Additional Comments
The game will not even run with official Wine source, but if you patch the source with the TEXP70 patch from bug #16328 and install xliveless, the game will run but has some minor problems. For instance the frame rate is poor unless you use really low settings (i.e. disable shadows, low texure quality, detail and view distance set to 20) On Windows Vista SP2, I get a good framerate with the settings almost maxed out. The glitches seem to be gone in this version but I didn't play the game too long and only drove around for a little bit.
The online release date check in the installer still freezes at 30% but the offline installer from the GTA4 website works fine.
I tested this game on an nVidia GeForce 9600GT with driver version 195.36.24 with an AMD Phenom X4 2.6GHz CPU and 4GB RAM.
Wine 1.3.5 seems to have fixed some of the performance issues and possibly the glitches, but occasionally I will get a console message "fixme:d3d:buffer PreLoad Too many full buffer conversions, stopping converting" which may explain the low framerate on higher settings.
Games for Windows - LIVE does not work under Wine. GFWL components will crash any game that use the service. The only thing to do about it is to cut XLive out using XLiveLess Patch.
XLive is out and the game launch is unobstructed. Please note that from now on the online play via GFWL is disabled so as to prevent cheating.

Install fails
by mushryton on Saturday October 30th 2010, 12:19
After installing the actually GTA IV, the final process of the installation is to check the update or something online. But it always stops at 30% so I can never complete the installation.
How do I solve this problem?
Can someone please help me!?
Can't patch it
by Nikolay Iliev on Wednesday May 19th 2010, 8:07
I installed it using PlayOnLinux, I copied the Razor 1911 crack in the directory. I started Launcher, but I got a screen Razor 1911 and a an error of the launcher, after that an wine error and everything stops. When I try to patch I got the same errors. Where is my mistake?
Crash after logos
by Old Lodge Skins on Tuesday April 6th 2010, 4:09
Hi all,
I *think* I've done everything as I was supposed to: I installed GTA4 in a brand new wine directory, used a patched 1.1.41 version of Wine, updated the game and applied the required... Fixes.
The game starts, gta4browser crashes (I understand it should not prevent the game from running), I see the logos, "R" twice then in big "Grand theft auto 4" and then when I should finally see the menu (I think) the game crashes with this:
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_load_ds_location No up to date depth stencil location
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_LoadKeyboardLayout L"0", 0002: stub!
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_MapVirtualKeyEx keyboard layout (nil) is not supported
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_LoadKeyboardLayout L"0", 0002: stub!
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_MapVirtualKeyEx keyboard layout (nil) is not supported
(... and lots of these)
fixme:wininet:InternetCheckConnectionW
err:wininet:NETCON_secure_connect SSL_connect failed: 12157
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xa1641374 at address 0xa1641374 (thread 001f), starting debugger...
The 1st line was already there before the crash (along with others before it). The 1st "keyboard" line appears right when the game crashes and I then get a nice window saying "GTAIV.exe provoked and error" (I'm roughly translating, my system's in French, the game too).
In my previous attempts I tried to get d3dx9 and d3dx10 from Winetricks as someone here did, with no luck. Right now it's a clean install I've done just the minimum required as said above.
Does anyone have any idea of what might be happening?
