Additional Comments

Ran with a fresh .wine and used winetricks ie8 directx9 vcrun2008 and was unable to get anything to work beyond the initial install. There's some comments about a fix regarding the IE installs, but I have thus far been unable to replicate this.

HOWTO

This game requires IE7+ to be installed for the Launcher to function.

cd ~/.wine
wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
chmod +x winetricks
winetricks ie8

If walking forward causes your character to roll you will need to enable a work around in the console before playing the game and once finished disable the work around.  This is a bug in X that has been fixed so newer distributions will not have this issue.

Before playing:

xset r off

After playing:

xset r on

In general you will want to play STO using the low graphics option in the profile selector that comes up when the game loads.  If you have very recent hardware you will be able to play using the higher graphics option.

Any other bugs you find should be reported!

Legacy of Romulas works with Linux!!!!!
by Steven Wilson on Thursday May 23rd 2013, 14:05
Using kubuntu rareing ringtail, playonlinux latesst veersion (I cant bring it up while STO is running to check the version) and wine 1.5.18.
It took about 15 minutes to get to character selection. Not bad for the third day after the LOR expansion launched.

by Steven Wilson on Saturday May 11th 2013, 20:18
I finally got it working using playonlinux. Colors are bad too much green and mostly washed out video. I'll try installing xorg-edgers xcrack since I am using an Intel 45 GMA and the Ubuntu Intel open source driver doesn’t work correctly with that chip

Launcher HTML Problem
by Tyler on Wednesday April 10th 2013, 14:34
The launcher opens fine but none of the buttons do anything. Whenever mousing over, off, or clicking any sort or link or button, the console throws some variation of:

fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_toElement (0xf354e00)->(0x33c7bc)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_offsetY (0xf354e00)->(0x33c7bc)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_offsetX (0xf354e00)->(0x33c7bc)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_fromElement (0xf354e00)->(0x33c7bc)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_toElement (0xf342340)->(0x33c80c)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_offsetY (0xf342340)->(0x33c80c)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_offsetX (0xf342340)->(0x33c80c)
fixme:mshtml:HTMLEventObj_get_fromElement (0xf342340)->(0x33c80c)

I assume this means that wine is having issues with the html of the launcher but I have no idea how to go about fixing it.

Launcher content problem
by Brandon Morris on Sunday January 6th 2013, 2:29
I seem to be having a minor issue that is presently a major issue (since I can't work around it). When I load the launcher I, where the content should be, I get several Japanese characters in the top left corner of the content window(/frame?). here's a pic of the window to better illustrate what I mean i46.tinypic.com/2hn402o.jpg

I'm not sure what the problem is, I have all the necessary things installed, ie8, vcrun2008, I've ran through all of the answers that were launcher issues (Despite none of them being the issue I'm having). I know one solution would be to reinstalling wine. Unfortunately, that is not really an option. I have other games installed and they may or may not become non-working. They were installed into the wine setup and not through bottles because POL makes installing unlisted games a real pain in the @@@;

(and yes I know bottles can be used without POL, but cli parameters have to be passed and when I'm fighting a problem, I never know just how well exports have taken, if I used them correctly, and even if I did what other factors are in play -- for bottle usage I try to use something canned like POL that takes care of everything though I digress because I'm not using POL nor bottles.)

I don't believe it to the be STO data itself, because I can map a VM drive under VMware to my XP VM pointed at the drive that the game is installed on (not the same as my Linux drive) and everything looks fine (If you exclude the patch downloading crashing at the same point everytime -- which I think is an unrelated issue).

How do i fix this?
by Steven Wilson on Friday November 23rd 2012, 18:11
I get all the way to the game trying to load and this is the final error message from wine and it just hangs. err:winsock:interface_bind Failed to bind to interface, receiving broadcast packets will not work on socket 039c.

kubuntu 12.04.1 wine 1.5.17. Something in winetricks?

Crashes after an hour
by Erich Fischer on Sunday October 21st 2012, 23:51
So, I just installed STO and was giving it a whirl. The game runs fairly well, with funny sound glitches every once in a while, but the graphics are more or less smooth. However, after about an hour, no matter what I'm doing, the game crashes, with only the following lines for output (fixmes removed):
err:toolbar:ToolbarWindowProc unknown msg 200b wp=00000000 lp=0033d8e4
err:toolbar:ToolbarWindowProc unknown msg 200b wp=00000000 lp=0033d8e4
err:rebar:REBAR_WindowProc unknown msg 200b wp=00000000 lp=00627124

Is there some way to eliminate the crashes? I am comfortable patching/compiling wine. Also, for the record:
Ubuntu 12.10 x64
wine 1.5.15 (x32 chroot)

P.S. Is there a fix for the long initial loading times? I can live with it, but it is a little annoying.

Graphics epic faile
by Steven Wilson on Friday October 19th 2012, 17:51
Its too dark to play and no amount of monitor adjusting helps. The calibration slider doesn't seem to do anything ether. Kubuntu 12.01.4 last updated yesterday and wine 1.4 Ubuntu version.

RESOLVED Wine 1.4 + Ubuntu 12.04
by Joe Brouhard on Sunday April 15th 2012, 22:08
Okay Figured out how to get this working.

You need to set WINEARCH=32 every time you run winetricks or even install the system if you have a 64-bit Wine install (or a 64-bit install of Ubuntu 12.04). Takes a little tweaking, but it will work.

