What does not

The game has sometimes heavy slow downs at Denerim Market.

The game crashes at random, but it is not a common event.

HOWTO stop the flickering black movies and fix the sound

If you see black screen flickering during the cutscenes and on the main screen, you will need to run winetricks strictdrawordering=enabled

To get winetricks, see http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

If the sound cuts out permanently after a couple of minutes (eg during character creation) then you will need to run winecfg, go to the Audio tab, and change Hardware Acceleration to "emulation"

HOWTO get DLC content working

Downloading the DLCs manually seems currently the only way to get them working.

You can find the downloads in the Redeemed DLC Unofficial Troubleshooting and FAQ, section 4.1.

Afterwards install them using the "daupdater.exe" (requires NET 2.0). Please note that they still require online validation.

Strict Draw Ordering no longer needed
by CaptainRedShirt on Sunday May 5th 2013, 0:59
As of wine-1.5.29, I've found that StrictDrawOrdering isn't needed any more. In fact, I've found that there's a bit of odd shadowy flickering in-game if it is enabled, so best to leave it off.

Using DLC manually
by someone on Friday April 5th 2013, 8:13
If you have found DLC downloaded manually, you can use them by launching daupdater.exe in bin_ship folder
If daupdater crash (or can't be launch at all) you can install dotnet20 (also called .NET 2.0) and it should fix the problem (worked for me)

Random crashes
by rkfg on Thursday January 24th 2013, 13:11
I can't tell for sure yet but it seems that turning off the framebuffer effects eliminates these crashes when you open the inventory or such. I play with this option off for the second day and I haven't got a single crash while before it sometimes crashed right after opening the inventory windows for the first time! The error which accompanied the crash is still in the log but it doesn't affect the game anymore it seems:

Nvidia optimus (gt640m). This and other games constantly crashes with error: VGL PBO buffer size error...
The solution is to specify the environment variable VGL_READBACK = synс. And of course WINEDEBUG =-all

Unsync sound...
by Mariano on Wednesday July 25th 2012, 21:11
Hey, running the game with all DLCs, no problems at all, with wine 1.4. The problem is sound is a bit "late" (about 1 second behind), which is seriously annoying (specially during all those nice movie scenes). :)

I played the game for the first time without any DLC's (there weren't any back then), I think I used wine 1.2, and sound worked fine (actually, everything did).

Anyone had a similar problem?

Crashes in the fade during sloth fight.
by Tim Cooper on Tuesday June 26th 2012, 10:32
Hey all, I am playing through the game.
The game crashes are reduced after patching, but it still crashes a lot at various times, or if playing for a while. The fade has been horrible, and I have attempted to fight Sloth 4 times and I cant get through it. If I totally reboot, I can get to sloth's 3rd change. But usually it crashes on the first or second change. The game crashes right when the boss dies.

game crashes when playing mage
by Yuki on Wednesday February 1st 2012, 2:29
for some reason, the game just crashes, when I pick a mage. The intro plays just fine, the 1st dialogues are no problem, but as soon as I choose "I'm ready" and gameplay would start, the game just crashes.
Anyone experienced the same or better: knows a fix/workaround?

installation still crashes when it tries to install physx
by Laurell on Monday December 12th 2011, 12:53
I installed physx before installing the game. I tried the version from the DA disc and i installed physx using winetricks with an old version of winetricks and the newest. With none of these the installation would finish. It still crashes.

Are there any solutions?

Texture/models "flicker"
by John on Wednesday March 23rd 2011, 15:19
I've been getting this weird problem while playing DA:O 1.04 on wine 1.3.16

Once in a while (approx every 30 mins, sometimes more often) the game's textures and models would "flicker" or reload or something.

The game would freeze for like 5 secs then heavily textured objects (armor, hair, buildings, etc..) would turn black leaving only the less textured objects (usually the faces and exposed arms, ground, etc..) on the screen. It would go back to normal and unfreeze after about 15 secs.

The game is still playable with this, but it's annoying having it freeze and "flicker" every couple of minutes.

Anyone else experience this?

I know my problem description was bad, I'll try to upload a screenshot when I get a chance.

Thanks

New issue with DLC
by Justin on Monday March 21st 2011, 23:27
Hi all,

I've been fighting with this all day: when running daupdater.exe, I would consistently get crashes, and it seemed to have to do with the dotnet20 package. I was using 1.3.16.

