WARNING

ALERT - BACKGROUND DOWNLOADER

The patch for 3.3.x to 4.0.0 needs to be downloaded using the Background Downloader.

First ensure you run Launcher.exe from your WoW folder and you are fully up to date.

Update (22nd September): A small update (10-20MB) is needed for the Background Downloader to work. Run Launcher.exe from your WoW folder to get this update.

Then run BackgroundDownloader.exe by double clicking the exe in your WoW folder. (It may take a minute before it appears).

The patch process should then begin.

This is a big patch - 5.19GB

For me (in the UK) the patch is called - "WoW-3.3.x-to-4.0.0-patch-EU-stages-1-3"...

(Your downloader may download the patches separately or may combine all 3 stages together as it did with me).

NOTE -This will only download the patch so it is ready for installation when it is officially needed.

NOTE - Due to the large size of the patch it may take several hours. The Background Downloader works like a BitTorrent program so you can close it down and carry on where you left off at a later time. You can still play WoW while it is downloading.

HOWTO

Installing World of Warcraft in Wine

NOTE: It is HIGHLY recommended for ATI users to use the latest Catalyst package found at ati.amd.com. As of release 9.8, this fixes TONS of bugs.

NOTE: It is HIGHLY recommended that you have the latest stable wine version installed (currently - wine 1.2).
[Beta versions of wine are unstable. If you use a Beta version, check the test results above to see if it is reported as working with your Linux distribution].

Preliminary Steps:

NVIDIA/ATI: Make sure you have the proprietary driver for your video card installed, or WoW will not run. Once they are installed, check to see if Direct Rendering is enabled by typing the following code into Terminal :-

glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"

If it returns direct rendering:Yes, you're good to go!

Installing:

[ You can install World of Warcraft in wine through a variety of methods, such as using the CD or automatic downloader. If you wish, you may simply run it from a Windows partition, it's your choice ultimately. ]

To install using the downloader just run it with Wine and follow the steps. There are no major problems using the downloader. If you are using the downloader you can jump straight to the Configuring section.

Below are the instructions for installing from WoW Disks :-

To install from the CDs the files need to be copied over to your computer as attempting to install directly from disk will result in failure.

Create a folder in a convenient location such as on the desktop called wow_install

You will only need to install WoW using the Wrath of the Litch King disks. (The Wrath disks will install the WoW core game and the Burning Crusde as well).

Insert Disk 1 of the Wrath of the Litch King.

When you open the disk you will not be able to see all the files as they are hidden. To get them to show run the following code in Terminal :-

sudo mount -o remount,unhide /dev/sr0

If that code doesn't work try this one :-

sudo umount /dev/cdrom
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o ro,unhide /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0/

Then open the disk again and you should see all the files.

Open the disk and copy all the files to your wow_install folder.

Now insert Disk 2 of the Wrath of the Litch King and follow the same step above to unhide the files.

Copy only the Installer Tome #.mpq files to the wow_install folder. (# will be a number. Basically from Disk 2 copy only the Installer Tomes that have a number in their name (NOT the one without a number, we got that one from Disk 1)).

Once complete eject the disk and run the Installer.exe in the wow_install folder with wine. (Simply right click it and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader").

WoW will now install.

Once the installation is complete a shortcut will be on the desktop to run WoW. Of course you will have to go through the patching process.

Note: Some users report that the WoW launcher/updater may freeze during the patching process. If this happens to you, simply close it down (terminate the process) and then just start it again from the desktop shortcut or Launcher.exe. It will carry on from where it was before.

IMPORTANT - Make sure you go through the Configuring section below.

IMPORTANT - Linux distributions using pulseaudio (such as Ubuntu) will probably experience sound issues. See the"No sound with Pulse Audio" section in the Tweaks and Troubleshooting area below for a fix.

IMPORTANT - Launch WoW from the desktop shortcut or from the Launcher.exe rather than directly from WoW.exe. This is because the launcher will check for updates and will auto patch/update the game if necessary. If you launch WoW directly from the WoW.exe (such as in the "No sound with Pulse Audio" fix), then make sure you still launch the Launcher.exe from time to time just to check for updates, not to run the game.

NOTE - The latest patch (3.3.x to 4.0.0) requires the use of the Background Downloader. See the red Warning section below for instructions of how to successfully run the patch.

Configuring

The suggested way to run World of Warcraft in wine is using OpenGL. Although you lose hardware cursor functionality and shadow detail, you will often gain tons of FPS this way. Operation without the opengl flag is often unreliable and will not start with some cards. If you wish, you can install a hack for hardware cursor like functionality here.

Simply add the -opengl flag to the end of your WoW Launcher (recommended) :-

Open the WoW desktop shortcut and add -opengl to the end of the command (leaving a space). (Recommended method).(Recommended for first run after CD or download).

Alternatively, you can either edit your WTF/Config.wtf in your World of Warcraft directory to include :-

SET gxApi "opengl"

(Note that this file is only created after you have logged in once).

The game will now run. If you have any problems or issues please check the sections below for fixes or post a comment for help.

Tweaks and Troubleshooting

You should be good to go! If you are experiencing any other issues, read on.

Stuttering while walking

This is caused by a bug in the latest Xserver release. This should be fixed by the next round of distribution releases this fall. In the mean time, you can disable key repeat by going to System/Preferences/Keyboard in Gnome.

Sound issues

If you cannot get any sound at all, try deleting your .wine directory (backup needed files!).

No sound with ALSA

Launch Code :-

padsp wine /path/to/wow/WoW.exe -opengl

If you have sound stuttering in a distro using Pulseaudio (like Ubuntu), then you may have to fully uninstall Pulseaudio and use ALSA directly. Be warned however that you may loose some system sound capability (such as login music and error sounds). If you want PulseAudio back, then its easy to reinstall. Just follow your distro's instructions on their troubleshooting pages.

ATI issues

- Special effects used in quests such as "Maintaining the Sunwell Portal" as well as other quests in WOTLK that uses this "out of phase look", will not work without a special setting in the Config.wtf, scroll down!

- Turn OFF the desktop special effects if you experience poor performance.

Mouse cursor slow

This is because Blizzard has not implemented OpenGL hardware cursor functionality in the Windows version. However, there is a patch here that simulates a real hardware cursor.

Graphic corruption

Scroll down and try the registry tweak, if that does not work, reinstall the driver.

Corruption when doing "Maintaining the Sunwell Portal" and WOTLK 'flashback' Quests:

Add this to your config.wtf file:

White Minimap Indoors

AMD has fixed this problem with Catalyst 9.8. Cheers to AMD!

Game Flickers in Windowed mode and is unplayable:

Some older ATI cards have this problem when using advanced desktop effects such as Compiz Config or Beryl. It also tends to happen with the standard high-desktop effects built into Ubuntu. If you want to play this game in Windowed mode, set your desktop effects to "Basic".

Performance issues

Make SURE you have installed the latest ATI driver 9.1. This driver has fixed a few performance issues in game as well as added more options for the aticonfig command. Also, turning off Full Screen Glow helps.

Graphical and Icon corruption:

This tweak doesn't seem to be required as of Catalyst 9.8 - Andrew

Note that this used to be a tweak needed to boost FPS, but is apparently not needed anymore for non-ATI users.

Open the registry editor and navigate to the following key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\
Highlight the wine folder in the left hand pane by clicking left on it. The icon should change to an open folder
Right-click on the wine folder and select [NEW] then [KEY]
Replace the text New Key #1 with OpenGL
Right-click in the right hand pane and select [NEW] then [String Value]
Replace New Value #1 with DisabledExtensions (Notice it's case sensitive!)
Then double click anywhere on the line, a dialog box will open.
In the value field type GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object

Please note that after using this tweak, the icon pictures may misplace themselves. For example, the icon for "gold" will look like and icon for an orb.

NVIDIA issues

GLXBadDrawable

INTEL issues

Unfortunately, Intel does not make its own drivers for their cards for Linux. Their Windows drivers aren't even that good to start with.

For World of Warcraft to work properly, you need to look for an Open Source Intel Driver that gives you direct OpenGL rendering support.

There are no known Issues with Intel Cards, apart from bad FPS on certain drivers.

Other issues

Open Source Graphics Drivers:

If you have low frames with your Open Source drivers, then try the proprietary drivers for ATI and Nvidia. The Open Source Drivers have a lot of performance issues at the moment.

