This was popular for a while among programmers, but more applications used 1.3.1 or earlier.

JRE 1.4.2 worked as designed with Gomez Peer, which invokes java.exe

Additional Comments

To get java.exe to work, I had to add an entry in Winecfg to run it in Windows NT 4.0 mode.

HOWTO
(for JVM 1.4.1 on an unknown version of Wine:)

Works, but you need to set Wine to emulate nt40 or win2k, otherwise you'll get Hotspot errors. If you want to use Swing pass the "-Dsun.java2d.noddraw" parameter to the JVM. A lot of warnings about guard stack pages are emitted, but don't appear to affect functioning of the applications.
