What works

Out of the box, everything works EXCEPT the keychange dialog. Fixing that requires using native comctl32.dll.

What does not

Program requires its custom font in "windows/fonts" and it needs to be the revised version mentioned in the notes on Appdb page. Also the comctl32.dll needs to be native for proper functioning of the keychange dialog.

What was not tested
Nothing

HOWTO- font issues

Somewhere after ver 9.6 tef260.ttf failed to display for me. The workaround for me is to remove tef260.ttf from the Tabledit program directory, and from windows/fonts and /usr/local/share/wine/fonts and /usr/local/share/fonts. Instead make sure to put tef260.ttf and other win ttf files into a X11 font directory, like /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/TTF and run mkfontscale and mkfontdir in that directory. After next rebuild of the x font-cache (reboot, or do by command line) and restart of tabledit, wine will build a cachedmetrics file in the .wine directory and TablEdit will now find and display the tef260 font properly.

All of the above is no longer relevant, see Greg Hill's note about the revised tef260.ttf font below

docking palettes

In winecfg under graphics tab, uncheck the option to allow the window manager to control the windows. This solved a problem where the palettes were unable to be docked into the toolbar areas.

This problem has resolved itself in WINE versions  of vintage 0.9.5x or greater.

Note

To enable proper operation of the spinbox accessed under "Score -> Key Signature" I have to use a native dll.

I have (as of ver 0.9.27) moved to XP dlls for this override. comctl32.dll run as native. But in more recent versions (like 0.9.5x) with the "windows/winsxs" directory I must rename this directory, to eliminate it, so the native dlls will load

Without the override the spinbox when activated rolls to all sharps.

No longer an issue with Wine 1.1.2, no dll over-ride required.

Printing now works

With the advent of Greg Hill's fontforged tef260.ttf font printing is now correct under WINE.

I had success by putting tef260.ttf along with other core truetype fonts into windows/fonts and printing thru CUPS.

Printing works with version 9.24 when run in winecfg as Win98.

With version 0.9.27 I have to run as W2000 or XP to get printing to work, W98 no longer works for printing.

Key Signature Spinbox issue
by E Peltzer on Monday February 25th 2008, 12:43
The note above regarding overrides to use the native cmctl32.dll has become a little more critical for me.

I generally compile wine with every two-week update, and I usually have to run wineprefixcreate in order for the upgrade to register fully and be able to re-use the existing /.wine directory. This process seems to re-create the winsxs directory. Lately, Tabledit fails to even start because, as noted, this disables the override.

EVERY time Wine is upgraded, it seems, the C:\windows\winsxs directory may have to be renamed to be taken out of the loop so that the override will work.

Ubuntu Edgy, Wine 0.9.22 works very well.
by E Peltzer on Friday February 16th 2007, 14:41
Greg Hill was kind enough to send me his modded tef260.ttf font, thanks. I'm using the Wine v. packaged for Edgy, which is a few versions shy of current. I was able to install and get it working setting winecfg to WinXP, and in the graphics section, uncheck "Allow window manager to control . . ." and check "Emulate a virtual desktop" at (for me) a size of 1280x1000, which is just below my screen resolution of 1280x1024. (This is also a good setting to enable Photoshop 7.0 to run extremely well.)

Initial issues were ghost palettes and not being able to dock the pallets. Once I did the virtual desktop these problems seem to have gone. Also getting MIDI to work was some trial and error. I ended up pretty much following the instructions for getting TiMidity going. Instead of running $ timidity -iA every time before starting Tabledit, you can have timidity start at boot by $ sudo gedit /etc/default/timidity and then un-comment out the line TIM_ALSAEQ=true . MIDI playback and export works well. Another hint - a good standalone player for MIDI files exported from Tabledit is the built-in Gnome GUI player with timidity, $ timidity -ig . Bare bones but at least you can save and load playlists and ff, rew, skip, etc. I did not bother going out and finding other MIDI sound fonts because the existing guitar sounds are quite excellent - much better than XP, actually, these MIDI's are pretty listenable and much less computer-mechanical robot sounding.

Then print preview seemed at first not to work at all, which is not good because you really have to work with print preview to get the spacing and formatting of pages to look decent. I realized that there is no default printer selected. You have to basically choose a printer by going to File | Options | Printing tab | Printer Setup... and select the printer and page size. Once this is done, you can then print preview with full functionality. I seem to have to do this everytime the program is started up.

I imported a number of truetype fonts that I was using in Tabledit in XP and they all seem to produce a printed page fairly close to output in XP, with some minor problems. The treble clef is not complete, and neither are the curvy note flags on single 1/8th notes, nor coda symbols. Perhaps the tef260 font is not quite right, though the on-screen display and print preview look fine. I usually print and save music to PDF, and I managed to get cups-pdf installed on the system to enable this and it works great, though the font problem is in the PDFs also. Anyone have font problems like this?

The last issue is the key signature roll-box issue mentioned by others, which I also have not been able to work around. (Try to change it and it goes to all sharps.) I may wait until a later v. of Wine is packaged for Ubuntu to see if that works itself out. It seems I can always import the substitute Windows dlls as has been noted if I really need to.

In the meantime, this and Photoshop 7.0 are the first apps I have had success with in Wine and I am fairly impressed with the 98%-plus functionality and solidity. A couple more apps and it's Linux all the way for me. Thanks Wine people and to all who've posted their setup notes, keep up the good work.

- Eric

Generating new tef260.ttf font
by Greg T Hill on Tuesday October 10th 2006, 23:55
My previous post was misleading, I did not "Save as" in Fontforge.
To generate a tef260 font that will work properly, open the font in Fontforge, choose "Generate Fonts" from the file menu. The name appears as "Tef250.ttf" Change this to "tef260.ttf". Below the name of the font is a drop down box of font types. Choose "True Type (Symbol)" and click "Save". A warning box will appear complaining about the Em Size and asking if you want to save it anyway, Choose "Yes". Copy font to .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts and your X11 truetype directory and run as root "fc-cache -v -f", restart Xserver, and enjoy.

Fixed tef260.ttf Font display
by Greg T Hill on Sunday October 8th 2006, 19:32
The problem with the tef260.ttf font seems to be partly with the font itself. I've been try different binary versions of wine and compiling different versions from source, and none I could install worked. I had to install FontForge to compile the wine fonts, and decided, under the influence of too much Cafe Cubano, to play with the font in FontForge. I had seen references to problems with symbol fonts, and I didn't see anyindication that it was recognized as such. I merely saved the font as a TrueType Symbol font, and to my complete surprise, it works perfectly. Before, if I put the font by itself in the windows/font folder, all the menu items were in unintelligible music symbols, but the special characters in the tab and notation did not display. Now, all is correct: Clefs, time and key signatures, codas, rests. etc.

I have tested this on Kubuntu 6.06 with the shipped Wine-09.9 and 0.9.12 from Sourceforge, on SuSE 9.3 and 10.1, Win98 (for grins), and a compiled from source Wine-0.9.22 on Kubuntu. Too much caffeine.

Side notes: Midi playback works with timidity -iA -Os -B2,8 started before launching TablEdit. Select "TiMidity port 0 " from Midi Setup and "it just works".

With the later versions of wine, no native dll's are needed, no problems with spin boxes or anything else that I've found.

Only remaining issues are goofy palettes if the window manager controls the window. I deselect that and choose a virtual desktop, in my case 1200 x 1000 for a fullscreen window.

Anyone wishing a copy of the modified font can email me at crunchie812 at bellsouth dot net.