FPS stutter

Set farclip (the view distance slider) to 777 (about midway on the slider) ~ Thanks to Andrew

Bad FPS in general:

Please make sure that you are not suffering from high latency, as this will cause some FPS problems. If the small 'computer' icon shows you more than 600ms, or if it is red, then you are having high latency. Please check with your ISP.

If you play from Africa, you should not be experiencing more than 500ms to European servers. South Americans and Australians should not be having more than 400ms to the USA servers. Please check this and make sure that your connection is stable.

Mouse cursor jumps

"If I show the hide buttons on my Gnome panel and hide the panel before I start the game, then the mouse behaves normally. The hide button isn't visible in-game." ~ Thanks to NV

Please note that the mouse will not be perfectly smooth in OpenGL mode because Blizzard Entertainment does not support Hardware Cursor in OpenGL with the Windows version of the game. However, there is a patch available here

Hard Drive Thrashing

There is no solution yet. It seems it is a windows problem too when you are using more then 4GB RAM.

No fancy shadows available

This will not work until Blizzard add it for OpenGL (Windows version). ~ Thanks to Raphael Huerzeler Ema Jukka Tastula

Lags/Stuttering

Bad graphical corruption in certain areas

Find the following registry entry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\

Add a new key (type String) and name it 'OffscreenRenderingMode'

Double click the new key and add the value 'pbuffer'

Dalaran and/or other areas cause crashes

This is due to WoW running 32-bit (there is no 64-bit client) and trying to allocate more than roughly 4GB of memory for advanced textures. This is a bug in Wine, since wine, by default, reserves 4096MB (the maximum for 32bit systems) of virtual memory to mimic the win32 memory layout. WoW allocates progressively more memory for textures and this forces the display drivers (which are loaded in the same section of memory) to quit with an GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY error.

Dalaran is a good example of this. Dragonblight and Icecrown may also suffer from this bug.

A possible workaround includes trying is to force Linux to use less memory than what you have, or to make it think it has less memory (eg, limit it to 3GB). The preferred way to do this is to add the mem=3G (for 3GB) or mem=2G (For 2GB) flag to your kernel boot parameters.

How to do this can be found in your particular distro's documentation.

Some people have reported it to work, whilst for others it has not. You may need to sacrifice the advanced textures if you try this.

Linux kernel:

Please make sure that you keep your kernel up to date at ALL times! It seems that with each new release of the Linux kernel, the performance of games under Linux improves. This is probably because the kernel is beginning to handle heavy graphics and multimedia much better now.

Please remember to reinstall your video drivers after installation of a new kernel. Failure to do so may result in not being able to start the graphical user interface and/or prevent games from running.

Raiding

RAIDING:

Note: that the performance of raids can sometimes be attributed to the quality of your graphics card and its driver... plus various other aspects. If you experience trouble raiding on Linux, it is advised that you do so on Windows until your issues are fixed.

In General:

If you are using a graphics card with 128 MB of memory then you should set everyting to low when raiding, as this will consume less graphics memory.

If you are using a 32bit/64bit processor that is not faster than 1.5Ghz, then raiding will be difficult. Dual-core processors are recommended.

If you are using a graphics card with DDR1 memory, then do not expect the performance to be good at all, even with all the settings set to low. Recommend setting it to 800x600 rez if its a problem.

ATI Users: be sure that your desktop effects are set to BASIC, as this will consume less GPU speed which you cant afford to go to waste right now.

Those who use Ventrilo, your PTT is broken. Please go to the Ventrilo page in the WineAPP DB for more info.

DISABLE QUESTHELPER!!! This goes for all those who play WoW and not just the Linux people. Various other addons could cause drops in fps and freezes/disconnects. BE SURE THAT ALL YOUR ADDONS ARE UPDATED!

TANKING

Currently raiding as a TANK in end game raids, Naxx25, eoe25 os25 vualts25 no probs, i have no problems with sound or video in anyway i get no fps lag at all, all 10 mans and naxx25 have been cleared on ubuntu with no crashes, leveling, battle grounds, spells and arena are all working fine. Ubuntu 10.8 64bit wine 1.1.1, wow 3.0.8. Like i said i Main tank end game raids no problem at all, wish vent played just as nice. ^_^

DPS'ing (melee and ranged)

MELEE: I have DPS'ed with a feral druid in Naxx 25man, OS25man and Malygos 25 man, as well as all 10man instances. I have found Malygos impossible, but that is just my graphics card. I have also found the white minimap annoying. Other than that, I have not noticed anything out-of-the-ordinary related to WINE. Nvidia users should not be experiencing any problems.

RANGED: When respeccing to ranged in a 10man, I havent found anything wierd wrong. What I have noticed is that the clicking can be a bit strange at times. As I said, Nvidia users should not be having problems.

HEALING:

Healers need a very fast graphics card and have to be using an Nvidia or ATI graphics card.

HARDWARE RELATED:

NVIDIA: Make sure Vsync is disabled, unless the screen is tearing. If Vsync is enabled, disable tripple buffering.

AMD/INTEL dual/quad-core: May experience difficulties if WoW is only utilizing 1 of the cores.

Nvidia Sound System: May stutter with Pulseaudio. Kill pulsausio in the process manager.

Currently the only way to have a hardware cursor in OpenGL is using the patch here.

The new "OpenGL" option in the Launcher seems to be nothing more than an option that disables OpenGL in the config.wtf and enables Direct3d.

Pixel Buffers ATI:

The problematic pixel buffer support in fglrx has been fixed in version 9.8 of Catalyst. Upgrade your fglrx if you are still experiencing this problem.

Patch 3.0.9

The OpenGL option is clearly not available in the new Launcher. We are not sure if it is because it did not do what Blizzard intended or whether they are trying to send a message. However, there might be a good chance that there will be future OpenGL support for the Windows platform.

The bad software cursor has been fixed.

Please just keep posting on the Hardware Cursor request on the suggestion forums, because they have been rather quite lately. inform your friends and gain their support!

Logout Issues

As more mods are enabled there is a noticeable increase in the amount of time between the logout timer doing its final tick and actually being presented with the character selection screen. Lowering your addon count will fix this, the time seems to be directly proportional the the amount of ram used by mods.

Hence things like quest helper and atlas loot will cause up to 30-40 second delays, this is of course running with the -opengl argument.

Haven't tried with directX, haven't had it work properly, ever, this may just be me, feel free to try, in fact please... try. Investigation is under way, for now try use as few mods as possible and be patient, it may look like its frozen but I promise you WILL eventually see the logout screen. Also, after about 30 seconds pressing [escape] seems to help. But that may just be a placebo.

Error with non-existent files

Hello everyone.

I downloaded the latest Version of wine with Yast.
And I want to play WoW.

I have allready the file "World of Warcraft" and I start the programm with the command in the terminal:

wine "Z:/home/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe" -opengl

The programm starts, I can loggin and I see all my characters, but if I loggin with one, there comes an instant error, from WoW and also from wine.
I can't see in the Error reports of wine oder WoW, where is the problem.
But I've looked into the terminal, and there is this:

Well, I think, the error is really because of my Interface, so I've looked, what is wrong.
And I see: I haven't such files!
This files do not exist!

4.0.0 patch problems

The new patch that was released yesterday (October 12th) has broken WoW. The launcher starts up, but then locks up and I have to go kill it from the terminal. If I start WoW directly through Wow.exe, it will launch the game, but when I log in it tries to download another update (probably the updated tools), but then it crashes with:

ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0073:00732DE4

The instruction at "0x00732DE4" referenced memory at "0x0000012D".
The memory could not be "read".

This issue happens whether I tell wine to act as Windows XP or Windows 7, and the memory addresses are the same. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with Wine 1.3.4. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone get it fixed?

Error logging in after 4.0.1

I had no issues prior to this with wine version 1.3.4 and WoW. After today's patch, I'll get the "There was an error logging in. Please try later" message at the login screen after I put my name/password in. The only thing that fixes it (so I've found) is completely reinstalling WoW. Anyone else having this issue?

Data: slackware 12.2, kernel 2.6.27, wine 1.3.4

Or pretty soon after hearthing to Dalaran or any instance with a lot going on it. The screen goes completely blank though I can hear the disks spinning in the tower, no error screen or message given. I have a hunch it involves the bug referred to here: WoW allocates progressively more memory for textures and this forces the display drivers (which are loaded in the same section of memory) to quit with an GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY error.

