Old test results
The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
What works
The entire game that I have played so far.
The 3D match works but seems slow compared to 2D.
What does not
Installation (of DVD version - not Steam).
What was not tested
Installation and multiplayer.
Copy protection (executable replaced by one with protection removed).
Additional Comments
You need to try and install dotnetfx; it will crash but it does something crucial (get a load of Visual basic runtime problems otherwise), then youll need a copy of d3dx9_36 and _37 in your windows/system32 folder. I wouldn't worry about trying to override it in winecfg, you can but I didn't.
Installation:
Use Steam (see instructions for installing Steam on wine) - you can insert your CD key from retail versions to download and install via Steam.
You must have directx9, dotnet20 and msxml3 installed to run FM2009, these can all be installed with winetricks.
Activation:
Download the fixed activator (http://www.footballmanager.com/fixv2.zip), run the program to extract activator.exe over the one at (default) ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/Steam/steamapps/common/"football manager 2009"/activator.exe.
Run the new activator from the command line as follows:
wine ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/Steam/steamapps/common/"football manager 2009"/activator.exe -activate ufhw8eff89ff0nwf08ww
Where ufhw8eff89ff0nwf08ww is the key printed on your manual (if you bought the game through Steam, right click it in My Games and click 'Show CD key' - do NOT paste directly from here, it will not work in uppercase)
Make sure your CD key is all lowercase, and watch out for 1's that look like l's, or o's that look like 0's (use http://keycheck.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com/ to check your key).
You should now be able to launch the game via Steam. I'll be testing Network mode later and will report back with my findings.
If for some reason it doesn't work, please check ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/"All Users"/"Application Data"/"Sports Interactive"/"Football Manager 2009 Certificate"/HttpCheck.log and make sure that the end reads something like:
SI Activator: Activation succeeded
Activation reads success.

by Morten Rostved on Sunday May 17th 2009, 7:21
First thanks for your guide.
I have a legal copy of the game, and wants to run it in Ubuntu 9.04 with Wine 1.1.21.
I have followed your guide, but when I try to start the game I'm getting a window: (I translating from Danish)
----
Online Activation:
Welcome to Sports Interactive Football Manager 2009 Certifecate
Product key:
[boxs - where I' able to enter the keycode]
Controlnumber:
[single box - where there's no access to enter anything]
----
There are no buttons or anything I can press and go on..
I have done the hole activation process in your guide, without any trouble at all..

I feel so, so close
by Pete Allinson on Monday March 23rd 2009, 11:11
Afternoon all - newcomer to Ubuntu and Linux here.
I've completed all the steps (I think) and I feel I'm falling at the last hurdle.
When I paste-
"wine ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/Steam/steamapps/common/"football manager 2009"/activator.exe -activate 00000mykey000000" into the terminal - I get a long message, the last few lines are:
SI Activator: Got -activate with: MY KEY
SI Activator: Activating license: MY KEY
Activation request: sMY KEY&f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
Platinum?
by Gavin on Monday November 24th 2008, 6:55
Glad as I am that the game is working, it should not be rated as Platinum; Platinum is reserved for applications which work with no effort or work arounds on a default install of Wine. The tests which have rated platinum even admit to requiring these work arounds.
Threading
by Maquis196 on Sunday November 23rd 2008, 12:26
Afternoon fellow fm'ers. Can anyone tell me if threading makes a noticeable difference to the game? We all know it's just a massive number cruncher, but I'm still using a single core and tempted to get a quad core early...
ESP if someone can tell me flat out that have 2 or 4 cores makes a huge difference.

window mode
by fogtrin on Wednesday November 19th 2008, 17:13
I have problem with window mode. When I change display from full screen to window mode game loading a few minutes, then report problem with FaceGen. Anyway, when I try to change window mode to full screen game window disappear. Any suggestions?
Run the enclosed file "Activator.exe" with "-activate " as an argument, eg
"wine Activator.exe -activate abc123fgh19371974"
NB: your cd key must be in all lower case. Watch out for 1s that look like ls and Os that look like 0s.
Check in C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009 Certificate\HttpCheck.log to see if you've been activated. You have? Hurray! Unfortunately, FM now simply crashes rather than asking for activation.