When I downgraded to 1.2.2, daupdater.exe magically worked.

Any ideas on why?

by John on Saturday March 19th 2011, 21:29
I recently installd DA:O using the latest PlayOnLinux DA:O script and patched it to 1.04

Using Wine 1.3.16, the game runs nicely except for this one problem: I can't seem to attack, damage, or kill enemies and they also don't seem to be able to damage me.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Bink Video Flickering + Choppyness
by Andrew on Thursday February 10th 2011, 5:54
Okay, I've been through this entire page and tried everything minus applying patches to Wine itself, which I'd like to avoid if possible.

I have a ATI 3870,, Arch Linux, Dragon Age installed via PlayOnLinux in a Wine 1.3.9 prefix and thanks to POL (I couldnt get the game to run on the latest Wine properly myself) the game actually plays quite well, at least on lowish settings.

The problem is the actual videos (Bink videos, not ingame) have enormous flicker and run extremely choppy and/or are very erratic, pretty much unwatchable. Any ideas? Tried the ini tweaks, fullscreen/non fullscreen etc, nothing seems to affect it. I even tried with out sound enabled, same result. So seems a video issue perhaps, it's rather annoying because the actual game which should be much more taxing on the system runs quite well :S

Black Flickering
by Phil on Saturday January 15th 2011, 17:37
If you have black flickering in videos and menus; open DragonAge.ini with a text editor and look for DisableMRT=0 and change it to DisableMRT=1. The location should be something like '/home/user/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Settings' depending how you have WINE setup for personal folders.

Game installs and runs, but performance is HORRIBLE
by Echonaut on Tuesday December 21st 2010, 20:00
Wine 1.3.9
Installed DAO via PlayOnLinux, as well as through vanilla Wine
Latest Nvidia drivers
All settings to LOW

Core 2 Duo E8400
GTX 260
8GB RAM
Fedora 14 32bit PAE

Even at the lowest settings, at 1440x900, the game is absolutely unplayable. The game runs fine, no errors or anything, but the frame rate is HORRENDOUS. I can play it fine in Windows, and get decent performance, but this is just abysmal.

Is there any magical switch that I need to flip in order to get it running at a decent speed?

by Andrew on Tuesday September 14th 2010, 22:29
Hi,

I'm playing game version 1.0.3 with Wine 1.2 and 1.3.2 (two different machines). I don't see any character model at the character creation screen, so all my characters come out bald :-(

Everything else works well.

I'm using nvidia driver 256.53 currently, though had the same problem with earlier driver versions

Any one else have this problem or know a fix?

Blog page with notes on getting 1.04 working
by Dan Kegel on Saturday September 11th 2010, 9:55
zapakitul.wordpress.com/2010/09/10/getting-dragon-age-origins-v-1-04-to-work-on-ubuntu-10-04-and-wine/
says
--- snip ---
making sure you have a clean version of Wine (no runtimes,
no dotnet, no .dll’s installed), proceed and run the Setup
for DA:O. After it’s done, update it to the latest version.
Then, go ahead and install the following:

corefonts
d3dx9 (and d3dx9_28, d3dx9_36, d3dx10, d3dx0f) dll’s
dotnet20 and then dotnet30
physx
vcrun6
vcrun2005
vcrun2008
Now, when you will run the game, you will noticed that… Taddaaahh!! It works like a charm! No screen flickering, no inverted colors, the soundtrack can be enjoyed at it’s full, and Morigan is as bitc friendly as ever!

maybe it helps
by Igor S. on Tuesday August 24th 2010, 12:18
Not sure, but I think that crashes are very related to strategy view mode (from above). Crashes may appear most often during battle when opening inventory, or at mouse holes (in dream level, when destination isn't cached in memory, if it is or if destination is near, game doesn't crash), or in some random zones (I just switched to 3rd person view and walked through one of them - and it was the only working solution).

P.S. and don't install vc redist 2008, it will break the game

1.04 and msvcp80.dll problems
by sn4re on Thursday July 22nd 2010, 13:15
I'm having problems with the game ever since the upgrade to version 1.04 (previous versions ran without trouble).

