Old test results
The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)

What works
Install/gameplay

What does not
have to lose focus and regain focus to get keyboard events to register properly. game seems to crash when everyone dies - needs more testing.

What was not tested
Most of the game. this report is just a heads up that wine-1.1.35 works.

Additional Comments

Works, but crashes and performance is bad.

My system specs:
Intel Q6600
Asus P5K Deluxe/WiFi (P35)
nVidia 8800 GTS 640MB
8GB DDR2-800 RAM

I get mostly 15-20fps at 1920x1200. Setting video to low doesn't increase FPS. wine-1.1.35 (32bit) compile with no patches.

HOWTO
- To get past the "Incomplete Installation" error:

Use Wine-1.1.35 or later

- To get past crashing at the MOTD display when joining a multiplayer game:

Either: Use native urlmon.dll (can be limited to just left4dead2.exe),
Or: Use wine-1.1.27 or earlier.

- To improve the performance

1. Enable multicore rendering.  This increases performance by 10-15 fps in most places for me.
2. Use the following patch:
http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=24812
This increases performance by 50-60 fps in most places for me.  Note that you may need to minimise/restore or otherwise lose and regain focus of the game to fix the flashlight and some textures if using this patch.
The performance is so much better in wine-1.1.33 that this doesn't seem to be needed any more.  The framerate with this in wine-1.1.32 was still higher than the framerate without this in wine-1.1.33 though.

- To get past the crashing/restarting/broken game files which occurs every few minutes during gameplay

Add -lv to the launch options in Steam.  This enables low gore mode, which for some reason fixes the problem.  Low gore mode doesn't look as great, but it's worth it for the stability.

I've tried Left 4 Dead 2 and Counter Strike Global Offensive!
by Jack J on Sunday April 14th 2013, 6:31
Okay, so I'm trying to play either Left 4 Dead 2 or Counter Strike Global Offensive but whenever I start either game, I get a bunch of graphic issues...I can hear the sound just fine, here is a screenshot of me trying to load L4D2...img443.imageshack.us/img443/2919/screenshotat20130414072.png don't mind the other monitor. Sometimes the screen will be blue, I can listen to the whole video, so the audio is fine...Here is the output from Terminal when launching it by "wine left4dead2.exe"

Cant join mp games
by Nihil on Wednesday January 23rd 2013, 4:26
Everytime i try to join a mp game I get a message asking me to delete -insecure at launch, I have verified this parameter is not in the launch properties in Steam for this game.

On the other hand I cant start the game from steam, I have to execute first steam and then the game, I dont know if the problem is here but the game runs fine playing solo.

freezes
by spitfire on Tuesday October 30th 2012, 5:26
My L4D2 freezes for ~3 seconds every time a "special" zombie (for example charger) death animation is played. It looks like it takes few seconds to load this anim/effect to memory.. Other then that the performance is just awesome, 60+ fps all the time. Does anyone have a clue what to do with this?

Wine 1.5.16
GTX 285 with NVIDIA drivers
Native dx9

... hmm maybe I should try with wine dx9...

Playable, but not perfect
by Colin Robinson on Monday October 22nd 2012, 23:12
I launch Steam via a bashrc alias:
alias steam='WINEDEBUG=-all wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/Steam/Steam.exe -no-dwrite >/dev/null 2>&1 &'

From Steam, I launch L4D2 via these launch options:
-console -toconsole -dxlevel 90 -novid -refresh 60 -w 1680 -h 1050 -windowed -noborder -noipx -nojoy

Frame Rate:
Max - 50
Min - 10
Average - 25

Notes:
- Enabling Anti-Aliasing turns the screen black and can only be disabled by editing video.txt
- Adjusting the quality options has no effect of quality or frame rate. In Windows I can run the game at maximum quality and get an average frame rate of about 80.

System:
Arch Linux x86_64 w/ proprietary AMD/ATI Catalyst driver

pak01_dir.vpk error returns?
by Collin on Monday July 16th 2012, 6:21
I was playing an online campaign, when all of a sudden my sounds were going on and off, and then the subtitles were breaking into 1's and 0's and x's.

