- To get past the "Incomplete Installation" error:
Use Wine-1.1.35 or later - To get past crashing at the MOTD display when joining a multiplayer game:
Either: Use native urlmon.dll (can be limited to just left4dead2.exe),
Or: Use wine-1.1.27 or earlier.
- To improve the performance
1. Enable multicore rendering. This increases performance by 10-15 fps in most places for me.
2. Use the following patch:
http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=24812 This increases performance by 50-60 fps in most places for me. Note that you may need to minimise/restore or otherwise lose and regain focus of the game to fix the flashlight and some textures if using this patch.
The performance is so much better in wine-1.1.33 that this doesn't seem to be needed any more. The framerate with this in wine-1.1.32 was still higher than the framerate without this in wine-1.1.33 though.
- To get past the crashing/restarting/broken game files which occurs every few minutes during gameplay
Add -lv to the launch options in Steam. This enables low gore mode, which for some reason fixes the problem. Low gore mode doesn't look as great, but it's worth it for the stability.

Incomplete Installation error
by Michael Abbott on Sunday November 15th 2009, 3:02
Well, I updated to wine 1.1.33 to get past the error
Incomplete installation of Left 4 Dead 2 Demo (2)
and indeed, I don't get that error anymore. Instead I get
Incomplete installation of Left 4 Dead 2 Demo (53)
This appears to be a new one, looks like this message will be google's first encounter of this precise message! Spends a bit longer "completing installation", so I guess this happens a little bit later...
Crash just before end of load.
by Cody Goldberg on Friday November 13th 2009, 16:42
Using native urlmon, and the steamappscommon.tar.gz download. I can access the menu correctly and everything, but just before its done loading the game, it crashes. Sometimes, it also tries to relaunch the game.
Anyone know what could be wrong here? I'm using Wine 1.1.32.

Crashing in the middle of the demo
by Patrice Hermenault on Saturday November 7th 2009, 13:34
Playing the single-player map, everything's fine (well, except the game is slower than I think it should be with the computer I have... it's still manageable, but if anyone has any advice they'll be welcome!) up until the house after the street with cars in it. There's a house in which there's a staircase blocked by a closet and a few molotov cocktails, pipe bombs and med kits. Whenever I close the door to that house, the game just quits.
Multiplayer does WORK!
by Sabun on Saturday November 7th 2009, 10:28
I don't know what you guys are doing or using but I can get into multiplayer no problem. The server message oddly works no problem here, but for L4D 1 it doesnt work....
I did the .tar.gz thing but thats it. Multiplayer works without any pestering or doing something out of the ordinary.
Why would the network play work in L4D2 but not in L4D1 in Wine 1.1.32??
Whats the difference here?
Getting past the incomplete installation (2) error
by Luke Bratch on Thursday November 5th 2009, 7:11
I've submitted test data explaining this but it hasn't shown up yet. Also in that test data I reported that although you can now into the game menu, you can't actually join a game. This is now fixed by using a friend's install who has a Windows box rather than my virtual machine attempt. It seems the game does further installation once it is launched successfully, which failed in the virtual machine.
Instructions are as follows:
1. Install the L4D2 demo as usual using Steam.
2. Close Steam
3. Download the following file:
www.tghost.co.uk/wine/steamappscommon.tar.gz 4. Extract that file whilst inside the steamapps/ directory of your Steam install directory. For instance:
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/
tar -xvf /path/to/steamappscommon.tar.gz
5. Start Steam and run the L4D2 demo!
I made that archive by comparing the files in a Wine installed version of the L4D2 demo to a Windows installed version. It contains some files that will overwrite existing files, and some new files.
There seems to be some extra installation stuff that happens with L4D2 that doesn't happen with any other Steam game I've come across.