I can get to the main menu and load a game, but within seconds after having loaded the game it crashes with the log found here:

pastebin.com/B8gBfL2C

The only big change that I can see (and also suspect is the problem), is that starting from 1.04 it uses msvcp80.dll, which was not included with 'winetrick vcrun2005', so I had to get a native version and use that. I might be mistaken in thinking that the problem lies there, but that's my best bet...

Sound issues
by Echor on Tuesday July 20th 2010, 7:57
Hi. I've successfully installed DA:O and the game seems to run without a problem with the exception of sound.

I've tried every solution posted here to fix the sound issues (setting the driver emulation/normal, messing around with alsa/oss, settting mmdevapi on/off) but nothing seems to work for me.
Sound seems to work in the launcher, or atleast the buttons make sounds. In the configuration utility thing there is no sound device listed at all in the sound tab.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cannot install Awakening
by John on Thursday June 10th 2010, 15:38
At one point I had Dragon Age running and going fine except for a .NET issue that would cause it to crash once in a while that came from a botched .Net 2.0 install. To remedy this, I purged wine and deleted my wine folder and went to reinstall everything from scratch -- /sigh, what a mistake.

I can't get Awakening to install anymore, it consistently crashes at the same exact spot every time. I used winetricks to install d3dx9 and vcrun2005 before I started installing the game but it's not helping. I'm at a loss of what to do, I'd appreciate any help or advice on how others went about installing their game.

I have revisited dragon age and have the problem of sound only lasting a few minutes. I thought with the official ubuntu release it might stop (I was using beta). Does anyone else have this same problem. I tried with and without playonlinux, 1.01a to 1.03, copied my windows version over.... nothing 1.42, 1.41, 1.39 patched for flickering ... same problem. Flickering
by Henri Verbeet on Friday April 16th 2010, 4:42
To save some people a regression test, 1.1.43 will reintroduce some flickering in Dragon Age. This is caused by 8eb2a2cf0c50f986cd136af13814dae0991cb837 and intentional, though unfortunate. See the commit message for that patch for details.

Setting the "StrictDrawOrdering" Direct3D registry key introduced by that patch to "enabled" should restore the old behaviour for Dragon Age.

I updated wine to 1.1.42. Install crashes on physx, but I installed it with winetricks. Also, I installed vc2005. When I try to run daorigins.exe loader image appears and nothing else happens. I get no errors in wine, I can wait for half an hour without any result.
Here is console output

Fix for flickering screen
by Roger Shaffer on Tuesday February 16th 2010, 23:22
After following the above directions, I would still have a flickering screen when running Dragon's Age. However, by toggling the V-sync checkbox, the flickering would go away. It didn't matter if it was on and I turned it off or vice-versa, but everytime I restarted the game, I needed to change the state and it would work perfectly.

Works with 1.38 but not DLC
by E. Norminton on Wednesday February 10th 2010, 8:33
I updated to wine 1.38 and was able to install the game on a fresh unpatched 1.38 version of WINE (on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64). I then installed the 1.02 patch and the only thing I required was to manage the lack of DVD detection.

The game runs at full graphics almost perfectly ... once or twice I noticed slight graphics issues but very very minor.

However I can't get the game to recognize my Blood Armour or Stone Prisoner. They work fine in Windows and with wine I can get downloaded DLC that doesn't require online activation to work but not the online activation.

Running "wine daupdater.exe" gives the message "install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables". If I use winetricks to install mono20, mono22, or mono 24 I get a window that pops up but it's empty. I've not tried dotnet20 ... has anyone had the same issues and what do you do to get the DLC?

daupdatersvc.service.exe also gives the same message with no winetricks ... it appears to work with mono installed but it doesn't help the game authorize the DLC.

WINE 1.1.38 without any patches
by Lith Maethor on Sunday February 7th 2010, 8:24
Tried the game (version 1.02 with a crapload of DLCs and mods) with the latest version of WINE, but without any of the patches listed here. Performance seems to have improved radically, no more black flickering and finally no more black portraits!

and then, I tried to Return to Ostagar... I am not sure whether it was due to the long hours of playing or this is a new problem, but everything slowed down to a crawl just before the final encounter, with black textures replacing bodies, movies freezing and eventually the game crashing. I tried lowering the settings, something that usually worked before, but the black textures came back with a vengeance... it was almost as bad as activating AA with FBO on.