I was not using the latest unstable wine however, I was using the Debian Sid repositories that was up to 1.5.6, I will downgrade to 1.4.1 and see if that's just a regression from the unstable branch.

Wants me to enable texture composition?
by Holly616 on Monday June 25th 2012, 1:43

It tells me that it wont run because texture composition is disabled. then it gives me the following url support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2537-DLCV-6627

Thing is my graphics is integrated and older so i cant use proprietary drivers. I have been able to run the non-steam version before a while back so i know this laptop can run it on linux. It has also ran it flawlessly on windows.

What exactly am i missing? What do i need to install to make this run?

The game for me has performance issues... like low framerates. I'm just wondering, because with the same hardware, it runs faster on windows. Plus the loading screens take forever, like 10 minutes or more. and can't aim, As in moving the mouse when you're playing does nothing.

L4D2 runtime error pure virtual call
by Zootal on Wednesday May 9th 2012, 15:03
Crash wnen going to menu. Runtime error! R6025 - pure virtual function call. Any idea how to get past this? Wine 1.5.3, Slackware 64 bit 13.37.

I'll try different versions of wine, this may be a 1.5.3 issue.

Anyone had this issue?:
Screen continuously turns all yellow, with only your teammates visible. Enemies, terrain, etc are not visible. It turns yellow off and on.

It makes the game rather unplayable.

Doesn't run with wine 1.3.34 on Arch Linux
by Tomas Heger on Wednesday December 28th 2011, 20:11
Hi everyone!

I am running wine 1.3.34 on Arch Linux and I wanted to try L4D2 but when I tried it, this is what I got:

$ wine left4dead2.exe
err:secur32:SECUR32_initSchannelSP TLS library not found, SSL connections will fail
err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.
err:wgl:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo couldn't initialize OpenGL, expect problems
AppFramework : Unable to create system Physics2 Interface v0.5!
err:d3d_caps:WineD3D_CreateFakeGLContext Can't find a suitable iPixelFormat.
err:d3d:InitAdapters Failed to get a gl context for default adapter
Direct3D9 is not available without OpenGL.
Failed to create D3D9!
System (VMaterialSystem080) failed during stage CONNECTION

I googled a bit and I found an advice to install 32bit version of driver utils (I use nvidia proprietary driver version 290.10), so I did (I had to uninstall lib32-libgl package first because of a conflict). Now this happens... I run steam, then I run L4D2. It runs but on the screen it only flashes shortly and like minimalize - I see it in taskbar, I can hear the sound but it is impossible to see the game. When I try to "return the game from the taskbar", it only flashes (black screen) again. After some time error message appears - it reads "Runtime Error! Program: R6025 - pure virtual function call". I can choose only "OK", then wine error reading "The program left4dead2.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the invonvenience. ..." appears.
Wine/game output is this...

$ wine left4dead2.exe
err:secur32:SECUR32_initSchannelSP TLS library not found, SSL connections will fail
err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.

Bug assignment
by quaker on Friday May 20th 2011, 9:22
Can some maintainer here assign this bug to the application? It's not only TF2 specific.

About “Incomplete Installation” errors
by Baustein on Sunday March 20th 2011, 19:26
I'm using wine 1.3.11. You should use at least the same.
If after the Steam application has finished dowloadming left4dead2, it throwes an error "Incomplete Installation (2)" check if your wine directory is not a symlink and is your ~/.wine folder and you aren't using WINEPREFIX. Don't know, why, but the Steam doesn't like that kind of manipulation. This is especially important, if you're stupid enough for using playonlinux or winetricks.

After i moved my winefolder as it L4D2 requires, i got an "Incomplete Installation (55)" error, but since second time i ran the game, it goes perfectly with no errors.

However, i cannot run L4D2 directly from Steam app, I have to run Steam first, then left4dead2.exe

After increasing the FD limits in Debian Squeeze x64..
by Collin on Saturday March 19th 2011, 21:27
Everything works perfectly, no glitches, no nothing, the only exception is that during the intro movie, the voices and some sound effects are very low.

