If install crashes, try again after running winetricks dcom98.
Unfortunately, the game won't work with this override enabled, so after installed, go in to winecfg and under the Libraries tab, remove the rpcrt4 entry.

Various crashes
by Christie Grinham on Friday December 30th 2011, 3:56
I've tried to get this to work and have had no luck on either of my computers. I managed to get it installed fine, no problem there. I could load the game and it would get to the main menu but when I pressed "New Game" it would do the loading screen and crash as the little light went across the bottom of the screen.
I then re-installed wine to see if this helped, but it just made it worse, it now crashed after the splash screen and says "Could not create 3D device". I have no idea what to do now...
Runs with latest Wine release (1.3.17) but with a few major problems
by Mark Hamik on Sunday April 10th 2011, 2:08
It seems I'm real close to having this game run flawlessly. However, several major bugs are occurring, and I'm not quite sure how to solve all them:
1. Sound doesn't work. With default ALSA sound emulation, I get nothing.
2. I don't get a re-centering secondary cursor, but what I do have is the main hardware cursor (It never leaves the screen) perfectly moving fine, but the games software cursor lags greatly behind, and is detached from the position of the hardware cursor.
3. Starting the game up, I am truly amazed to see it running so well on vanilla settings (The resolution upped to 1440x900), but none of the characters mouths move. This possibly is due to certain drivers not being perfectly emulated so as to cause a few major files within the game to not be loaded properly, but I'm not quite sure.
I'm hopeful someone could figure out the source of these problems if they have indeed experienced them as well. I'm merely posting it like such as I can't consider to be much of an asset to the ongoing emulation development. I'm just stating the problems that have occured. I'm certainly amazed I got this far...
Oh, and I used a No-cd patch from Gamecopyworld.com, and I used the cd version of the game. I don't have the add-on installed.
Wine 1.2 - 1.4
by Ric on Wednesday February 23rd 2011, 3:29
I've been trying to get this game to install for a couple of days now and am getting nowhere. The ratings above are for Wine 1.1 which is no longer available in Gentoo's portage.
I've tried various versions between Wine 1.2.1 (The latest AMD64 stable in portage) and 1.3.14 (The latest unstable in portage) and all result in the installer scrolling through hundreds of the below errors, then closing;
fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x7fae022fb000 0 0x7fae06c9fcb0 4
fixme:atl:AtlModuleInit SEMI-STUB (0x40f900 0x40f010 0x400000)
err:ole:marshal_object couldn't get IPSFactory buffer for interface {7871bfad-dad5-402f-9007-2593e9a07532}
err:ole:ClientIdentity_QueryMultipleInterfaces IRemUnknown_RemQueryInterface failed with error 0x80004002
err:ole:StdMarshalImpl_ReleaseMarshalData could not map object ID to stub manager, oxid=3e00000019, oid=2
err:ole:CoReleaseMarshalData IMarshal::ReleaseMarshalData failed with error 0x8001011d
Applying the dcom98 package via winetricks has no affect either, I guess this again only fixed ealier Wine build.
Slow video/cursor
by JJB3 on Wednesday December 29th 2010, 14:54
The game installed perfectly (patches also, 1.1 & 1.2). After a minute of 5 of playing the game becomes slow. The main menu still works correctly. Do I have incorrect video settings?
Thanks

BW2 crashes before it starts. Help!
by Ben Lee on Friday June 18th 2010, 16:59
I'm a bit of a newbie.
I'm trying to run Black and white 2 on a Mac OS 10.5.8 with the latest version of Wine.
My processor is a 2.4 GHz Intel COre Duo
The install seemed to be without a glitch, and so did the updates.
But whenever I try to run white.exe it crashes and the terminal spits out this information:

I also have problems with Wine Version 1.1.38. For me it is rather Silver than Platinum, sorry! Before and after installing the latest patch I cannot load an existing game, only start new ones. It doesn't matter, if I turn graphics up to full or not. And on the beginning the intro-movie went a bit slow and I also had some graphic issues that concentrated on the two helpers and the creatures...
Does anybody have the same problems or know how to solve them?
Troubles
by boballen55 on Monday April 5th 2010, 21:42
Wine 1.42 wouldn't install. So I tried 1.38 as the platinum rating was and it installed and started up just fine. The graphics have some strange errors (pixels stretched across the screen on the creatures and the conscience things as well as glitchy land). I also have crashes after a few minutes. Any body figured anything out on that?

Crashes after a few minutes
by Alexander C on Tuesday February 23rd 2010, 15:36
I've been hoping to play through this game for a while, and after the above platinum rating decided to try it out. I'm running wine version 1.1.38 on arch linux, and patched the game to v1.2. I'm running this on an nvidia GTX 260, with the latest drivers. The game is installed in a fresh WINEPREFIX.
During play I get thousands of "fixme:d3d:state_pscale >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_VALUE (0x501) from glPointSize(...); @ state.c / 1518" messages, and the terrain is graphically corrupted (black/flickery textures). After a few moments the game then crashes (page fault on read).
Did you have to set any registry keys or install anything special to get the above results? Help!