Dalaran is a good example of this. Dragonblight and Icecrown may also suffer from this bug."

I read further about tweaking my linux kernel, but it seems a little over my head, and I can't figure out how to do it.

I run 10.04 Ubuntu (64bit), wine 1.3.4, Nvidia GeForce 7900. I've run WoW on this machine before beautifully but can't figure out how to make it do so again.

Low frame rate

I'm interested in knowing what frame rate people got. While the game runs fine, my frame rate is surprisingly low, about 13-14 FPS in a crowded area (about 60-80 people) in Dalaran, a good battle in Wintergrasp and it falls down to 3-4 FPS.
I had an AMD 9950 CPU, 6GB DDR2 RAM and Nvidia 7950GT which I really expected would be good enough, but with a frame rate of about 10 I decided to upgrade to AMD 965 CPU, 8GB DDR3 RAM and Nvidia GTX 460, just to discover that my FPS only increased with a whopping 4 frames per second.
I ran it through oprofile, and the top CPU hogging entries were:

Would be grateful if you could tell me your frame rate in similar conditions and hardware (primarily CPU and GFX).

Binding more than 5 mouse buttons tutorial

The World of Warcraft allows to bind only 5 mouse buttons.

This is serious limitation for a game where amount of actions that needs to be accessible very fast can reach up to 20.
Overbinding your keyboard handicaps AWSD movement (crucial for mage or hunter).
Clicking on icons is way to slow for PvP, and your speed is handicapped even more by lack of HW Cursor in OpenGL.

So I created simple tutorial how to bind high-number mouse buttons despite this limitation:

Not always disconnected from server

First I want to apologize to have not reported this earlier since it is a long standing problem and now I cannot longer triangulate the version of Wine that started to show the problem.

I have a unstable ADSL connection and I frequently lose the connection to WoW server (Telecom Italia, my ISP, keep saying that everything is fine and since it has the monopoly of the physical infrastructure, it is pointless to change ISP).

The problem is that, while usually I get "disconnected from server" when the Internet connection is down, some time I don't and I end up hanging around the game unable to interact with anything; further, I cannot logout or exit the game in the regular manner, but I have to kill the WoW process.

The problem is particularly annoying when I am either flying around (especially when using the taxi gryphon to cover long distances) or traveling in an area with few mobs, npc, and players, because I would not realize that I have lost the connection to server for several minutes (and when I log back in I find mysel waaaaay back compared to the point I reached when I realized I lost the connection).

Any idea about this issue?

but I couldn't get through the license key problem cuz Icouldn't click agree button. So I guess my final choice is to install 1.1.27.

Hi,I've implemented all the usual fixes, SET gxApi "OpenGL", fxGlow, M@UseShaders "0", etc and the OpenGL registry DisableExtensions tweak. I'm running WoW with an Intel Video card and just the text drops out when going inside. If I log in indoors the text doesn't drop out until I move often. The only relevant info online is and old tweak of turning off Double Buffering in windcfg which no longer is available in Wine 1.2. Any suggestions appreciated.

I had spent a fair amount to time getting WoW working in Ununtu 10.04 using wine 1.3.1. I was able to play for a good two hours. Then I needed to restart my system and since then, each time I try to log in to my account, it tells me it is connecting, but soon after, it will say 'You have been disconnected from the server.' This happens when I type in the correct or the incorrect password. I could find nothing similar to this in the forums here.

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm runing 2.6.35-15-generic kernel from Maverick on Lucid and I had to use gksudo to run Wow or it would crash with "Internal errors: Invalid parameters received".

Reason is that in Maverick kernel config they have enabled some options to gain more security. wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/Roadmap/KernelHardening#PTRACE%20Protection

You can fix this by changing /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope from 1 to 0.

echo 0 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope
or for permanent solution add line
sys.kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 0
to /etc/sysctl.conf or new file under /etc/sysctl.d/

This works atleast for me.

Error when downloading patch

I have Wow installed but I have been unable to run it yet. When I opened the launcher the first time it was downloading the latest patch and got to about 65% when it crashed and said it had encountered a serious error. I've since tried to run it again after restarting and now it only gets as far as 10% before that error occurs. It dosn't tell me anything about the error.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a fix?

The terminal output overruns the amount that terminal can actually show but this is the part that looks suspicious.

New Hardware Detected

This doesn't keep me from running, it's just annoying. When I launch wow, sometimes it starts up with no trouble, but sometimes it says "New hardware detected, restore defaults?" I don't know what causes it. Happens maybe 50% of the time.

Also, when I log in, sometimes wow just crashes right after I type my password and hit enter. The error windows are recursive and they don't go away, but I start it from a terminal so I just alt+tab and Ctrl+c to kill the whole thing, then restart and it's usually fine after that.

Using wine-1.2-245-g17bc7be, AMD Phenom 9850 Quad, Nvidia 9800 GTX.

Try windowed mode

I don't know if anyone else has tried yet, but it seems to work pretty good on my system. Blizzard posted on their tech support forums forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=21723843232&sid=1 and using wines d3d dlls ( not installing d3d9x using winetricks ) I can set it to good graphics and get some nice shadows and hardware cursor enabled and still run at really good fps, almost better than what I was getting in opengl mode, I'm curious to know if anyone else gets as good results as I am, just try it out

Unhandled error on login

Hi there,

The game crashes just after i click enter after entering my password for the game. It looks like it is a graphical issue, as it happened only sometimes on kernel 2.6.32, wine 1.2 and nvidia drivers 195.36.24
and unloading the nvidia module and loading it again solved the problem.

After upgrading kernel to 2.6.34, the error is always reproducible with same wine and new configuration and nvidia drivers 195.36.24 and 256.35 (latest)

I am running an AMD Athlon64 X2 3000GHz with an nvidia GeForce 8800GTS

The actual error is:

well I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 alpha2 and figured that I would try wow. it doesent work with the game crashes when I try to log in with a wine program error. I tried crossover games 8 and 9 and I get an error when i try to log in.

I may try to compile rc7 because rc5 is all that is avalable to 10.10 atm. Is there anything in wine tricks that I may need to install?

Sound issue after rc7.2

While the main issue (no sound) was fixed after the 2nd build of rc7 on Saturday (again, thanks for the speed on fixing that!), I have discovered another issue.

In prior releases, I noticed that if I happened to leave my WoW client on all day, the sound would stop after 6-7 hours (even just sitting at the login screen). A restart alleviated the issue.

With this current release, the sound now stops after 90-120 min. Again, a restart will alleviate the issue.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Logout Issue

I've had some issues here and there with logging out from my characters taking 3-5 minutes, sometimes lagging out and throwing me back to character login screen. I know it is an issue with addons and in particular I found the addon that butchers it up quite a bit, Recount, when it has a good amount of data, running one instance is enough, it takes forever to logout, but if I clear recounts data before logging out there is no issue at all. Is anyone else experiencing this?

The Ubuntu PPA appears to have another rc7 version now. I just updated to it and reverted winecfg back to Windows XP and the sound is now back to normal. Thanks to whomever fixed that so fast!

With rc6 (and previous) - sound was fine. I use Linux Mint 9 w/pulseaudio and had Alsa set in winecfg

After upgrading to rc7 - sound is now just buzzing/popping. I've tried using alsa and oss and both produce the same issue.

Finally I got WoW 3.5.5a working. The hard bit was to patch my kernel 2.6.34. Stefan fixed the patch & I made it to my local source tree.
Fixed the System32 dll, made it as native. And behold: Blizzard liked my "Windows" RealID & granted Nagrand Realm! Of cource the nVIDIA kernel module disapeared when patching the kernel, so I had to fix that too. Questions on that?

I have written a bash script that improves some aspects of WoW performance when running on linux via wine. It does all of the following:

*Loads folders containing frequently-written files into a RAMdisk (this improves performance when large numbers of file writes occur; usually during exit/logout). This can vastly reduce the time it takes to switch characters, as well as somewhat improve addon performance overall.
*Launches peripheral software (VOIP, addon updater, etc...)
*Automatically closes peripheral software and cleans RAMdisk when WoW exits.
*Natively supports:
**mangler (free, open-source, linux-native VOIP client that interfaces with ventrilo servers; requires speex codex)
**WUU (WoW UI Updater; free, python-based addon updater; interfaces with most addon hosting sites)
**nostromo_daemon (configuration and keymapping daemon for Nostromo Speedpad series gaming mini keyboards)
*User-configurable for alternatives to above software and nonstandard WoW install path/RAMdisk path
*Automagically configures your WoW folder to make use of a RAMdisk

USES A LOT OF RAM; IF YOU RUN A LARGE NUMBER OF ADDONS, YOUR RAMDISK MAY CONTAIN UPWARDS OF 1.5GB OF DATA!!!!