Does anybody know of a good recording software that can record audio output for Debian and post my stuff on YT to share?

About gameoverlayrenderer.dll + a requested fix
by Collin on Saturday March 12th 2011, 11:37
Why is it that I'm the only one that never has an issue with this?

Yesterday I was in a versus game with a couple of friends and the gameoverlay worked perfectly, no drops, no crashes, no nothing, the only reason why L4D2 crashed was because of an open file descriptor Limit that I don't know how to change in Debian Squeeze 64. Does anybody know of a fix for this?

Aside from that, does anybody other than me have to do any overriding in the winecfg?

Crash During Level Load (ServiceServiceStart: failed to start) Fix
by Josh on Saturday January 29th 2011, 23:20
Recently my girlfriend had been having trouble with Left 4 Dead freeding during level load (at about 50%), and then maybe a minute later crash to desktop.

Console output when the game locked up was "Failed to load Steam ServiceServiceStart: failed to start".

We were able to fix the problem by renaming SteamService.exe as suggested in the solution to problem 9 in the beolow URL.

black screen
by Stuart on Saturday January 15th 2011, 11:55
Ever since yesterday's (Jan 14, 2011) update I can navigate the menus fine but starting a game gives me a black screen with the film grain, hud, and player names visible, I can also sometimes see the outline glows on items/teammates. I've tried adjusting anti-aliasing settings and changing the windows version in winecfg with no luck.

Admittedly I haven't bothered to enable Swap (I'm on Arch, Intel Dual Core E5200, ATI 3870, 2 gb ram), but I was playing for about an hour and it was alright except for the sound disappearing..however eventually everything slowed to a complete crawl, I could barely do anything in the system.

Alt-F2'd into a virtual terminal and got htop up and found I was using all my 2gb of ram..kill L4D2 and my ram returns to just 300mb almost instantly.

It has to be a leak surely?

pak01_dir.vpk error
by mzneverdies on Tuesday December 14th 2010, 15:12
I'm experiencing a "server inconsistency" error when playing campaign or survival (vs seems to be ok, but haven't tested enough to be sure)

i have deleted the file (steam/steamapps/common/left\ 4\ dead\ 2/update/pak01_dir.vpk) and checked game integrity through steam to redownload the file, but this seems not to fix it.

for what i've read (not checked by myself) a binary check though this file and the same file on a windows machine, it has no diferences at all.

currently running wine 1.3.9, and steam is installed on my home (ext4)

anyone else experiencing same issue? is quite annoying since i can't finish a single chapter without getting disconnected two or three times :(

incomplete installation
by mzneverdies on Thursday December 2nd 2010, 6:11
i've been dealing with this for a couple of days, and after trying and failing, i've managed to run l4d2 succesfully.

and the fix (in my case) was really simple.

i just moved the steam dir from my ntfs partition to my ext4 partition, and done! before that i used to have a symlink from ~/.wine/drive/Games@ to /media/windows/Games (Steam dir was inside Games dir on ntfs), i just deleted my symlink, moved the whole Games dir (wich was HUGE btw), reopened steam, al launched l4d2.
"Completing installation" dialog appeared, but did not fail on 1%, and after the check, the game launched, showing valves intro, l4d2 intro, and then the menu.

did not test joining a game cause i'm at work and was doing everything remotely (have too much free time here :p), but i suppose it works.

hope this helps someone.

by Marian on Monday November 29th 2010, 2:44
I just tried it on wine 1.3.8 and bunch of others (1.1.42. 1.1.36. 1.2.1) It tries to complete instalation, but on 1% it shows incomplete instalation error (2), running left4dead2.exe manually shows intro videos, but then does the same. Installed corefonts with winetrick, fonts are not symlinks. Kubuntu 10.10

Incomplete Installation
by Kelytha on Thursday November 25th 2010, 10:46
I also had the incomplete installation error and found it to be related to fonts.

The fonts folder should not be a symlink, but real folder and should contain all core fonts.