Working fine with unpatched WINE
by Lynxy on Saturday January 30th 2010, 0:30
I was able to get Dragon Age: Origins to run fine under unpatched (default) WINE. The only problems I face are:

1) Cannot use anti-aliasing or it will flicker
2) I must minimize and and restore the game to stop initial flicker
3) The mouse is still overly sensitive/glitchy

I use the following registry keys:
DirectDrawRenderer = gdi
Multisampling = true
OffscreenRenderingMode = fbo
PixelShaderMode = enabled
RenderTargetLockMode = auto
UseGLSL = disabled

The DA:Origins config file just uses the settings as described in the How-to above.

Specs:
WINE 1.1.37, Ubuntu 9.10 x64, NVIDIA GTX 275

Hope this helps some people.

Failed to patch on MAC OS
by Ant on Thursday January 21st 2010, 10:54
First of all, I'm kind of a n00b using the terminal and all, so maybe I'm doing something ridiculously obvious wrong...
I tried applying the 3 patches (using patch -p1 < path1.diff) and all of them return "can't find file to patch in line #" and return a "File to patch:" I tried entering "a/dlls/wine3d/device.c", but with no luck.
Also if I do everything else (add gecko, install the game, install PhysX) and try to run the game I get a message saying "No compatible Video card detected" (if I run it in full screen), or it just crashes right after the intro videos, which of course I can't see (if I run it in windowed mode). Is that supposed to happen?

P.S. I have a Nvidia GT 130

Crash on install.
by fredric on Wednesday December 30th 2009, 13:31
I've tried installing the game with Wine 1.1.32, 1.1.33 and 1.1.34, but the installer quits in the same place. This seems to be related to the .net framework that DAO needs. Here's a snippet of the error message from wine:

err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles compressed file wasn't extracted (L"C:\\windows\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework\\v2.0.50727\\prcp.nlp")
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallExecute" returned 1603

Is anyone else getting this? I've tried installing dotnet20sp with winetricks and come up with the same error. Thanks.

DAO under SL 10.6.2
by Brian on Tuesday December 22nd 2009, 8:17
I did manage to run it under snow leopard, but only on LOW settings with an nVidia card in my system, I normally run an ATI4870. With anything other then low settings I would get crashes on the NV card, and I would get texture issues w/ the ATI on low settings and flicker on high settings. When I tried all 3 patches, I would get crashes after the character creator, I think because of an autosave? I also had the same/similar results with Crossover Games.

I gave up and bought the "official" ciderized port, which so far has worked just fine except w/ USB sound devices. Funny They don't have it working with USB sound (sounds like blown speakers), but USB sound works fine with wine and Crossover Games.

Running DAO on MacOSX: Hitting wall with R6034 error...
by Marvin Arnold on Wednesday December 16th 2009, 15:27
Here's what happened on MacOSX, 10.6.2:

Note: DAO runs well on CrossOver Games demo, but has the issues that can be fixed with the wine patches mentioned above

- compiled wine with three patches
- fresh Wine directory, set to Win2000
- installed winetricks: d3dx9 physx gecko vcrun2005 msxml3 (via CLI).

- installed DAO, installer crashed as predicted when trying to install PhysX.
- installed PhysX 9.09.1112
- patched DAO to 1.01b
- made registry entry as described above

Launcher runs, config application works (as opposed to Crossover, where it doesn't).
When trying to launch actual game, it exits with this error:
"R 6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly."

terminal tells me:

Complete crash at main menu
by Dan on Friday December 11th 2009, 11:58
When the game hits the main menu (I haven't seen the intro movies yet, but those are turned off anyway), the graphical errors are so bad that it freezes up my entire system. After a few seconds, the mouse doesn't move, no keyboard commands work, and eventually my screen goes black and I get a no signal error from my monitor.

I patched Wine with all 3 patches. I have the other stuff required to run the game (PhysX and DirectX and all that jazz). I did the registry keys and .ini settings.

I well exceed the system requirements for the game, so unless there's a problem with the Nvidia GeForce GTS 250..

The only thing I can think of is that I possibly didn't patch Wine correctly (it does say some might require manual application, but I don't know how to do that), or it could be that I'm using Wine 1.1.34 (if I need 1.1.33, how do it patch and compile it while staying at that version?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

* The sound shutter somewhat, not to bad though
* There is still some graphics glitches (green and yellow)
* I can only have on the lowest graphics setting or the black graphics comes back
* I got the mouse problems.
* Of cause I need the nocd crack :/
Other than that I can finally play without reboot.