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO!!!:
*Set up a RAMdisk on your computer
**You must have a user-accessible RAMdisk already set up on your system. If you use a recent version of Ubuntu, this is already available at /dev/shm by default (and the script will use this path). Setting up a user-accessible RAMdisk requires root access and editing of your /etc/fstab file.

Launching WoW freezes entire PC

I play WoW on both my laptop and desktop machines, bot have ATi cards, and both run Kubuntu 10.04 with the latest version of WINE. I have an intermittent problem where launching WoW with the -d3d flag (must have hardware cursor and the game runs fine apart from this issue), occasionally before the login screen even displays in the window that opens, the entire machines just freezes. I have to do a hard reboot to get back into the game. This can even sometimes happen multiple times in a row. A lot fo the time it just works great and if it does load up properly all is fine thereafter until I have try and get back into the game later, and it may or may not freeze.

I have noticed no pattern. This can happen after PC has been on all day or after a night with the machine off; sometimes if I have been playing and have to restart the game it can happen, sometimes starting up for the first time. If anyone has any idea please feel free to comment and I will try any fix at this point.

Arch x64 bit solution for RealID login problem

how to setup wow working under arch linux x64.

install kernel-lts from Core and nvidia-lts-256 from AUR
edit boot menu to allow you to select the LTS kernel.

install bin32-wine 1.1.44-2 from AUR wine version very important as this version has the Starcraft 2 patch for real ID and without this version you are forced to use DirectX.

Once all the above is install and the boot menu is set restart system and select the new LTS arch linux then run game as normal.

PERFECTO :)

note: be nice to yourself and use yaourt to install packages from AUR it can save you having hours of headaches with this

Quite a few people have problems with the patch, but I am not sure if I face the same error or something more unique.
When logging in WoW downloads the patch, closes down to install it, but fails, saying something like "The application could not be started for some reason. Please close all applications and try again."

Is that is? A kernel downgrade would help?

There are currently two separate issues that causes crash while logging in with the new 3.3.5 patch.

1. Using Linux kernel version >= 2.6.33 together with wine version >= 1.1.44 will cause a crash. Downgrade one or the other to fix this.

2. Using opengl mode with wine builtin wldap32 also causes a crash. Install vcrun2005 or copy wldap32.dll into windows\system32, override wldap32 with "native, builtin" in winecfg

Everything was perfect on my laptop but crashed on my desktop.

So I went through a whole routine to figure out what was different.

Here is what I did to fix my desktop:

1) winetricks vcrun2005
2) winecfg, I had WoW have its own Windows version (under Applications) so I had to highlight it and then move to Libraries tab. msvcr80 has to be native, builtin.

That is all. Nothing to do with native LDAP or not. I don't even compile in support for LDAP and I doubt if I did it would change anything. My laptop uses opengl, my desktop d3d. Doesn't matter which I use.

And yes I'm using 3.3.5.

I have tested Catclysm Alpha/Beta client on a private Sandbox server, And when i patched the client i saw in the patch note that Cataclysm will include hardware cursor for opengl and i have tested it with the latest wine rc4.
I have also posted a new version of wow here on wine db. 4.0.0 but it hasnt show yet. it is being validated.

I just wanna to say that hardware cursor problem is fixed in opengl mode. finally i say. works very good. i have submitted a screenshot also, it is under validation also.

Thx for the support over the years. and thx to the wine team for an exelent work.

I updated something in Ubuntu and when I run Wow I now get the above error.

I then updated to the test release version of Wine 1.2-RC2 to see if that would fix the problem but it doesn't. Anyone have an idea what may be causing this please let me know.

It worked fine until I updated.

I have an issue, and I really don't know what to do. I've tried different distro and everything. Im on Xubuntu 10.04 now. My laptop is a G71. It opens ok. Will play good for about a minute and crash. New 1.2 RC1 and -d3d mode

Since I have installed the Wine 1.2 RC1 I now have full d3d capabilities. Problems before were related to texture/shadow mapping and caused graphics artifacts all over the screen while trying to play in d3d mode. Now those problems are gone, I can use the hardware cursor and my WoW gaming has now jumped to a totally new level.

My timing to switch 100% to a Linux desktop couldn't have been better :)

PS: A friend of mine running nVidia graphics has been able to fully utilise d3d with no problem for a few releases now. I am just happy that finally ATi cards are useable in d3d mode :D

Low framerates with WoW 3.3.3

i am trying to run wow 3.3.3 in ubuntu 10.04 32bit using wine 1.1.42. My problem is that i am getting extremely low framerates(16-18 fps max) while running wow using command wow.exe --opengl. the graphic settings are set on the higher side but stuff like antialiasing/anisotropic filtering are not enabled. in windows 7 i get good framerates(upto 60) using same settings. my hardware configuration is intel C2D T6600, 4 GB DDR3 and Nvidia Geforce 130M (512 MB graphic memory). has anyone faced such problems or have any possible solutions

mouse/camera issue

Hi there

I am having a bit of an issue in WoW under Wine 1.1.42 ... a week ago it was working fine and today I upgraded Ubuntu to 10.04 and now I am getting an odd behaviour with the mouse/camera. If I click either button of the mouse the camera flips instantly to looking straight up at the sky. Camera pans back down if I move but obviously this has a big impact on playing the game - I can't steer with the mouse or pan my view around.

Has anyone seen this or can make any suggestions as to where I might start to look for a solution to this?

I have a diabolical intel 945GM I have followed all existing guidelines concerning the configuration, of course I used SET gxApi "opengl" in the config and always returns the error # 132 at the beginning, I can put it in direct3d but using several configuration with performance low and buggy.

Interesting Facts:

Ubuntu 10.04

Ok so. I'm running ubuntu lucid. I have a Intel mobile chipset 4 and the game runs great. I normally run about 22-30 fps. Except, Underneath my character there is black. Best way i can explain it would be a tear on the ground with the circum. of a little less than a consecrate. Any Ideas. I'm figure it's cause it's intel or that i'm just a linux noob.

WOW crashes after start

Hello,

I have a diabolical intel 945GM I have followed all existing guidelines concerning the configuration, of course I used SET gxApi "opengl" in the config and always returns the error # 132 at the beginning, I can put it in direct3d but using several configuration with performance low and buggy.

Interesting Facts:

Ubuntu 9.10

$ Lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Severe decreasing FPS when I rotate! :(

I noticed very annoying bug since Wine 1.1.41. When I try to rotate in game, FPS decrease very much. When I launch Wine 1.1.36, FPS is normal. I had to logout in raid yesterday to launch Wine 1.1.36 because I couldn't raid good due to very low FPS in Wine 1.1.41.
Wine developers started to change something in DirectX since 1.1.41. They broke it, I'm sure.

Installing Wow

I know this may not be the answer you are looking for but I installed World of Warcraft over 4 years ago in Windows, copy the folder to my ext Hard drive and when in Linux just double click on wow.exe and play wow.

Its much more easy to install it in windows once then use that install in linux.

Cata beta opt in

Kk so for some people on battle.net there is now a beta opt in option. However this requires one to run a system scan. As far as i can tell this scan works, even though it might come out with the wrong details, for example now apparently i have a 9300 nvidia card not a 8400. Most amusingly my friend who uses Genuine Vista cannot run the program as i locks up and crashes. Wine ftw!

Fun bug with 1.1.41

Not seen this reported anywhere before. But I get a fun graphical glitch. If I page out of the game (using Ctrl-Alt-Left or -Right or whatever, to switch desktops), when I page back in, the window has shrunk by about 20% (even though it is "full screen" still, according to the game).

Fun. Only way to fix is to restart the game.

Can't get debug info, none seems to be coming out. Will try harder tomorrow.

Inconsistent crashes

I've had loads of trouble getting WoW patched to the current version using Wine 1.1.14.

