My attention was brought to this thread recently, and it's encouraging to see so much interest in getting STO running on other platforms besides Windows. I have been poking around lately with getting the Cryptic engine running under Wine, and thanks to some joint work with CodeWeavers it's looking like full support is just around the corner.
In fact, last night I was able to log into the beta and play for an hour using a lightly modified version of the wine/hacks branch under Ubuntu. Any of you who are reasonably tech-savvy should be able to test my solution:
1. Get the wine/hacks branch from http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/hacks.git
2. Get the following patches from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21401: (kindly provided by Jeremy White)
- "Hack to work around issue with GetProcessMemoryInfo"
- "Patch to address failure in GetCurrentDirectoryA with 0x10000 sized buffers."
3. Build & install.
4. Run winetricks ie6
5. Run the launcher, patch up and go!

Slow grapichs and slower whit sound fix
by Johan on Friday January 29th 2010, 1:34
Grapichs was slow under Open Beta test on my computer whit Ubuntu, maybe slower whit sound fix (mmdevapi=disabled). How come I have a Radeon HD 3870 card whit 512 MB of DDR4 vidoeram. GPU at 800Mhz. CPU is a Quadcore Phenom 9600. A RAID strip of tow harddrives. System montero recoginse 7,8 GB of ram.
In WINEDEBUG=-all wine GAmeClient.exe for STO is this recoginsed:
CPU: 1150 Mhz (4/4 cores) / RAM: 3901 MBs (3204 free) / Video Card: Unknown / Driver Ver: UnknownVendor / UserVA: 2.0GB / OS Ver: 5.1.2600 / VidMem: 512 MBs

On Mac OS X, i got the Winehacks repo to work with the 2 patches, along with the sound fix in winecfg... as long as I disabled GLSL. Works ok on for some people, but I had to disable it... it runs fine with it disabled!
If we can get past the loading crash...
by doh123 on Sunday January 17th 2010, 11:16
If we can get past the loading crash, then the game should work, as I can get it to run fine in VMWare fusion 3, which uses wined3d for graphics. I have been trying to figure out the specific part that's causing the crash, so worst case we can at least make a source patch workaround. I've also tried the winehacks git that works with Champions and it has the same crash...
I have been able to install without "ie6 corefonts fontfix gecko liberation tahoma" from winetricks.
After the login screen I get a second screens where we are supposed to get the latest news about the game, but not only the center area is content-less, but also I see a drop-down list that is empty (I don't know what it is supposed to contain as I have no Windows machine to use for thest).
Here it is the lines that are displayed on console upon clicking "Engage":
