By default, SimCity 4 only allows you to use resolutions up to 1280x1024, but it's very easy to use any resolution you want, just add this to your launcher/start script:
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32
Replace 1920x1080 with your desired resolution.

-d:software
by chris lee on Wednesday January 14th 2009, 1:54
Hello,
Mine looks to be working well with Slackware 12.1, intel 855GM video with intel driver, alsa audio. It won't work without the -d:software option though and I'd like to know what that is. I assume it means the display is done via software but is that a wine option? Where is it documented?
Does not install.
by Daniel Valentine on Sunday July 29th 2007, 20:05
I run an Athlon 64 X2 3600+ 1GB RAM OpenSUSE 10.2 box. Installation goes fine... until the second disk, in wish the installer proceeds to install some data yet stays at 0.00% and crashes to Linux desktop.
Works with issues (Ubuntu Fiesty, Wine 9.41)
by andrew on Saturday July 14th 2007, 10:40
On my Desktop (s939 Athlon 3200+ with 1GB ram, and an GeForce 6600GT video card) system with a fresh Wine install this game will work only with ALSA sound drivers, and causes wine to report lot's of buffer over/under runs (will not work at all using OSS). It Semi-works in OpenGL mode - minor texture drops occur (ie: the Spaceship monster you can see the shadow and everything it's doing, but you can't see the actual ship), but no other glitches to report in term of video problems in OpenGL mode. However, if the game is using OpenGL, the over/under runs with the sound system cause the game to suddenly freeze. In software rendering mode, I have lot's of issues with the screen flashing (sticky flashing dialog boxes, flashing mouse cursor trails, and really annoying white flashing line along the bottom of the screen) - not very nice when trying to play the game. But the flip side, the game does not crash though the buffer over/under runs continue to occur. I can't rate this bronze, but it is better then garbage.
Link for adding test data is not working
by Steven V. Wilson on Wednesday April 18th 2007, 2:19
I just tested this on Ultima Linux version 8.0.1. I can not add the test data as the button dosn't work I get a blank screen that says its not avalible. Maybe winehq.cog wine version is doing server maintanace or something anyway I am using wine version CVS, installed 2 days ago.
The game will not complete the install ends on disk 2. I was away from the computer so I did not see when but here is the output from Konsle:

Unable to finish install or run SC4 therafter
by SD-User on Saturday October 7th 2006, 13:43
I am running an AMD64, 1GB memory, Nvidia PCI video card. I have wine 9.22 installed. Fedora Core 5. The below is a transcript of what happens when I run "wine SimCity\ 4.exe" and "WINEDEBUG=fixme-all wine SimCity\ 4.exe -d:software". Maybe a memory error? I have no idea - any help would be greatly appreciated ( live01@hotmail.com).
Also had no success after installing Patch 2 from the simcity.com website.

Problem starting it
by RaduB. on Monday May 29th 2006, 9:16
I installed the game manually and when i try starting it it gives " Unable to find game data. This is likely an installation problem or operating system problem".
I think this is because i didn't put any registry entries. ( i don't know where to get them from the cd ). I looked on an installation on dc++ so i'm sure i have all the files in.
Can someone give me the registry entries for this game?
It does work; here's how
by Jeremy on Monday December 26th 2005, 23:29
I got it working under SuSE 9.3 and Wine 0.9.3. I also got it working under SuSE 10.0 and Wine 20050725. I installed Simcity 4 (Deluxe) on a Windows XP machine and I also applied the patch (available from simcity.ea.com). I then moved the Program Files/Maxis directory over to my Linux box. I replaced the main executable with this one: simpage.net/files/SimCity 4.exe (that fixes the "debugger" error).
I started it up with: wine SimCity\ 4.exe -d:software
I think the first time I tried it, it died, but it did work the second time. So, if it doesn't work immediately for you, just try running it again.
There is only one outstanding bug that I'm aware of: The "Sims control" window is open when the game launches and I can't get it to close. Since my city doesn't have any sims, if I try to remove the sim using the window, the game crashes. This window ends up covering a small portion of the GUI. Other than that, this looks perfect. The performance is on par with the Windows install, the graphics are great (at 1280x1024 no less), and the sound and mouse are working perfectly.
