Instruments, playback, installation

What does not
midi keyboard did not get detected, could not connect wine to jack

What was not tested
exporting/rendering audio

Additional Comments

I am going to test out my soundcard, which appears to be supported by ALSA, native instruments Audio Kontrol 1, which would mean I could hook up external synths and mics to Ableton. In terms of midi I usually program my midi plugins. Also going to test VSTs with Ableton in wine.

HOWTO

Audio / Video File Support

For Codec support install QuickTime with winetricks. Tested with .mp3 audio and .mp4 video files.
I get missing gstreamer 32bit lib errors when I don't do this. So I suppose gstreamer could be an native alternative.

$ winetricks quicktime72

Set your Windows version to Vista or 7 in winetricks to get rid of the black screen bug from QuickTime.

Black Screen on Startup

If you have the screen cleared black on startup when you use QuickTime for codecs, you have encountered Bug 1347.

Set Wine to Windows 7 mode in winecfg to fix this.

Bad Audio Quality

If you have bad audio quality, try a sample rate of 48000 in the audio settings.

If this does not help and you use pulseaudio (default on Ubuntu), kill it. Kill it with fire. (sudo killall pulseaudio).
Make sure the audio test in winecfg sounds good and is played back completely.

Exporting / Rendering Audio

Currently you need to build wine yourself and apply this patch, as stated in Bug 15695.
Roughly:

$ git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git && cd wine
$ patch -p1 < abletonexport.diff
$ ./configure && make -j3

Authorization File

Pass the path to the auz file as first parameter to Live.exe with an absolute Windows path. You only need to do this once.

$ wine Live.exe "C:\foo.auz"

Ableton crashes on run
by Dustin B on Thursday September 6th 2012, 22:24
Running Linux Mint 64bit. Attempted to install Ableton in both Wine 32bit and 64bit versions of wine, after running "winetricks quicktime72 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 corefonts", and continue to get this error.

wine: Call from 0x7b83a2e2 to unimplemented function msvcr90.dll._vsprintf_l, aborting
wine: Unimplemented function msvcr90.dll._vsprintf_l called at address 0x7b83a2e2 (thread 0037), starting debugger...

That's in both 32bit and 64 bit systems. Has anyone come across this before?

Does Ableton crash for anyone else when they try to save?

Does not work at all now?
by mo on Sunday December 4th 2011, 17:46
I've tried Ableton Live 7.0.3, 8.0.1, 8.2.2 with Ubuntu 11.04 and Wine 1.3.33. None of them start, all give the message "encountered a serious error and has to shut down". I've fully disabled pulseaudio, I'm not sure why ALL versions are not working when I was using 7.03 and Ubuntu 8.10 perfectly once.

Should I try stable WINE?

Edit:
I was able to open track from the program's library. Yet Ctrl + O ends in an error.

I followed the tutorial, everything got done, but i can't import .wav, .mp3, .mp4 etc files. It gives me error:

"An error occurred while reading "file location"
Apparently, the document was created by a more recent, and incompatible, version of Live than this.

[Unknown Compound Stream Type]"

I lowered the min cache size, didn't work either. Any guesses?