ATI card plus Physx in 64bit
by Juan Antonio Garcia on Sunday December 6th 2009, 2:53
There is still hope for the ATI owners. I have an ATI HD 4550 and I have started to play the game. A bit of details of what I use and what have done:

- I use Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 64bit with ATI Catalyst 9.11 drivers

- I use wine 1.1.33 with the patch bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20469
I cannot tell if this patch is important for the ATI cards. I just installed because I was getting garbage, but still I was getting garbage afterwards. I have note tested it without the patch.

- I installed Physx with winetricks so probably it is not the last version. I will try to install the last version and see if there is any difference. As I have a 64bit system I used this link to install Physx: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8443581&posted=1#post8443581

- otherwise I followed the installation mentioned on the top, except that my DragonAge VideoOptions settings are lower.

- what was important in my case was:

* disable desktop 3D effect (KDE 3D effects in my cae)
* set FullScreen=0 in DragonAge.ini (windowed mode)
* if I play full screen I just se garbage

- even so, when I start the game and go to the ingame I get weird colors if I have the Graphics detail higher than low. So in the game I press ESC to get to the menu, go to Options and change the Graphic detail to minimum and then back to the ingame. The the texture colors are ok. Then I press ESC again, go to Options again and I set the Graphics to maximum. I go back to the ingame and magically the texture colors are ok and the Graphics are at maximum.

- videos flicker for me

- as I play in windowed mode I have noticed that if you minimize or move the windows it may happen that my computer will crash...

I will report if I get any improvements. Please report if you get any better results. Any good hint is welcome since this game will be played go years.

Final words: huge thanks to WINE developers. WINE is the impossible made real. They are the Great Wardens of the OS freedom.

I'm running wine 1.33 (unpatched) on a laptop, with recently installed karmic, and an ATI mobility HD3470 (runned by catalyst 9.11).

My report: The game installed fine except for the PhysX, and the launcher launchs fine, but when I try to launch the game (play button) I can't access the intro movie: screen display is becomes complete garbage, and I can hear sound only for a few seconds then. Finally I need to ALT F4.

Have completed DA: O 2 times now fully in linux under wine
by MacNean on Monday November 30th 2009, 19:36
Basically what the title says. Fullscreen, 1440x900, MRT enabled, Full graphics, Textures, AA (Wrote a script to turn AA off before the game ran, than I would turn it on in game, this removed all flickering for me).

Most excellent experience.

(Yes I installed from DVD but downloaded a noCD crack as for me it's not an ethical issues as I bought the game legit so should be able to do this, should have an option to verify online or something along the lines of Steam IMO).

Game DVD access - why no bug?
by Richard Griffith on Monday November 30th 2009, 17:01
I see others reporting that install from the CD works but the game fails to run because the game/launcher cannot see the DVD. People have said to get the steam version of the game and it works.

Can someone comment on why there is no bug on this? Is it something WINE cannot do? It seems there is a real problem.

Shouldn't the problems be referenced to a gamestop(?) or equivalent bug report. So an existing bug can be modified to include DragonAge: Origins DVD version.

Frustration
by Oberon on Monday November 30th 2009, 15:30
Not sure what's going on, but having a HECK of a time. Followed all of the steps/suggestions/configs with varying degrees of no success. Running E8300 4 GB(OS only sees 3) RAM, GeForce 9600GT Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit, 2.6.31-15 kernel using wine version 1.1.33. The best result I've managed so far is to get it to NOT give me an error dialog and die. Usually, DragonAgeConfig.exe crashes, and if I give it the config information from a windoze install it runs, but does nothing and only stalls and I have to kill the process. The only anomaly that I've noticed is that if I browse files in the launcher's documentation browser, the "My Documents" folder doesn't appear, and everything config related points there. Obviously I'm missing something since others have not had this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to have to use a windows box if I can help it. :)