WINEARCH=win32 winetricks ie8
WINEARCH=win32 wine /setup.exe

and launch as normally. You may need to set some configs in winecfg, but in order for winecfg to work properly, you will have to set "WINEARCH=win32".

Cannot get past launcher?
by Peter on Friday March 9th 2012, 14:45
Hey all,

Issue: cannot click 'Patch' or 'Play' in the launcher

I know that I encountered this problem previously, and subsequently installed ie8 using winetricks and then the problem was gone, but its reappeared recently. i have removed all instances that I could find of wine, winetricks and any other wine based variants to have a fresh install for 1.4.

I used the bundled winetricks to install ie8 but the problem is there again and it hasnt fixed it.

Anyone else still getting this issue, and anyone have a workaround please? would appreciate any help

Right-mouse button?
by Evil on Saturday February 4th 2012, 19:38
Using the right mouse button to look around doesn't work at all for me - the screen jumps around like crazy when I try it. If I'm in fullscreen mode, it's not quite as bad as windowed; I can almost control where I'm looking by moving the mouse three times further than I should have to and ignore all the intermediat jumping. Still, it's still pretty unusable in any mode.

Anyone else have this issue and have any tips?

BTW - I'm running this under Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2, and don't have the roll problem that the xset tips are meant to fix.

Installer
by James Potts on Friday January 20th 2012, 15:34
I was able to use files.startrekonline.com/installer/star_trek_online_setup.exe to install the launcher, which is now at 72% for me. Neither of the downloaders worked.

Note that the installer above did crash, but not until after installing the launcher exe and link, so when it crashes just close it and run the launcher.

I hope this helps somebody somewhere. :-)

Can't download with the installer
by Gavin on Friday January 20th 2012, 11:59
Hey, I'm trying to get this running in OSX with Wine 1.3.37. It seems that they removed the torrent link from the website, so your only option is to download their installer, which seems to be a small specialized torrent client.

The issue is that the game does not download. It gets about 3% in and then gives me an error message. Has anyone else had this problem and/or knows how to fix it?

Works great...
by Daniel on Thursday November 17th 2011, 14:39
I followed the directions, getting IE installed did the trick.

The game runs flawlessly other than a very slow loading screen and severe lag when loading a new sector zone, beaming onto a planet with away team, or loading the bridge of a ship. Once it's all loaded, the lag disappears.

Sometimes, it crashes during logout. Restarting the app shows a crash dialog and recommends scan of files. I scanned a few times, but realized that it isn't instability of the files that caused the crash so I don't do it anymore.

My observations
by Stefan T on Sunday September 25th 2011, 6:56
My wine version is 1.3.29, using Linux.

Using the installer that downloads the game does not work, it fails shortly after starting the download. This happens with either IE7 or IE8 installed. I used the official torrent link and installation worked without problems.

The login/patcher window takes very long to fully load and has high CPU usage. It also has some glitches with IE7 installed. It looks correkt with IE8 installed.

The game seems to work Ok with GLSL and multisampling enabled. At least the in space tutorial mission. Audio is also without problems.

Sound and graphics...
by doh123 on Saturday September 24th 2011, 17:47
Dunno if this is just OSX...

Starting at 1.3.25 when mmdevapi has to be enabled for any sound to work in games, STO always crashed during starting up on the Cryptic Screen. Starting at 1.3.29 luckily it doesn't crash anymore, but the sound is like stuttery and echoey so bad you can't tell what the sound is supposed to be...

I've also noticed in these later Wine versions where AA is not working, I have to turn it on. If I leave AA off, there are screw ups int he graphics around many objects all over the place, but turning AA on fixed that.

strange issue
by Mike on Thursday June 3rd 2010, 3:38
I'm fairly new to linux, I am using WINE 1.1.42 it seems to be all working, at least it's patching now, but my mouse will disappear whenever I move it over the window that STO is in, is there a way for me to fix this? I assume this will still occur when i'm actually in game which could become difficult.

Does STO still work?
by Edward on Monday May 3rd 2010, 6:32
Has there been a regression or did it just not work for one test case?

This game was working great so if that is changed it should be addressed promptly.

by Dif on Friday March 26th 2010, 8:41
I would not be able to test it before tonight (I'm not at home now), but can I guess that turning off "Repeat Key accessibility" from the graphical tool of the window manager is the same of giving the command "xset r off" from the command line (I am using Kubuntu)?

In this case I can confirm that using that command solves the problem, but then I have to give the reverse command ("xset r on") after playing or I have the same problem on the desktop like scrolling through text (and this is the same thing described on the bug 18296 comment #19).

I am using Kubuntu 9.10 64 bit fully patched with KDE 4.4.1.

Random crashes
by Bryan Duff on Wednesday February 17th 2010, 18:02
Everything seems to work as others describe, except:

1) Garbled background images (for example, when talking to someone the background looks like a Cosby sweater - random blocks of color).

2) Crashes - every 15 minutes or so.

This was the same on 1.1.37, 1.1.38, and 1.1.38+ (current git as of 3 days ago).

How I got it to work....
by doh123 on Tuesday February 2nd 2010, 17:57
on Mac OS X... this is how I got it to work...

Winehacks git 1.1.36 with the 2 patches.

In the registry... in Direct3D section
disable glsl (fixed a start up crash)
enable Multisampling (lets STO see AA as an option)

in Winecfg
disable mmdevapi (makes sound work)

Install IE7 through Winetricks

major bug in game is graphics smearing...
this is FIXED by enabling AA in STO video options.
AA does not work, but it does stop the bug from happening.