I could start Wow.exe occasionally, but after downloading the next patch, I the game would crash during startup (usually just when the line "archive data\enGB\agreements.mpq opened" was output from wine). A reboot would sometimes do the trick.

I finally managed to get the actual game up and running. Created a character, and tried to enter a realm. Crash! I then tried to restart the game, but this time it would crash during startup at the agreements.mpq line.

Upgraded to wine 1.1.41. Rebooted. Started the game again, found my character, tried to enter the realm. Crash!

Restarting the game now crashes again at the agreements.mpq line. wine outputs the following line as the first:

"err:winediag:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo The Mesa OpenGL driver is using software rendering, most likely your OpenGL drivers haven't been installed correctly"

This error did not occur during the "successful" running of the game, so something weird is going on.

Another weird thing is a wine dialog that sometimes appears during the startup. It says "Hardware changed. Reload default settings?". Whenever I have clicked yes, the game crashes at the agreements.mpq line. Clicking no usually makes the game work (until I enter a realm). If the dialog doesn't appear, it always crashes at the agreements.mpq line.

I'm running an old Radeon X300 graphics card, and to my knowledge, the driver is completely standard open-source "radeon" driver (help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver).

Does anyone have an idea about what to do?

I FINALLY got WoW to install using the website downloader, but now I am having issues with downloading the patches. I get to 10% and receive the error message referring me to the website:
appdb.winehq.org and if my issue hasn't been solved to post. If not this error message then the downloader goes gray and I have to force close the program. I am a complete computer idiot, haha, and am probably missing something important here, so if some genius can point me in the right direction I would be eternally great-full.

Random X Server Crashes Since 3.3.3

Has anyone else had an issue which started with patch 3.3.3 where randomly while playing WoW, the X Server just stops working, and you get dropped to TTY1. Then shortly after X restarts and you get put back to the (in my case) Ubuntu log in screen?

WoW randomly crashes wenn tabbing between windows

I'm running WoW with Wine 1.1.40 and Kubuntu 9.10 in OpenGL-Mode. I usually turn of Compositing and key repeat when playing WoW.

When I tab between windows (usually WoW and Firefox), the game sometimes crashes with the message "WoW.exe has encountered a serious problem...." The problem seems to occure randomly. Sometimes I can switch windows 50 times without a single error message, other times it crashes 5 times in a hour.

The terminal error message is as following:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000018 at address 0x6916469e (thread 0009), starting debugger...

I already deleted my Cache and WTF folder, deactivated my addons and moved WoW from my Windows to my Linux partition. But nothing had any positive effect.

Please tell me if you need further information and thank you for your efforts!

Minimap fix on Intel

I'm running an Intel GM965/GL960 graphics card with Direct3D. Just thought I'd put this out there for anyone else who's having problems with the minimap not working properly when indoors or in capital cities.

In regedit, in the following folder:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D

Add a String "OffscreenRenderingMode"
Set the value equal to "backbuffer" (no quotes)

This made the minimap work right for me, so I thought I'd just put it on here for whoever might find it useful.

When I try to run WoW I get this error:

I am extremely new to the whole linux thing. i have installed ubuntu 9.10, wine 1.2 (version 1.1.31) and fully installed/patched wow to the latest 3.2 version but i am suffering extreme lag issues whenever i try to run wow.exe. I have tried all fixes i have read so far and i have even installed catalyst 10.2 for my ATI radeaon 9200 graphics card. Admittedly this is an old desktop but i am using it as my test bench before dual-booting my laptop with the aim to getting more FPS out of wow. can anyone suggest a way forward??please!! If you need anymore info you will need to give me the idiots guide cause i am that new to this OS

Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit, current kernel, nvidia 190.53 (also 32-bit) drivers, GeForce 9800GT. Wine 1.1.39, rebuilt with the keyboard-event patch to work around the x server sending bogus key release events, and -march=k8. (That last may be a bad idea, but I'm a sucker for shinies.)

* full screen glow, opengl: Looks fine, except I had a lot of crashes.
* full screen glow, directx: Only the top line and left column of pixels are visible, all the others are black.
* no full screen glow, directx: Looks fine. Might be a bit slower than opengl but other functionality improved. But no antialiasing available.

Any suggestions, clues? I actually have a radeon on order because I wanted to see whether the ATI drivers have improved, but I'm not strongly committed to switching, I just want to have a look.

I've got this strange graphics bug. All player characters, except for me, appear completely white (no textures whatsoever), except for things that are more separate from their actual bodies, like cloaks, hair, bulky shoulderpads, etc. Any idea at all what the deal is with this?

My lspci yields the following for my graphics:

Hello all,
My problem is fairly vague but at least reproduceable. I am running Ubuntu 9.10, GeForce card (something like a 6800) with driver version 190.42, Pentium 4 2.4 Gz. Ubuntu works fantastic, no problems.

The problem is Wow crashes at startup. I enter the wine command, I get a black screen, and then before I get any graphics the whole computer freezes and I need to do a hard restart (no response from mouse or keyboard, and processor light has gone off). This seems to happen using both d3d and OpenGL mode, although I have had some luck switching between the two (when one doesn't work, try the other). But, on the other hand, mostly is just doesn't work.

Any suggestions? I've tried error logging like this

WINEDEBUG=+reg wine Wow.exe -OpenGL > error.log

but nothing ever gets written to that file.

Thanks guys, just pointing me in a (possibly) right direction is good enough.

can run the "test sound" in winecfg, and it works, but no sound in game
no matter how I tinker with alsamixer etc

no matter how I config, or turn on/off keyboard repeat, there's no key
repeat in the game. Has dropped my dps by about 1/3 or more, and no sound makes it hard to hear things coming.

It worked until I updated to fedora 12 and the latest yum version of wine 1.1.36

xset -r doesn't work, and in the gnome keyboard, turning off repeat doesn't work either

is there perhaps a registry trick for this ?

Fix for sound

This fixed wow not getting sound via wine for me, so I thought I'd share it. I had to set the "Windows Version" from the default of Vista to XP, and then my wow had sound the next time I launched it. After that I tried a few of the OS versions, and it seems that only the Vista and 2008 settings don't work for me.
For reference this machine was a Dell Latitude laptop, with the HDA-Intel driver (snd_hda_intel).

To all those having trouble installing patch 3.3.2

This afternoon I attempted to run the patcher under wine. Everything downloaded properly, though as soon as I began to patch the game, the installer would crash.

I had to install the patch under windows and copy the entire game directory over into my wine drive.

Make sure you backup your WTF and Interface folders before you copy everything over if you want to retain your settings.

Stutter stepping characters / half speed running

This problem is caused by the "Enable keyboard repeat" option in kde/gnome.

In KDE4 you can disable this in the "Configure Desktop" or systemsettings application.

I found it really annoying to have this off all the time so for kde4 I wrote a wow launching script that turns it off only while running wow like so:

sed -i 's/KeyboardRepeating=true/KeyboardRepeating=false/' ~/.kde4/share/config/kcminputrc && kcminit
padsp wine /media/d/Program\ Files/World\ of\ Warcraft/Wow.exe -opengl
sed -i 's/KeyboardRepeating=false/KeyboardRepeating=true/' ~/.kde4/share/config/kcminputrc && kcminit

Adjust the path to your Wow.exe as needed.
Remove the padsp if you are not using pulseaudio.

I believe the same sort of scripts can be found for gnome by googling.

Intel GMA x4500

I've been trying to get WOW to run on my laptop with the Intel GMA x4500 and thought I'd post my results so far.

OpenGL mode causes a crash upon loading a character. Have been trying everything to get this to work and no luck

Direct3D mode does not crash but needs a few tweaks to be playable
-I had to set off screen renderer to backbuffer, which alleviates a stuttering when playing, I did this through winetricks, but I think there's a registry key to make it work (OffscreenRenderingMode=backbuffer)
-I had to disable the GLSL use by direct3d, again did this by using winetricks, but I'm sure there is another registry key

With all the settings down low, I can get 30-40 fps in Ironforge, however, there is a graphical glitch every 10-20 seconds. For me, this is a blip of the area map in the bottom left corner. Hopefully will find a solution soon, any hints would be appreciated :P

Ive recently tried to install wow on my laptop, im using ubuntu 9.10 and the latest version of wine. All i get when i run it is a black screen the sound and the mouse pointer.
When i run it in terminal i get:

What's your FPS in WoW 3.3 and what's is your computer specs?