Script to set AA to 0
by MacNean on Tuesday November 17th 2009, 18:06
Since when running the game with AA over 0, causes FBO to fail, but enabling AA once the game is running removes flickering for me, I came up with a script to auto set it to 0:

nano rundragonage.sh

#! /bin/bash

sed -i 's/\(AntialiasingLevel\)=.*/\1=0/' /home//BioWare/Dragon\ Age/Settings/DragonAge.ini
wine /home//Programs/Dragon\ Age/DAOriginsLauncher.exe

(save and exit)

chmod u+x rundragonage.sh

Mouse problem
by Anton W on Tuesday November 17th 2009, 12:36
Hi,

i have a weird mouse issue in the game. When i hold Right-Mouse-Button and move the mouse to the right, the screen rotates to the right. (i am still holding the button) now i move the mouse to the left, the screen still rotates to the right untill i move over the position i pushed the mouse button and then it starts moving to the left. Does anyone know how to fix this, its kinda annoying.

thanks.

I see your comment about not playable cause of not being able to crack. Have you tried registering your game with Steam and playing that way?

BTW winetricks now installs PHYSX so I used that instead myself. If you do go steam route you'll need gecko ./winetricks gecko for the html rendering.

If your cutscenes are still flickering, try to apply the following patch: pastebin.ca/1674185

Bewarned! This is a temporary, cheap hack that may break other games.

Actual game itself is platinium for sure, but I still think ratings here are for usability of sofware under wine.

Like I stated originally, if games uses any sort of DRM, which is not functional under wine without crack, those software are garbage in point of view from wine, because those cannot be used.

NWN2 had same thing in initial release and got fixed by obsidian (either by patch or 1st add-on, don't recall anymore which one), so it was fully playable under wine without any cracks after that, but not before.

ps. and yes, I have my very own bought copy of game right here, but looks like I must get another one for ps3 and argue with kids, when I can play it.

by niceduck on Monday November 16th 2009, 12:26
Granting anything above garbage for any game or application, which cannot run under wine without 3rd party CRACK is nonsense.

DA doesn't even have any fancy DRM check, and yet it fails to see original DVD.
If this is not flaw on wine, then it is flaw on game side, but anyway, this is garbage as long as it doesn't work without crack !

Wine 1.1.33, Ubuntu 9.10

[post new] [reply to this]

How mine is working:
by MacNean on Sunday November 15th 2009, 8:35
Full screen 1440x900 (max my laptop will go). I have another computer with windows, almost same specs, and runs about the same.

I use both patches:
bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20469

bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22894

Wine 1.1.33, nvidia 190.42 drivers, Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

I'm able to use AA to max, graphics to max, textures to max, and FBO turned on. I had to turn off nvidia-settings AA overide settings, and set multisampling to enabled in the registry. Not sure if AA is actually supported in wine yet, but at least the slider works, heh/

The portraits are black, but everything else is perfect.

Well the movies in the first few seconds flicker, but once they flicker in the beginning they then play fine the rest of the way through. I'm like 20 something hours in, and it's awesome. I get about the same FPS/responsiveness as a windows machine i tried it on with almost the same specs.

They only thing, mouse was way to sensitive in linux, had to turn the setting down to like .08.

I obviously had to get the NOCD crack, and have it patched with 1.01a.

I would change my thing to gold at this time, as the portraits being black is a tiny issue for me. I mean right now monitors next to each other, looks identical. Most excellent.

Status so far
by Dave M on Saturday November 14th 2009, 12:02
Playing full screen 1680x1050.

1. Cinematics work, but are flickery/choppy.
2. Portrait/doll displays but skin is black.
3. Performance is... "meh." It's not great (not nearly as good as if I boot into Windows).

Hopefully I can figure out resolutions to the above.

cannot resume from pause after item added to inventory
by Daniele on Saturday November 14th 2009, 7:57
Hi. everyone.

Game runs fine, but with one blocking problem that does not seem to be related to any hardware issue.

When in the game I receive an object from a characther, or I found in some place, the game pauses telling me about the new inventory item.
Problem is: I cannot resume from this pause. Normally pause works perfetly, but in this situation, each time. This is completely blocking. I think is my particular issue, any idea about a workaround? Maybe changing this behavior that make a pause to occur after the item is added to inventory.

But this problem, I confirm that game runs fine after setting DisableMRT=1 to remove flickering. I am using OSS backend from Wine Audio Control Panel cause works better than ALSA one.

No Sound
by Mark  Ackerman  on Saturday November 14th 2009, 7:18
The game seems to have installed fine but I have no sound at all.

