The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
What works
- Installing
- Starting up
- Getting past initial videos (crashed previously)
- Sound
- Video
- Saving/loading
What does not
Nothing that I've been able to find.
What was not tested
I haven't played very much, but in previous versions the game crashed with boatloads of error messages before actually getting to the game. Now it gets to the game with only minor errors about not being able to change the screen depth. So far, so good.
Additional Comments
Could probably use some more testing, but whatever had broken this game seems to be fixed now.
I have found that the 32 bit Myst (installed under Win98) works quite
well with Wine, of CVS circa 20010526. I use the following entry in the
wine config file:
[AppDefaults\\\myst.exe\\\x11drv]
"Managed" = "N"
"Desktop" = "640x480"
The clever trick of creating an image of the Myst CD and then
mounting it to the CDROM mount point also works well. It also runs fine
directly off the CD.
# mount /images/myst.img -r -t iso9660 -o loop /mnt/cdrom
Myst is broken under the infamous June 2001 Wine patches, but with Wine before that, I have found only a few anomalies.
- The elevator rotation control in the mechanical age frequently causes Myst to lock up. So save your game before operating it.
- Driving around the "submarine" occasionally locks it up. Again, save your game.
- When I release the mouse button when operating the up and down
arrows on the planetarium controls (scroll bars), the scroll bars
continue moving for awhile longer, depending on how long I had the
mouse pressed. Only hold the mouse button for a second or so at a time
on these controls.
- Transitions mode causes interesting color maps.
HOWTO
I was able to play Myst fairly well using the git revision from 20070624.
In order to install Myst, you will need to run winecfg and set the Operating System to Windows 95. You can do this either globally or per-exe (which is what I'd recommend) by clicking "Add Application." You'll want to make sure that the installer.exe on the Myst CD is set to Windows 95.
Run the installer with WINE and install Myst and quicktime. Both of these installers ran perfectly for me.
If you are doing a per-exe Windows 95 configuration, then you'll have to set myst.exe to use Windows 95 in winecfg. Otherwise, myst.exe may crash saying, "Myst was designed for Windows 95. You are running Windows NT." depending on what you have for your global settings.
Now, you can run myst.exe :)
Known Issues (I will update this as I find more, if you see something, please post a comment):
"Transitions" cause odd color maps, rolling over the menu will fix them though
The cursor will sometimes not be transparent

RE: Can't get past first cutscene

I've had a little more success under Wine 1.1.4.
In winecfg I set sound to OSS and deselected Alsa.
I also set Myst to play in a virtual desktop.
And now I can actually start playing the game. So far, so good.