I just wanted to check out if there is much different between hardware, so is there any good to get new cpu, graphic card and stuff to increase FPS in WoW.

Dalaran: 10-25 fps
10man raids(ICC): 10-40 fps
25man raids(ICC): 8-20 fps
Flying on world: 20-90fps

1680x1050 resolution and rest graphics on minium.

display corrupted unusably

I'm trying to test out WoW, never played it before. I got a sampler CD, installed WoW. It wanted to upgrade, that proceeded successfully (I think it's now giving me WoW 3.2, the Lich King).

But after the upgrades, it now starts up with the display completely corrupted. I took screen shots (full size 1.2MB at www.emerall.com/Wow.png or reduced 215KB at www.emerall.com/Wow-300.png)

The corrupted display only started after WoW pulled in the upgrades to 3.0, so I know the entry box in the middle is username/password. By trial and error I guess the button on the right is for video/audio configuration.

But basically it's unusable.

I'm using wine on Debian unstable. 2.6.32 linux kernel. The corrupted display occurs the same for both wine 1.0.1 and 1.1.32. My computer has both an integrated Intel graphics card and a discrete ATI radeonhd card. The corrupted display occurs for either card, with any of the intel, radeonhd (X.org) or fglrx (ATI proprietary) drivers. I'm using -opengl (SET gxAPI "OpenGL" in Config.wtf).

Can anyone identify what's wrong?

Cant find my WoW folder

Came back to linux after a year off of just running XP for the use of WoW, love the ubuntu with a passion... Now

Overcame numerous herdles so far, installed vent, found mangler (CHEER) removed vent yeah, had to manually install all updates for wow and yeah all good, now trying to log into the game get a black screen, trying to enable opengl but i cant find my wow folder for the life of me. tried the
sudo updatedb
locate Wow.exe

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks

I don't know why is WoW 3.3 in bronze rating. I didn't had any problems updateing, loging in, and playing it. I have sound even I have pulse installed. Frame rates are better then they ware 5 months ago. In Dalaren I had 5-15 fps, now it is at least 25fps (and now I play it on max details). :)

It used to be that WoW always ran way better for me in linux then in windoze, but as of recent (I am very very sad to report) it has been running better in windoze.

Multi core mode

since updating wine and wow my processor has been floored when I run WoW. anytime I try to process something outside of WoW the game chokes and chugs. It appears to be trying to use both my cores and had a hard time sharing. Is there a way to only allow WoW to run 1 core?

There are various issues with the updater. The main issue you will encounter is permissions changes on the WoW folder itself, just remember your linux 101!

With new 3.3.0 client it crashes in any time - it was at least twice when I switched from another desktop to desktop with WOW, it was on teleport from Dalaran to Darnassus, it was when selecting recipes from profession trainer and yet another time, cannot remember context. May be I had to run it in debug mode but I could not think it will be so often. :(
With previous versions I cannot remember if I had any crashes that just told me to write about it to this cite.

Open your bank , then walk back or ask a friend to start a trade , to force the closing of bank window : it crashes my client with an access violation (read error) , it's doing the same on my wife's system.

i downloaded the patch just fine, but when it writes in the patch it stops at 2%, and a text-less box appears with the options "Repair" and "Ok" at the bottom...and whenever i try to log in it goes to the updating screen and repeats the whole scenario
i have been using wow with wine for a while and this is a new one to me :P

I downloaded World of Warcraft last night using the InstallWoW.exe. It created a 'World of Warcraft.temp' folder. When it finished downloading, this folder and its contents was all I had. There was no ordinary 'World of Warcraft' folder in the c-drive. Everything in the folder had a .temp suffix too.

What can I do to fix this?

You actually do not need winetricks or any other hacks for the 3.3 to work. Install it like you would normally do, configure winecfg to your needs (actually it comes perfect as it is) and then download this patch from Microsoft: www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?familyId=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displayLang=en

Run it and it will install Visual C++ 2005 SP1. This will fix the login problem with some c++ manifest many people are having. Tested this on 4 different PCs before posting and all are working perfectly like this. BTW i do not know if this is right but if you are using winetricks then you will get less help from the devs than using the official wine version without modifications.

I was on 9.04 using wine 1.0.1 and decided to do the on-the-fly upgrade to 9.10... I did the wine tricks thing in all of those and still didnt have any luck. Upgraded to wine 1.1.32, still no luck.

I edited the manifest so it contained the correct version information and thats what fixed it for me.

I found this was trivially fixed by just copying over the Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest file from the WoW directory before it was patched. (Since you won't have this version of the file after patching, I placed it online for your convenience at dump.aphax.nl/files/wow/ - just do the right-click and save as thing, for some reason Firefox won't give a save dialog when I use the link directly).

Currently see bug #20643 with wine 1.1.34

Any time you run the launcher the permissions on the wow folder are set incorrectly. Just manually reset them immediately after you start the launcher and it works.

Process for patch would be

Start WoW.exe (you should be normally doing this now) it will download the updater then kick over to the patch download tool. then do the patch. As it relaunches the game after the patch it will go through the launcher. **BEFORE** hitting [Play] in the launcher fix the permissions on your Warcraft folder.

If you are starting the patch process from the launcher you might have a problem as it will mess up the permissions then kick over to the patcher.

I have patched to 3.3.0 successfully.

It looks like the final patch to 3.3 has broken WoW+Wine. I'm getting some interesting errors and the game won't progress past the login screen. It looks like they're shipping a new MS C runtime library.

When login is attempted (I know they're down at the minute but anyway) a little windows popup shows up saying:

An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.
Please contact the application's support for more information (Wine crashed on last line- think that's what it said)

So, it looks like they've shipped an updates MSVCRT library and wine is somehow barfing on it.

Fedora 12 problems

I upgraded to F12 last week and have had nothing but problems since then.
On F11 i was using wine 1.1.25 and nvidia 185.18.36. F12 includes 1.1.32, which makes WoW freeze when i alt-tab to another app on the same desktop in fullscreen mode. This has always worked fine before, and it goes away when reinstalling 1.1.25. Switching to another desktop and back makes WoW continue to run again, so it doesn't really lock up, it just doesn't update the screen anymore.
However, I'm not sure i can still use 1.1.25, cause I've been getting hard lockups since the upgrade (and my screen starts flashing a few seconds after the lockup) and i'm not sure if this is nvidia or wine related. It happened twice today (both within 1 minute after entering the WoW server), so i got fed up and decided to do some more testing. I was unable to reproduce the problem with UT2004 (played for 20 mins, no problems at all). Then i installed 1.1.32 again and haven't crashed since.
So... not sure if this is all wine related, it might be nvidia too, but i tried on 2 different drivers (190.xx and 195.xx) and they both have the same issue. I'm not sure 185.xx will still compile on this kernel though, so i haven't tried that yet.
Anyone else recognise any of this and have some thoughts on it? I just want my freezes to go away (either the hardware freezes on 1.1.25 or the temp freezes on 1.1.32), and don't care what version of wine or nvidia I'm running.

it's seem that the laucher (Launcher.exe) doesn't work. Just start WoW.exe in the World of Warcraft Trial directory (~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files).

Be patient and have a (very) strong Internet connection.

WoW on dual headed display setup with TwinView

If you are using a NVIDIA TwinView display setup (two screens, desktop spans over both, X screen resolution is e.g. 2560x1024 (2x 1280x1024)) WoW/wine starts in fullscreen mode on _one_ display, thinking it's on a 2560x1024 screen and will scale down to 1280x1024, changing the aspect ratio, so everything looks stretched and you have a black border on both sides.
If you don't want that, you can either
1. change to windowed mode and resize the WoW window to fit over both screens or
2. disable TwinView in your NVIDIA X settings, restart X, start WoW in full-screen mode at your native display resolution or
3. configure a virtual desktop (in winecfg) with a resolution lower than your native resolution. Otherwise you won't see the lower menu bar

Compose Key

My compose key used to work in wine, and wow, but doesn't any more.
It still works fine in X, by any of a number of means.
It would be very handy if it worked in wow nowadays with all the odd characters in names.
Does anyone know what i have to do to wine to get it working?