So far the game works perfectly for me on Wine 1.3.7. Going to post a test result after a bit more playing.

Platinum?
by Brian on Sunday November 14th 2010, 18:08
I can't understand how so many people rate this as Plat. I've never been able to get this game to run under wine. I've been trying since about 1.1.29, and I just tried today with 1.3.7

If I install the game in windows (dual boot), then try to run it in Wine from linux (ubuntu 10.10) it shows the loading screen and then closes.

If I delete the .ncf files and re-install it from wine, whenever I try to launch I get an Incomplete Installation.

I've tried just about everything I've seen on this page and have never seen anything except those two outcomes.

Tabbing out.
by Steve on Saturday November 13th 2010, 10:37
It seems that any of the Source games (L4D2, TF2, Portal) don't like when you tab out. Any time you focus to another window, the game will not return to focus. Sound will still play, and the screen will stay on top of everything else, but it won't resize to fit the window. The game is unusable and needs to be closed with the System Manager.

Could this be a Compiz thing, perhaps?

OK, this has been annoying me the last hour or more.

I keep getting Incomplete Installation (2) or whatever it is.

I had it going once. I deleted the client.dll file and validated it and it worked fine, then it just went back to doing this and no matter how many times I try to delete the client.dll file and validate the files again, it just doesn't work.

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me as it seems most people are actually able to play it.

Is there a problem with Fedora?
by Connor on Friday October 22nd 2010, 19:02
I'm just wondering if its working for anyone running Fedora. I ask because I've tried the various things suggested on this page (with my usual .wine and a clean .wine), the wine versions that are supposed to work out of the box, and had no luck. So it occurs to me that there might, possibly, be *something* different either in the Wine packages or in Fedora itself that is somehow different. It'd be odd, I know, but I'm scratching my head here...

I'm using 32bit Fedora 13 with the PAE kernel.

Black screen foreva
by Loadus on Thursday October 14th 2010, 13:47
Are people actually playing this "out-of-the-box" with WINE 1.3.x? I mean install WINE, install steam, install Left 4 Dead 2 and then play? Just asking, because I am still getting just a black screen with the character names running around and items glowing + the character status textures showing at the bottom of the screen. So the game is totally unplayable for me - I would have to set the OffScreenRenderingMode to backbuffer, but then the performance goes to hell (lower than 10fps).

My card is nv GTX260 and I'm using the 260.19.06 drivers and running Kubuntu 10.10. Now with the new Kubuntu, the sounds are all messed up, because I can't use/install OSS anymore. :D

This is going really well for me, hehe.

A few issues with ATI
by Aldo on Monday October 11th 2010, 12:48
I am running Left 4 Dead 2 (Steam) on Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits with a ATI 4770 video card and Compiz on.

It is OK most of the time, but I have some issues:
* The audio of the intro seems to be surround, but only two channels are played. I say this because I can hear Coach's voice, but is very low and distant.
* I cannot play it full screen because it flickers a lot. In a window it is perfect. (Same with Half Life 2 Steam Demo)
* Depending on the effects' configuration, sun's glare can be seem through walls and other objects. (Same with Half Life 2 Steam Demo)
* The animation is choppy at first but soon becomes OK. It doesn't depend on the effects' configuration.

I'm a bit confused. Should I submit these bugs to bugzilla?

Recent Update Breaks L4D2?
by Josh on Friday August 27th 2010, 18:57
I haven't played L4D2 in a couple of weeks, and last night after installing some updates, it now crashes whenever entering a game (single or multiplayer). Sometimes, maybe 1 in 100 tries, I'll get into a game, but it'll run incredibly slowly and crash out. There's nothing in the console output that suggests what might be going on.

I've verified the local game cache, upgraded to Wine 1.3.1, and the newest nVidia drivers, created a fresh .wine prefix with only Steam and L4D2 installed, and found no improvements.

Has anybody else been having trouble since the 20th (that seems to be the biggest update since I last played)?

