.CRT.zip and extracted it to the The Witcher EE/System. I ran witcher.exe again and it said it was having issues with MSVCR80.dll. So I got a new MSVCR80.dll from dll-download.com or something like that. But now I am getting the following error within the terminal:

Gold my foot.
by Mike Masterson on Sunday September 28th 2008, 3:58
I went about installing wine with the patch applied at bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15374 to the wininet.dll to allow for registration. I also used winetricks to install the appropriate Visual C++ Runtimes and located a copy of Microsoft.VC80.CRT.zip to place in my Witcher/system directory.
Neither the launcher or game run. When running the launcher, the tray appears (but no program, and in the terminal I get:

Install patch version of EE
by Florian on Thursday September 25th 2008, 12:12
So here is how to install the upgrade version of the EE if you already bought the game.
You need a patched wine with the patch from here: bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15374 to be able to register the game.
Then you install The Witcher and register it. Now you need to save the TWEE_Upgrade.exe and the right language pack for you in the same folder and run the TWEE_Upgrade.exe and wait and wait and wait. Then it's done :)
Missing stuff?

I have installed the game according to the Howto and added registry keys + d3dx9 where it was necessary. Now, according to my console register, there seems to be missing more stuff. Did you applied any other patches on the game to make it work?

Instalation bug
by Zopper on Thursday September 25th 2008, 0:56
If you are installing this game from DVDs, you must insert DVD in the same mechanic else instalator don't find install files. This is game bug, not wine - on windows XP game do this too.