I tried, "running the .exe file right from the ship_bin directory", with no success, and

I tried, the suggestions for the .ini file (nothing seemed disabled there) and that didn't help either.

BUT, In the Game settings it does not show anything under the audio section for hardware???

Anyone have any suggestions
Thanks in Advance

Tweaking... runs at about gold level now
by maaddog on Friday November 13th 2009, 1:22
Hi Guys,

Just a note, after many hours of tweaking and testing I have Dragon Age working full screen @1920x1200 with all effects on and it looks great!

There are only 2 issues remaining, while i patched wine to fix the movies slightly they still display black bars and are distorted, but watchable.

The last minor issue is that the portrait displays black as well as the character doll in the inventory, the actual in-game models are fine :)

To fix the movie issue (from no display to at least something) i applied this patch:
bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20469

To fix the black texture issue during gameplay, I applied this patch:
bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22894

I am running nvidia 190.42, Kubuntu 9.10 64bit. GTX 260 XFX SuperClocked, ASUS P55, Core i7

I have also changed allot of settings everywhere... so if the two above fixes dont work for you post back and ill list some of the other options i have adjusted.

To re-iterate, I have Frame buffer effects, AA, High Detail textures, and high detail graphics, full screen @ 1920x1200.

With the fixes, this would be a Gold rating. Well im back to playing, i hope this helps someone ;)

Digital Edition
by lateo on Wednesday November 11th 2009, 15:30
Ok, bought the digital edition from eastore.
of course, couldn't download the game because of the crappy download manager.
but i managed to get the files thanks to a friend of mine.

then, using playonlinux, created a new prefix, installed directx9.0c, .Net framework.
Then i installed the game. looks fine. physx install looks ok. adobe air install looks ok. error on EAAccessInstaller. damn.

Try to install EAAccessthing alone (from software subdirectory from the files downloaded). looks ok.
Also install physX from Nvidia website after reading this page, install ok.

Now time to tweek wine, Direct3D regedit and other stuff as usual. should be ok.

Now, testing.
- DAOLaucher ok. great!
- Configure screen. oops : Video, Audio, Connexion screens are blank. looks bad (hardware not detected?).
- Pushing "Play" button : epic fail.

i can see the process running, but nothing happens.
running daorigins.exe directly won't help.

played with the ini file. didn't help.

flickering fix
by Toussis Manolis on Tuesday November 10th 2009, 8:49
Here, amd64 with nvidia 190.xx
I run the game in fullscreen 1280x1024, graphics and textures to 0.
And framebuffer effects off from the in game option.
I start the game.
And it flickers like crazy. I load my save, and then I use the wheel to go to panoramic camera mode.
I then use the arrow keys to pan the view to all the extends...
Miracle. Flickering dissapears.
I have then a little flickering only on videos.

Notice this: I had exactly the same problem after a little gameplay on the nvidia version of the game in the same system. The problem was appearing after a little time. In windows the problem solved with a driver update to latest nvidia.

Pbuffer > fbo
by Eddahbi Karim on Monday November 9th 2009, 18:29
For this game, Pbuffer can be more useful since texture flickering doesn't happen when I'm using this configuration. It seems that the rendering is multithreaded, since pbuffer claims it can't do that.
I guess that the fbo rendering is multithread friendly but this causes problem here.

Anyway, the only problem I got is sound related.

Black videos?
by Mike on Wednesday November 4th 2009, 21:08
It seems like everyone else is doing alright as far as videos go, but all I get is a black screen and audio. I had the same problem with the character creator. The suggestions for the .ini file don't help. I play a number of other games and I don't really have (m)any visual problems, so I don't know what I could be doing wrong here.

wine-1.1.32, Xorg 1.6.4, NVIDIA GTX260 with 180.44 drivers. Here's my Direct3D settings:

[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
"PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
"UseGLSL"="enabled"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
"VideoMemorySize"="768"

Any suggestions?

Well I'm using the last 1.1.32. Apar from that, all I know is that I'm using a separate prefix for the game and that I've installed winetricks with vcrun2005 and vcrun2005sp1.

To install those two you have to run:
wget www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
bash winetricks vcrun2005
bash winetricks vcrun2005sp1

However, I have no idea if that is what made the installation of physx work for me.