WoW doesnt start

It was about time after almost 1,5 years to fresh install Ubuntu. I also did some hardware upgrades. I opted for 9.10 64 bit. Right after the installation was finished I downloaded the latest ATI drivers and installed them....aticonfig --initial -f ...Reboot. glxinfo | grep rendering shows a big fat YES. Next step was to add the wine ppa. Next thing in line sudo apt-get clean...and all the rest of it. Wine installed. First run of wine configuration also done...

since I played WoW on my previous Ubuntu installation I already have:

SET gxAPI "OpenGL"

in my Config.wtf

However....

wine WoW.exe

results in:

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 236
Current serial number in output stream: 236

Nothing else done on my Ubuntu installation other than described above. Anyone have an idea what that could be?

World of Warcraft Client Patch 3.2.2a

There seems to be a problem with the launcher in the latest 3.2.2a patch. Every time the launcher is started, it changes the permissions on the Game folder to disallow read and write access to the folder's owner. I have to reset permissions, and start wow from wow.exe, not the launcher. Does this problem occur in windows or is this only happening in wine?

Running WoW gives display error

After a successful installation under Fedora 11 using Wine version 1.1.32 of WoW 3.2 from a downloaded client, running WoW.exe doesn't work. As I am using a 64 bit AMD processor (and 64 bit Fedora), i used wine32. I am quite sure that the video driver is installed correctly and has hardware-rendering and glxinfo confirms this (Direct Rendering: Yes). Also, I can play Linux games that need direct rendering.

However, WoW will not run:

Possible new tweak?

I recently stumbled upon interesting tweak, for Morrowind, which also improved performance in WoW (from ~20 to ~35 and up FPS on lowest settings for me) and I was wondering if anyone can confirm this.

What I did was I changed the registry accordingly:
(right click new string value call it whats in the first "" and then double click that new string value and change it to what's in the second "")
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="pbuffer"
"RenderTargetLockMode"="textex"
"UseGLSL"="enabled"
"VideoMemorySize"="512" //change this to your video ram size mine is 512

Why I need this confirmed is:
1. It sayd Direct3D and I use OpenGL and I don't see why it would affect it.
2. I recently had magnitude of updates and I'm on Mandriva Cooker 2010.1 and perhaps there was something in those updates.

It actually does run but it is very slow with d3d.

Shiny new problems on Karmic (ubuntu 9.10)?

Using the Jaunty apt source from BudgetDedicated, WoW blows up instantly when I try to start it:

err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7ec00a06

This hardware was running wine okay under Jaunty. I can't find anything relevant googling around. Have current (190.42, same as I had before) nVidia drivers. I'm assuming it's karmic-specific, but I haven't found anything yet. WoW then sits around consuming 100% CPU without doing anything.

For those interested, I managed to get WoW working with the open source ATI drivers (x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati 6.12.4) in Gentoo with good preformance. I switched to the Open source driver when ATI discontinued support for their older chipsets. To get the game working, you must set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\OpenGL -> DisabledExtensions to "GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object;GL_ARB_vertex_program" or you will have bad graphical corruption. Also make SURE you are using the latest version of x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati as older versions have very poor preformance. My video card is "ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]"(64MB). I get good preformance in the old world (kalimdor and eastern kingdoms @ 35-60 fps), and the game is "playable"(18-30 fps) for questing and 5 man dungeons in outland and northrend(I even get nearly 10 fps in dalaran during high traffic hours!). I have not tried any raiding with the open source driver, as my video card is not really good enough for it. I have uploaded a screenshot which will hopefully show up soon. The game works in both fullscreen and windowed modes, I am currently running at 800x600 in a window with most game settings turned pretty far down(this card never preformed very well at high resolutions even with the fglrx driver) I have very few problems with this driver (excepting the white minimap indoors), and would suggest trying it if you have an older r200 or r300 chip, as gentoo has masked fglrx versions that work with these older chips.

im trying a lot of things to correct my fps issue (another topic below)
im in the way to install the latest drivers from nvidia (dont know why ubuntu take so long) so first i remove the ones i had been using.
it cross my mind if wow could run without the property graphics drivers from nvidia, if so how good?
well the answer is, it could get to the login screen at like 1 frame every 5 seconds an the cpu at 100%, dont try to enter the world... wait give a second i will try now, enter the username and password was hard, it takes a 5 seconds delay, i can chose the character but a black screen after that
the oddly part is that i put "glxinfo | grep rendering" in a console and i get a "direct rendering: Yes"
it should say NO, dont you think?

how much video memory u have?
i have same issue sometimes when switching zones, fps drops heavily, so i look on the ground like 5 sec and then its gone..
also same happens on windows, i bet its the old G80 chip bug, i hae 8800GTS with 320MB memory

FPS drop a lot after a 60-120 seconds of play

I dont know if it is normal, or if anyone had experience this?
After 60 or a little more seconds of playing my FPS drop from 66-77 to 22-24, the difference is visible in low resolutions,but still playable. on the other side, if put the highest resolution the game go from enjoyable to not playable in a matter of 60+ seconds.
I dont know nothing about drivers or wine, but maybe some buffer is not handling well, and start filling up after a few seconds, lol, you are good to smile, i just dont know what im talking about.
i use ubuntu 9.04 32-bit, nvidia drivers from ubuntu 180, wine 1.29

Is anyone else having problems with the patch today?

Firstly, the actual download would just hang and not actually start the download. So I grabbed the patch from a filesharing site.

Then, I ran the downloader (WoW-3.2.0.10314-to-3.2.2.10482-enGB-downloader.exe) and that scanned the downloaded patch, got to 100% and then just hung again.

The console output ended like this:

Well, I searched for help, but nobody can help me, the bug only happens to me.

I hope that anybody can help me. TryWoW.exe (the demo of WoW) crashes, so even I can install the game.

There is some screenshots below that explain my problem.

My system:

Intel Dual Core 2.2 Ghz.
1 GB RAM.
Graphic card Nvidia 8800.
Ubuntu 9.04. Kernel 2.6.
Lastest nvidia drivers installed and working.
Wine 1.29.

Before, I ran WoW very nice. But now cannot.

Please, help.

WoW crash

Hi

In game I was unable to Glyph my secondary spec so I deleted the Cache and WTF folders... as per the Help section :(

Now I cannot get them remade as the thing crashes I guess this is due to no OpenGl setting but as I can't login I don't have the file to modify...

I am using nVidia 8600 with the 180.x drivers on Linux Mint and Wine 1.01 (I was using 1.29 and downgraded using Synaptic in case that was an issue)

More Info...

At first it would just switch to an 800X640 resolution then crash with an unable to access memory error... I then unticked "Full Screen"
in Options on the launcher which allowed the WotLK cinema to run... but then it crashes straight after that...

The Folders Cache and WTF have been remade in my WoW folder but WTF is empty (as expected cause I can't log in) Cache has a WDB Folder in it which in turn has two Folders enUS and enUSxxxx these are empty...
I ran a repair from Blizzard to see if it would do anything and maybe it created these...

Any thoughts as to what may be the issue would be appreciated...

I have been running WoW under wine for a couple of years now without any (to me disturbing) problems. After the latest patch I have run into some very anoying problems (or rather one problem multiple times);

I experience the "Dalaran type" crashes several other ppl report, however after multiple such crashes my GPU has actually died. This has happened 3 times, twice on two different GeForce 9800 GTX+ cards and once on a GeForce 9800 GTX card on 2 different computers. The graphics cards have been replaced (waranty) but after the second replaced 9800 card crashed (always directly after a WotLK crash) and was replaced, I have been loth to run WoW.

I have not found any other posts that would indicate that this has happened to others so I would be very interested in knowing if others have experienced this.
Anyone with ideas as to why this may have happened? The cards do not appear to run excessively hot (68-72C).
Runing WoW under windoze does not (so far) seem to affect the cards.

I will test run WoW on the new replacement 8800 card under wine to see if the same thing happens again, but would like to have someone give me some hints as to what to try in order to find out what may be happening. Else if the card dies it will have been sacrificed for no good.

Well, i'm a little disappointed with this version of wine. Last year I ran WoW with 1.11 and it worked fine. But, for sure, it must have a bug in this version (i believe).

When I run TryWow.exe (the trial version of WoW, downloadable from Blizzard page) appears several messagebox without any message, then, when finished the update, Wine crashes.

Although can sound incredible, CrossOver Games demo also crashes and shows the same errors.