Crashes after movie and showing the loading screen
by renelou on Tuesday June 29th 2010, 10:55
L4D2 crashes then my screen resolution goes down so I had to change it back to its original setting.

From what I had read, I should be able to get past the movie and loading screen with the latest wine, 1.2-rc5. It is the first time I installed this game (was on sale last weekend) but I had used steam before for other games such as CS:Source.

Is there some other important configuration I am missing?

My machine is quite old though, C2D, 5GB ram, nvidia 8500GT but I'm planning to upgrade the card in a month when SC2 comes out.

After playing for a while sound will drop off. Used the last few editions of Wine and it's throughout. Sound from different areas will drop off but will never completely loose sound. Bullets hitting items will remain or bullets fired, zombies howling but I don't hear crucial things like the Tank Theme, a hoard approaching, or music for that matter. Its random and never returns till I reset the game but I can still always play unless it gets the "Steam cannon authenticate with the server," message.

I had one and a half days - 1 1/2 days - where the game ran fine. Perfectly well, without a hitch. Nothing done different (except for an upgrade in the UI), and I could up my graphics to fullscreen and everything. The game was great.

Today, however, I turn it on (bear in mind that I haven't restarted my computer/restarted Steam), and the game is up to it's old tricks. It's reasonably more playable, but still stuttering and lagging.

Does anybody know how I can trace what may or may not be different between the two events of playing?

Incomplete Installation (2) How?
by Paul Vreeland on Tuesday April 27th 2010, 12:27
I have tried many versions of wine from 1.1.33 up to 1.1.42 and 1.1.43

From what I have read, it seems like this issue is related to Steam and DRM trying to access the game in a specific location (C:) and/or in a specific way (NTFS).

I've tried setting Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 for Steam. I have also run the SteamService with /install /uninstall /repair and /forceinstall options with various Wine configurations.

"Incomplete installation of Left 4 Dead 2 (2)" is always the error.

Anything I can add/change to the game to make it play a bit better? i've even tried running it in the lowest resolution.

ATI Catalyst Users - try this option
by Matt Drew on Saturday March 27th 2010, 14:40
I have an ATI 4850, and I've been struggling for months with random crashes in L4D2, both in CrossOver and in straight Wine.

This morning I finished a full versus campaign and played survival for a couple of hours - all without crashing once, through multiple restarts of Steam and L4D2. I was researching fglrx options when I ran across someone who suggested to look at the output of aticonfig --help. In that output, there are several advanced settings documented. I started methodically working through them, one at a time, to see if they had any effect. The third one says this:

--sb, --signal-block={on|off}

Enable/disable signal blocking. Disable this option when debugging a multi-threaded OpenGL application.

Using that option (as root) caused the xorg.conf to be rewritten, and this options was added to the Driver Section:

Option "BlockSignalsOnLock" "off"

I had to restart X to enable that option. Playing with it enabled, I still get hiccups in-game - but they no longer hard-lock the entire system. I even had a series of three hiccups, and recovered after only a second or two. I have no idea what this option does, or why ATI would choose a default that can hard-lock the user's system. In any case, I'm now fully able to play, though performance is still an issue.

L4D2 Won't Load...
by Nick Kuncaitis on Wednesday February 3rd 2010, 19:15
Hello!

Process:
I installed the version of Wine that came in Ubuntu 9.10, and after installing Steam & L4D2, it was spitting out an error. I read on the forums that if I installed the latest version, it would go away.

I then proceed to uninstall, install 1.1.37, and installed & downloaded L4D2 again. This time it seemed to work, except after the, "Preparing to launch Left 4 Dead 2..." screen goes away, nothing happens. I have tried to Set Launch Options to -novid -lv, just to possibly put less of a weight on my hardware, but nothing loads...

My System:
OS=Ubuntu 9.10
Wine Version=1.1.37
CPU=Pentium 4, 2.8 GHZ
Video Card=GeForce 7800 GS
RAM=1 GB

It ran fine in XP, right before I installed Ubuntu. Wondering if anyone has any advice... That would be awesome!

