Additional Comments

It installs nearly like an angel. Then when I want to start it is dies.
Fixed several problems by installing some prefixes from winetrincks:
* msxml3
* vcrun2005
* wmp10

also used the the xlive.dll as metioned.

HOWTO remove GFWL from GTAIV

Games for Windows - LIVE does not work under Wine. GFWL components will crash any game that use the service. The only thing to do about it is to cut XLive out using XLiveLess Patch.

INSTRUCTIONS

1) Download the latest XLiveLess patch from here.

2) Unpack xlive.dll into the game folder.

XLive is out and the game launch is unobstructed. Please note that from now on the online play via GFWL is disabled so as to prevent cheating.

I asked the user twice but there is no response until now.

It's sad to read from you the game won't actually play.

Please don't give up testing, i cannot try it at this time, maybe I can give my first try after the stable release of Karmic.

Does anyone know how Vityok Wohoo has gotten this game to work? I tried every wine version but the game just crashes on startup.

You don't install service packs under WINE.
At some point there needs to be a function of WINE that pretends service packs are installed or better yet have game designers with brains.

With patch 1.0.1.0 i get new error message: GTA IV FATAL ERROR: XNetStartup failed - Please re-boot your system and/or re-install the game.

I think it is the same error like WS10, but translated :)

So still not working :(

hi, I am on my 2nd attempt at getting this to run!

It installed easily enough, but running it has had long lists of errors!! I have worked through all of them now, and when i run it, i just get the following;

I have put the xlive.dll into every folder i can think of, as well as trying to hide it in some of the manifests, but no luck! I have just started the whole process again with a fresh install of wine, a clean ~/.wine directory, and just re-installing gta iv as i write this!

I will post back if i get any further!

I get RMN40 on XP and RMN20 on Vista on wine, when I change windows version in winecfg to 2000, it started but crashed on advapi32 library, more on pastebin.com/f22a34beb - Before I get all time R6034 error caused by missing manifest files in windows/Winsxs - For fix you must copy ATL and CRT manifest directories from original windows to your wine winsxs, until warning "fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly ..." go out. I think, it is caused by unsupported Xlive.

I succefully installed GTA IV but I get classical Runtime Error! R6034 and console output:

I build newest wine from source with this patch: www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/attachments/20081205/d872e427/attachment.bin
so I didn't get advapi32.dll error
I got also the WS10 error, but I installed XLiveRedist01.02.0241.00.msi from Microsoft's site and now it doesn't come anymore. But now running the game causes C Run-Time Error R6034.
This is what appears to terminal:

I did not install it, i just ran it from my hard disk. It was installed in Windows XP.

I used the Fed0r crack to get past Securom. After that I got errors about missing dll's: xlive and WMV* and other Windows Media dll's like wmasf. Also others like msasn1 and vcrun2008. I copied them over. It got vcrun2008 with winetricks. Finally it ran but crashed with error:

wine: Call from 0x7b8456b0 to unimplemented function advapi32.dll.UpdateTraceA, aborting

When running with native advapi32 (although winecfg says it is not recommended) it came up with a GTA IV dialog saying "Fatal error WS10".

There are some serious issues:

1. The game needs latest Service Pack 3 in Windows XP (wine has only SP 2), you should set emulation to Windows 2000, it should work (I have patch for wine to pretend Windows XP with SP 3)
2. It needs latest xlive from DVD, I am not able to get pass this error: WS10, it is related to xlive.

So current status: not working
