HOWTO
The game does not run correctly in Wine 0.9.37. Earlier and newer versions work fine

This game requires a crack to work; several are available from MegaGames (the 2.2 UK crack works fine for the 3.0 UK version).

Installing the patches is highly recommended, as they provide fixes for serious bugs in the game (not Wine related).

There are different patches for the different versions of the game

UK - various

Multiplayer
To get multiplayer working, place dpnsvr.exe and the DLLs in this archive in Wine's windows/system32 directory. Then, start winecfg and add dll overrides (native, builtin) for the following DLLs: dplayx, dpnet, dpnhpast and dpwsockx. Finally, update your registry by running 'wineprefixcreate'.

To Solve Multiplayer possible crashes where connection drops
by heroes_fan on Tuesday July 12th 2011, 9:45
Not sure if this helps anyone with the frequent connection drops when playing a multiplayer game, But seemed to solved my problem.

Game would play for around 3 to 5 turns then crash out do to a connection being dropped.

my work around.

Seems to work when you run regsvr32 dpnet.dll before starting the heroes 4 game in wine.

This is tested with Heroes of might and magic 4 plain version 2,2. Also using the instructions above to get Multiplayer to work.

Hope this helps.

Ok, on jaunty 9.04 and 1.01 of wine

First, the game run perfectly (it run well for me) if you set a virtual desktop and use fullscreen. I didn't need rechange it to windowed, it start again well too.

Performance
by GreatEmerald on Wednesday January 14th 2009, 9:48
A workaround for poor performance and a way to get better graphics:
1. If your screen is big enough, set a virtual desktop size in winecfg to 1600x1280. If not (or if you want a custom number), any size bigger or equal to 1280x1024 (it has to have a ratio of 1:1.25 or similar) will do.
2. Launch Heroes of Might and Magic IV, go to Game Settings and set these parameters:
Screen Resolution: 1280x1024
Full Screen: V
3. Here you go, it gives you additional information and makes numbers and characters bigger while maintaining good performance.
4. Once you're done, uncheck Full Screen and exit the application.

If you forgot to uncheck Full Screen before exiting, you will have to enter "wine regedit.exe" in your console, navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic IV" and change the key "full_screen" to "0" (which means disabled). Otherwise it won't start.

Credits for finding the workaround go to Johannes S. Thanks!
