Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)

What works

  • Web browsing
  • Changing preferences
  • Customizing toolbar
  • YouTube
  • Zooming
  • Font smoothing

What does not

  • Tabs in title bar
  • Tab names not visible on tabs in the tab bar (even when disabling Linux window decorations in winecfg)
  • Close button on tabs works, but is not visible (hover on the right side of a tab for a "Close Tab" tooltip)
  • Acid3 test crashed it

What was not tested

  • Flash on sites other than YouTube
  • Other plugins like Java, Silverlight, and QuickTime
  • Top Sites
  • Cover flow
  • Bonjour

Additional Comments

Apparently you have to run winetricks corefonts and set iphlpapi.dll to native before running it. Tested with iphlpapi from XP SP1.

HOWTO
(recommend to use latest wine)
  1. Download winetricks (http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks) and run
    sh winetricks corefonts flash
(corefonts prevents a crash; flash lets you view flash pages.)
  2. Download Safari 4 "for Windows XP or Vista" (without Quicktime) from http://www.apple.com/safari/ and run it with
    wine SafariSetup.exe
Deselect Install Bonjour for Windows and Install Apple Software Update.

  3. obtain iphlpapi.dll and place it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
  4. winecfg -> choose libraries tab, add override for iphlpapi.dll, native, builtin and then close winecfg
  5. Start Safari.exe from ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Safari/.
May crash at first start(after animation), but works then.

Multiple tabs
by Steven Hadfield on Wednesday July 14th 2010, 11:17
I think multiple tabs may actually work, but not with the default.

Safari by default opens up the 'Top Sites' by default, which does not currently work. But if you change 'New tabs open with' in Preferences to something that does work (like Empty Page), tabs seem to work.

Unfortunately for me, the tab information is blank, but at least the pages load.

No, it does not work for me :-(

Step 4:

winecfg -> choose libraries tab, add override for iphlpapi.dll, native, builtin and then close winecfg

If I do so, everything stops working (including winecfg). I had to delete iphlpapi.dll and take it out again from winecfg

(Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic, wine 1.0.1)