Thanks
Nick

Works, but...
by DAJ on Thursday January 7th 2010, 10:09
I've got the game running perfectly fine here, just as good as Left 4 Dead (original). However, I get complete system lockups at absolutely random moments (I've played and had to restart my machine at least 40 times and have not noticed a pattern). Wine claims that due to being a user-level process, it should not be capable of hard-locking a machine, and thus pushes the blame to my graphics drivers (the notoriously buggy AMD Catalyst); however, I am able to run Linux-native games (Penumbra series, and Sauerbraten) for hours without problems. Not sure what to do here, other than wait it out for updates that may somehow fix this unknown problem. I've also played with the in-game settings, as well.

Any suggestions for debugging would be nice; /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/everything.log show nothing out of the ordinary.

Arch Linux -> Phenom II 940 (3.0GHz) -> 4GB RAM
Catalyst 9.12 -> ATI HD 4770

Can someone compare the performance of l4d2 on Linux and Windows with wine 1.1.34?
I don't have Windows and l4d2 is hardly playable with my machine (Core 2 Duo T7300 (2GHz), 4GB RAM, nvidia quaddro NVS140-M or GeForce 8400M), so I wonder if my machine is too slow or if wine is the bottleneck here.
I get about 15-20 fps at 800x600 with lowest graphics settings and multi-core rendering enabled.

Patch wine
by Berillions on Monday November 23rd 2009, 11:55
Hello,

I would like to know how to patch Wine.

Because it doesn't work for me.

1- I put steam_hack.diff in wine 1.1.33 source. (~/Desktop/wine-1.1.33)
2- i launch this command : patch -p0 < steam_hack.diff

I have this like result in my console :
can't find file to patch at input line 5
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
--------------------------
|diff --git a/dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c b/dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c
|index bbec56b..f25a6fb 100644
|--- a/dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c
|+++ b/dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c
--------------------------
File to patch:

3- So, in "File to patch" line, i write : /dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c.
And it doesn't work too.

File to patch: /dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c
/dlls/imagehlp/integrity.c: No such file or directory

Incomplete Installation of Left 4 Dead 2 (2)
by Vyacheslav Goltser on Saturday November 21st 2009, 23:35
Anyone getting the error mentioned in subject? Anyone have an idea on troubleshooting/fixing this?

I tried to manually run the executable, but it goes through the opening scenes, then crashes.

Crash when killing a Witch?
by Cody Goldberg on Friday November 20th 2009, 16:44
Is anyone else having this issue? Every time a Witch dies, the game crashes for me. Console output shows nothing.

Not working since the latest Steam update
by Luke Bratch on Thursday November 19th 2009, 15:20
Has anybody else found that this is broken again since the last Steam update? It now shows me an installation dialogue box which goes to 100%, then fails with error (53) - even when using the hack.

Yeah, it looks like there's something extremely odd going on with my Radeon 4850. Using "aticonfig --odgc", I started monitoring the %GPU usage and clock speed. If I fire up another game in Wine, the clock speed goes to max (625) and stays there, while %GPU usage is at a solid 50%. When I fire up L4D2, the clockspeed alternates between idle (500) and max (625), while %GPU usage is rarely more than zero, with occasional bumps to 14% or 20%. I'm not sure what this indicates, but it seems unlikely to be good, and might identify why performance is so poor in Wine.

I also turned on multi-core rendering, which was jittery but seemed to make the game more stable - I was able to play through the first portion of Dead Center before it crashed, which was about 3x further than I had ever gotten before.

I am able to play the game now, however it will randomly quit. Even if it doesn't I'm only able to run the program once. If I try to relaunch the game gives me the "Could not load library client" error message. If I verify the game files Steam says 2 files need to be updated, and if I let it update then the game works again. Once. And then the error occurs once more.

I tried running lsof during the update process and it seems these files are the culprits:
left4dead2/modelsounds.cache
left4dead2/bin/client.dll

I'm running Wine 1.1.33 with the ImageCertificate patch. Unfortunately I can't try the -lv switch as my version of the game is already censored.
