Additional Comments

I recommend you install PlayOnLinux as it is a nice wine frontend and makes it easier to carry the steps to get the game working nicely.

You can find the modified .txt and .reg files and the needed .dll here:
http://www.ziddu.com/downloadlink/8101133/EU3-HT-Linux-files.rar

Let me make one thing clear. Older versions of wine needed a lot more fiddling and tweaking to get EU3 working but this is no longer the case. Just follow the steps here on a clean wine 1.1.36 installation.

1)
First run the installers:
Install EU3 first, do not install dotnet when asked
then Napoleon Ambition expansion
then In Nomine expansion
then In Nomine patch 3.2 (may be this step is not required)
finally Heir to the throne

2) Copy d3dxof.dll to your wine windows/system32 directory

3) Run winecfg and set library overwrite
d3dxof = native
and set MaxShadowSize to 0 in the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\DirectSound

OR

run regedit and import d3dxof.reg and maxshadow.reg (contained i

4) overwrite the files terrain_2_0.fx and borders_2_0.fx in:
your Europa\ Universalis\ III/gfx/FX/

OR
edit the same files and
replace the lines that start with:
float4 TerraIncognita =
with
float4 TerraIncognita = float4(0,0,0,0);

"Fix" for no background music
by Daniel Fellin on Sunday August 14th 2011, 17:18
I created a little "fix" (^^) for having no background music in the form of a bash script that I use to start up the game. Using Ubuntu 10.10:

#! /bin/bash
cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Paradox\ Interactive/Europa\ Universalis\ III/
rhythmbox | rhythmbox-client --enqueue music/* --play
wine eu3game.exe

magna mundi and MEIOU maps
by Art on Monday August 2nd 2010, 4:13
Actually magna mundi and MEIOU maps need to have the same text files edited as per my original posting (2 lines, one in each text file if my memory doesn't fail me)

Then it works fine and I insist the terra incognita remains incognita.

what works and what doesn't
by Art on Monday August 2nd 2010, 4:01
Strange your test results, I have EUIII running and I do NOT see the terra incognita.

The only things not working are:

a) Background music
b) The game crashes on exit

The Magna mundi and MEIOU mods work perfectly fine.

game crashes at "loading graphics"
by Miloš Rašić on Wednesday May 26th 2010, 17:13
I followed all the steps, although there was no DirectSound entry in the registry and I had to create it myself.

The game starts well with eu3games.exe but it crashes at "loading graphics" screen.

Any ideas? Wine is version 1.2-rc1, EU3:HttT is patched with 4.1 beta patch form 27.02.

I followed the instructions
by Zachariahskylab on Thursday April 8th 2010, 21:07
I followed the instructions step by step, (I didn't use the launcher but the eu3game.exe that is recommended and when I try to start it I still get an error message and it takes a long time to quit- I usually have to shut it down from systems monitor.

I played this game on this computer quite a bit when I had windows installed. Now that I have linux I can no longer play it. Very frustrating. Is there anything else I could be missing? Resolution... various settings?

Sound does in fact work
by Zachary Stewart on Sunday December 27th 2009, 12:01
I said in my review that the sound does not work. This was a mistake on my part. With a registry change, it is possible to have the sound work. The music will not play, though. I have just now tested a mod with the launcher and that works perfectly.
