Description

Rosetta Stone is interactive language learning software that teaches a new language by immersion, rather than translation and memorization drills.

A completely immersive environment.

As a child, you learned to speak instinctively by experiencing the world around you. Our solution recreates this experience through a fully immersive environment right on your computer.

No translation or memorization.

We’ve eliminated the traditional approach of using translation and grammar rules, empowering you to think in your new language. There are no flash cards, dictionaries or memorization drills.

A carefully designed sequence of activities.

By surrounding you with words, images and the voices of native speakers, our method lets you progress naturally from words and phrases to sentences and conversations.

Microphone in Rosetta Stone
by jarrod bagwell on Monday November 12th 2012, 22:59
Microphone seems to be broken again as of wine 1.5.17 Microphone detects fine in Linux Mint 13, detects and sets up fine in Skype 4.0, but cannot be seen in Rosetta Stone's microphone list.

Rosetta Stone does not find the language CD or mounted .iso
by Neyzan on Saturday March 10th 2012, 16:26
I am using Wine 1.4 in Fedora 16 and 1.3.38 in Linux Mint 12 (both with Gnome DE), on a netbook and laptop respectively, and I have a problem with Rosetta Stone 3.4.5. Although it is installed correctly I can't get it to recognise the language CD. Whatever I try I always get the message that it couldn't find the language CD. You can see here a previous discussion I had about the issue: www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-laptop-and-netbook-25/not-able-to-make-wine-recognise-the-dvd-drive-932347/
Can anyone help me with this problem?

Blank screen
by Jared on Thursday December 2nd 2010, 19:42
I've got a problem with Rosetta. I started the program one day and could select a user, but the language level select screen was blank.
I tried several different fixes, re-installed Rosetta Stone, re-installed wine. Tried several different versions of Wine from 1.1 to 1.3.8. Still the same problem.

I've read that deleting the tracking.db3 file could fix it, but I can't even find it. Could deleting this file fix it, or is there something else to try?

works for me
by hons on Sunday October 31st 2010, 17:58
Works for me after some testing.

ubuntu 10.04 x64
wine 1.3.5
RosettaStone 3.4.7

Setting winecfg to OSS and using "padsp -M -S wine ..." is working most of the time. Sometimes it gets stuck when doing the microphone check.

And the most strange... I need to keep the sound preferences window open to have sound recognition working in rosetta!?!

No Sound
by Neonfly on Friday October 8th 2010, 11:03
I installed Rosetta Stone without any problems but I get no sound. I tried several wine versions (now 1.3.4) but still the same error (AUDIO ERROR). Sound works with other applications.

Rosetta Stone works, but...
by Lyle on Sunday September 26th 2010, 17:58
...I get reams of:

err:gsm:GSM_DriverProc libgsm support not compiled in!

and it seems to leak file descriptors.

I set ulimit -n 65000. Rosetta works for a long time but eventually gives some error messages and stops responding, and I have to use xkill to get rid of the window. I get:

wine client error:2d8: pipe: Too many open files
err:wave:wodOpen Error open: Too many open files
err:wave:wodOpen Error open: Too many open files
err:gsm:GSM_DriverProc libgsm support not compiled in!
err:wave:wodOpen Error open: Too many open files
err:winediag:FILE_CreateFile Too many open files, ulimit -n
probably needs to be increased

I'm thinking that the error messages and the file descriptor leak are related.

Would acquiring libgsm and re-compiling wine fix the file descriptor leak?

BTW: Rosetta Stone 3.4.5; wine 1.2 compiled with slackbuilds.org slackbuild; slackware64 13.1.

Thanks,
Lyle.

Wine 1.3 on Ubuntu 10.4 doesn't work
by Paul on Sunday August 22nd 2010, 5:51
Hi I've tried versions 1.0, 1.1.42. 1.2 & 1.3 for Rosetta stone. On 1.3 I was able to install satisfactorily but have struggled to get audio & the program to work. I am looking for an easy solution to get it working on ten computers for an NGO

Rosetta Working!
by caitlin pennington on Sunday August 15th 2010, 21:29
Using Wine v1.2 in Ubuntu Karmic, I was able to install and run Rosetta Stone successfully! Installation did not complete in older versions of Wine. I did not use, but have installed Play On Linux if that makes any difference to those of you with problems. I know it's just a front end, but perhaps it includes an extra library that helps somehow.

New language cd's would not install after rosetta installation. After rebooting my computer; however, the languages installed flawlessly. Everything works great, including the microphone.

Microphone is not working for me.
by Benjamin Turok on Sunday August 1st 2010, 3:58
Microphone is not working for me. it works with ubuntu recorder... i tried playing around with the audio drivers and stuff... still wont work.

its not detecting it under rosetta stone configuration panel. dosent detect the microphone device.

without the microphone working i dont think it desrves platinum... probably should be droped down to gold. i hear most people are having the same issue.

If somebody has a workaround for this issue id appreciate if they post a "step by step" guide to fixing it...

No Mic
by Lex on Thursday July 29th 2010, 7:44
Sound ok
Mic doesn't work, (very common problem look on the forums), sometimes mic is detected depending on which version of wine but still wont work even if detected.
Mic work fine with all other OS programs and Skype so this is a Wine bug and a very common one.
I've tried all the fixes I can find and tried winepulse but still no joy.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

microphone
by Guenter on Sunday April 25th 2010, 21:39
I would not give the test result a "Gold" mark without a working microphone. Rosetta Stone tries to improve a learner's pronunciation using speech recognition. This feature is lost without a working microphone.

Anyway, it generates an application errror at startup on Mandriva Free 2010, but I have not tried winetricks yet.

Microphone detected but doesn't not pickup voice
by eric on Wednesday February 10th 2010, 20:16
Running under Ubuntu 9.04, Wine 1.1.38, with the ALSA driver selected in winecfg.

Rosetta Stone will detect my microphone but during microphone configuration, the display showing the audio input from the microphone maxes out even if nothing is said into the microphone. It is almost as if some sort of static or feedback is being created by Wine. The microphone works fine in native Linux apps. Any suggestions?
