What works
It works fine, technically. Sound, tooltips etc all work fine.

What does not
It is slow, and the slowness is bad enough to make it unplayable.

What was not tested
I could not go through all functionality because it's not playable.

Additional Comments

I have to downgrade this from gold to silver.

There is a performance problem when playing this through wine that make it unplayable. I do not agree that it is a redraw problem. The performance problems start right when you want to start a scenario which doesn't draw anything. Another thing that is very slow is resupply calculation.

Possibly this is related to use of C# code in newer versions of TOAW. I wish I could tell which TOAW3 patch I'm using but it's sitting there stupid trying to load the Chinese Farm scenario spinning the wheel. Ah there it is 3.4.0.202.

1.36 Test
by Zachary Hutchinson on Monday January 11th 2010, 22:57
I upgraded wine to 1.36 and ran another quick test with TOAW without reinstalling the game. All text displayed as various-sized blocks and the map features were, for lack of a better word, screwed. The game would start and I could start a scenario, but nothing looked right.

I found this registry addition here which seems to have fixed it: wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-dec980f6deabdb11b789c981bf49e10e70929eaf

I'll repeat it here for good measure:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"ClientSideWithRender"="N"

Add the two above lines to a text file, name it norender.txt, and using the terminal type: regedit norender.txt

This fixed the display problem completely.

So far the game plays the same under 1.36. There is a lag between the time a new scenario is selected before the pre-turn 1 supply calculations appear. I'm not sure if this was there before. However, and I might be wrong on this, but I've loaded three different scenarios and once the supply progress bars appear, they move really quick. I mean, possibly even quicker than I recall them running under windows.