Frequent Disconnect

I'm running the latest version of WotLK client and the latest stable release of WINE. Reducing graphics settings and switching between OpenGL and DX doesn't seem to keep me from getting periodically disconnected. This does not occur when I run the game off my Windows partition.

This is particularly game-breaking because the disconnect is not graceful. I am free to roam around while the client doesn't know about the disconnect. Moreover, I have to forcibly kill the client as it will attempt to notify the server of my exit. Logging back in has at least a few minutes' delay.

On a side-note: The full screen glow effect does not work in DX mode.

Crashes, causes Ubuntu Logout.

I went from 1.1.26 to 1.1.28 yesterday. No changes in my WoW startup that's always worked fine. Now my wow freezes on startup half the time. When I get it to work, and I close wow when done, it causes Ubuntu to autologout. Been at it for hours, any help would be appreciated!

I was getting quite frustrated as a first time Linux user trying to get everything going. After sticking with it I got the game all installed but I kept getting error #132 crashes. Tried blizzards website which was of no help as far as specifics go because it's a general error. Turning off Allow Pixel Shader (If supported by hardware) off fixed this problem. I'm not sure if something else was related I am running a Nvidia 8600gt video card so I'm sure my hardware supports it.

Almost Perfect, FPS issue

The game runs great, but it regularly reduces its framerate down to 1fps, and the only way to fix this is a restart. It does it no matter where I am, but it seems to happen faster in Shattrath (I do not yet have WotLK). The framerate is typically 50+ FPS, even in Shat.

Slackware 12.2, WINE 1.1.28, NVIDIA drivers are about 174, I think.

Intel and WoW

Hey there,

I have already successfully installed wow and the cursor mod on my laptop and am now attempting to do it for a friend of mine. On my laptop i run an nvidia card and had no problems installing wow or the cursor patch.

On this second computer however, it has a Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset. The problem is that the display is extremely buggy when i get into wow and the cursor does not show up at all. I've tried rolling back my driver and didn't see any change after doing so.

glxinfo | grep render returns the following.

Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset 20090326 2009Q1 RC2 x86/MMX/SSE2

I'm going to keep toying with it but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I made a executable shortcut on my Desktop called "Wow.sh" with this in it:
aoss wine "/media/Media/World of Warcraft/Wow.exe" -opengl

very low fps

i have taken the game ready and working from my windows installation, and i haven't changed anything except updating addons. when i run it, even with the lowest settings available, like all sliders to the left and every effect deactivated, the image is still choppy. my gfx card is a 8600gts and i think that it shouldnt be a problem of the gfx card in any case, i think it is strong enough for this game. i mean it worked better in the past with an even weaker gfx card, it doesn't make sense now for it to not work well :/// also, either switching to opengl does nothing good, or i am doing something wrong. i mean, i tried to switch to opengl, and what happened is that a 4x antialiasing option got activated in my resolution dropdown menu, lowering my fps further(and disabling it didnt help the fps either), and after switching to opengl mode i couldn't alt-tab anymore :/

I have a fresh install of LinuxMint 7 (23bit Gnome) and the latest NVidia driver (180). I installed Wine 1.1.28 and was able to successfully install WoW including patching to 3.2.x. The WoW Launcher comes up okay, but when I click "Play" it resizes my display and then crashes. I downgraded to Wine 1.1.27 since I read that there were some regressions with 1.1.28, but the behavior didn't change.

OK, Here is my story. I followed this tutorial, checked the graphics driver, no prob. Installed 1.1.23 as tutorial recommended. After figuring out how to unhide the dvd mount, it installed fine. Here is my interesting problem. The directory I chose to install was the normal c/prog/world of war/. I started the install and walked away for an hour. I come back and its installed no prob. To verify it installed i check the .wine/c_drive/Program_Files/....and there is no World of Warcraft directory....SO i cant find the WoW.exe HOWEVER, when I autorun from the DvD, WoW.exe starts and continues to update like its installed fine. Where is this mysteriously installed if not in /home/.wine/c_drive....etc

Found this page on core selection for WoW. Don't know if it helps with the whole 1 core problem. Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge than I could check it out.

Patch 3.2.0 fails to install!

I've download the client (3.0.1.8874) and it was installed ok. Wow started to download patch 3.2.0, the process went ok too. Then the installer opened a dialog and the computer froze at 70% of the instalation. I've restarted the computer, clicked repair in wow and it said it was all ok. So I've clicked the patch again and this time it didn't lockup, but I got message box again at 70% saying "the update could not be applied. The file "C:\Games\Wow\WoW-3.2.0-enUS-patch.exe" appears to be corrupt. You may need to download this file again.". So I did. I've download the patch directly from a web site, but Ive got the same result with this file again. I've read in the Blizzard's forunms this 70% mark is when the installer starts to copy things. And I also read ppl are having this problem in windows when the program could not get writing rights.Thers another hint I'm trying now, that some guy updated the client to 3.0.3 and then applied the big 1.2 gb patch. Let's hope for the best.

Black screen with WoW cursor

I installed brand new Ubuntu then brand new Wine, downloaded WoW and it installed without so much as a hiccup. Go to fire up WoW and it runs through the intro cinematic, then where the normal "accept these terms" screens should be just show as a black screen with the WoW gauntlet cursor. I've tried changing settings in my config file but no luck. Any ideas anyone? Thanks a ton!

cannot install WoW

hey guys, Luuka here. I just recently updated to version 1.1.27 of Wine on Suse 11/1, KDE 4.3. I'm having a great issue even trying to install the damn game. I keep getting cannot install terrain.mpq files, which stops the whole installation. I tried the online installer and the CD installer, same trouble.

What could I be doing wrong? I would be so happy to have an issue other than that, but I can't even install the game, much less than play it! Some help would be appreciated.

Sorry WINE, Not Quite Good Enough

Well I been happy with games like Sim City 4 and UT2004, but when it comes to WoW, WINE doesn't quite cut it. The game runs much slower then on windows and I am unable to use certain graphics features, the water and fog also look really bad and the textures won't go up to their highest resolution. I have tried several tweaks like the hardware curser and the firegl drivers, but that only solves about 1/10th of the problems.

Because this is my most played game, I am going back to windows as my main os, linux is remarkable software, it is more stable, but because of this one game, I cannot stay on it, sorry guys, I am still locked in microsoft's corperate hold, I am a big gamer and linux isnt much on gaming, even with wine.

Render Errors in OGL and Flipped Screen in D3D

Hi,

i cannot get it to work. When starting with option "-opengl", i get render errors like "spikes", flashing textures, missing objects and no mouse cursor.

When using Direct3D, the rendering looks good but the whole scene is flipped by 180 degrees.

Any ideas what to do?

Wine: 1.1.27 (from Scott Ritchie's Repository), also tried latest stable version
Linux: Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04
Fglrx: Catalyst 9.5

I sometimes get wow to crash. Dont really know if it depends on wow or wine but i get this error before I start submitting things to blizzard:

In the error which is sent to blizzard it mention diffrent mounts/weapons/iteams so i seems to me that my wow crashes since these things are to close to my char. and cant be displayed and therfor my wow crashes. But Im only guessing.

If I delete the cache files in Cache/WDB using the repair tool, there is a noticably long delay just after the loading screen disappears and the game comes up, in which everything is frozen, often with my character half faded-in as the freeze happens as everything is "appearing".

err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x5979a24 "?" wait timed out in thread 0028, blocked by 0040, retrying (60 sec)

The above appears in the console. Then after a few more seconds the game continues to load and everything works fine. Starting the game when it already has cache files created does not causes this delay, however before 3.2 I never had this problem even when I deleted the cache. Can anyone confirm if this happens in Windows, or if its a wine-only problem (albeit a minor one).

Works more or less the same as 3.1 for me, which is to say pretty well. Most video settings maxed, running with vsync enabled, so capped at 60FPS.
40-60FPS outdoors, 15-25 in crowded areas of Dalaran. Sometimes dips to less than 15FPS in 25 man raids during battles, but certainly playable.
Why does the game frequently get downrated based on the individual's hardware performance, which has nothing to do with WINE?

Problems with 3.2

Many problems regarding crashes of the game, lag, fps drop and others are not the fault of wine but the fault of the 3.2 patch which Blizzard already mentions in the information box when you login or in several places in the official forums.

This problems should not be pointed to Wine's Fault but to the 3.2 problems that came with it. Blizzard is working hard on this to fix several problems like the ones mention in this page.
