Actually no real how-to, but you can use it that way. Checked with 1.1.24.
Installation
Nothing special to mind, simply run $ WINEPREFIX=/path/to/Tropico/prefix wine /path/to/_setup/Setup.exe
Playing
You should cd into the installation directory, otherwise Tropico might fail with an empty error box. Therefore the invocation looks like (if you installed into the default directory): $ cd /path/to/Tropico/prefix/drive_c/Program\ files/Troico && WINEPREFIX=/path/to/Tropico/prefix wine Tropico.EXE
No other settings are needed to become El Presidente.
A few notes on Tropico Gold
I haven't experienced #14987 so far when keeping to the how-to.
The Gold version comes with a PDF of the official strategy guide (English), use it (it's on CD1, CD2 is only needed for installation).
To stay longer in office in later games, play first the tutorials (the one accessible via »Tutorial« and the ones named »El Presidente's * day« (replace the * by something like first, second, third and so on)), because Tropico can be quite difficult the first time.
The handbook might be a good (and entertaining, for that matter) reading too.

Running Tropico Error

wine version: 1.1.29 (Ubuntu)
I receive the following error after trying to run Tropico:
wine Tropico.EXE
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address (nil) (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).
There's more but I'm not sure how useful the dump would be. I'm trying the Mucho Mucho edition which I'm guessing is the same as the gold version. It has 2 CDs. The install was fine. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
