HOWTO

# Copying an install from Windows:

# Note: I used a Windows 7 32-bit install. YMMV.

# in Windows:

install CS5

run regedit

navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software

export out the 'Adobe' key, to your Desktop, as adobe_cs5.reg

# back in a real OS and in a CLEAN Wine directory

$ winetricks gdiplus ie6 msxml3 vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008

# Now, copy files from Windows to Wine:

# If you're on a 64-bit version of Windows, use "Program Files (x86)" instead of "Program Files" (untested though)

# $USER refers to your username

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\" to "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Adobe"

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe" to $HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe"

"C:\Documents and Settings\$USER\Application Data\Adobe" to "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/users/$USER/Applications Data/Adobe"

"C:\windows\system32\odbc32.dll" to "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbc32.dll"

"C:\windows\system32\odbcint.dll" to "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbcint.dll"

# Finally, import the Adobe registry entries. Using the file you made earlier, adobe_cs5.reg:

$ wine regedit adobe_cs5.reg

# Lastly, override odbc32 and odbcint as native:

$ winecfg

choose the library tab, type odbc32 in the override box, and choose add. Repeat for odbcint

# Finally, run photoshop:

$ cd "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5"

$ wine Photoshop.exe

for me, on the first run, I got an error that the trial had expired. On the second run, it worked fine, saying I have 30 days. Each subsequent runs still has the dialog, however.

################## NOTE #################

Do not report bugs to wine with an installation done this way. Wait until the installer bugs are fixed or have patches to workaround them!

HOW TO make the Installer to run

By default, after the installer extract nothing happens.

In order to make the Adobe installer tor run you install the following dependencies, do this:

With winetricks, on terminal type this:

 sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib

Make sure you have msvcr80.dll on your wine's system32 folder.

After checking some sources about gdiplus I also copied gdiplus.dll to system folder

This should make your Installer to boot however making the installer to complete the instalation 100% may need more tweaking

ALT-Click keybinding and Compiz

Thanks to earther for the following email:

I was having problems with the Photoshop 7 ALT-Click keybinding in a new Debian install running Compiz. I did the standard window manager tweak but it still didn't work properly. Then I discovered an ALT-Click keybinding in the Compiz Window Management > Move Window > Initiate Window Move settings. I changed it to 'super' like in Gnome window management and voila, it seemed to get it working again in Photoshop. You might want to add that bit of info to the clone tool info on the Photoshop 7 page.

CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from apartment threaded to multi-threaded
by Kyle Keiper on Tuesday June 24th 2014, 9:43
I'm close to getting the installer to run, but I can't figure out where this error is coming from. It's shutting down the installer, so obviously, it's being a pain. Does anyone know what causes this bug?

Photoshop starts but when opening a new or existing file it hangs
by Igor Franchuk on Sunday March 17th 2013, 13:47
I just run into a weird problem with wine 1.5.25, udev 197-r1, gentoo amd64 multilib, CS5 & 313.26

At some point I can't tell exactly what package was updated starting PhotoShop would have caused GPUInitCrashed created at "\Photoshop\Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings".

When this happened Photoshop could boot with a warning message that OpenGL was disabled but whenever I opened a new or existing file it would hang. Overriding ole32 with a native library would fix this problem but native ole32 has many other different issues and it was not an option. Somehow I don't know why re-assembling xorg-server from kde and a different nvidia driver would fix the problem till the reboot. CS5 would work normally but after reboot the same problem repeated itself - opening or creating a new file = freezing

I removed GPUInitCrashed but still the problem was there. I tried many different things for about 3 hours but nothing seemed to help. I was suspecting some GPU incompatibility problem and finally I added

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop\12.0]
"AllowOldGPUS"=dword:00000001

And CS5 could again open the new files. Whoever runs into this problem - try adding the key above.

And for the record, doing the way it is in the current Howto resulted in many many problems, and I was never able to make it fully work. So this is why I did it the way I described above.

Somewhat better, but...

I see a warning have been added. But it would have been much better to instruct the user on creating a separate prefix for Photoshop. But oh well...

[post new] [reply to this]

Instructing the user to wipe wineprefix?!?!?!
by Storm on Sunday January 13th 2013, 10:02
In the HOW TO, you write:

# back in a real OS:
$ rm -rf ~/.wine

WTF?!?!?! Do you realize how terribly WRONG this is?!?!?

Most people on this planet use Wine not solely for Photoshop. Telling a beginner to follow your instructions will result in them wiping their entire prefix, obliterating all other programs they possibly installed with Wine prior.

Please correct this!

Not only experts use Wine, many many beginners and intermediates do as well, including myself. I usually just follow instructions as they are, copy-pasting commands into console emulator, and if I didn't know what "rm -rf" does, I would have wiped all my games (that took many hours to install and make work) because of these bad instructions!

Brushes broken for me too
by kerin on Sunday December 9th 2012, 2:58
Managed eventually to get CS5.1 installed, but as several users have pointed out this is without functional brushes. I've tried the following:

* Different window manage
* No window manager
* Windowed fullscreen
* Installing Wine 1.5.18
* Installing Wine 1.5.19
* Punching a walrus
* Starting a new wineprefix and reinstalling
* Starting a new 32-bit wineprefix and reinstalling
* Crying
* Offerings to the dark goddess Lolith

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 with an nVidia video card, running Gnome 3 and a handful of UI-fixing extensions. I don't know if any of that's relevant.

Maybe the people who aren't having broken brushes are using vanilla CS5 as opposed to 5.1? It'd be great if people could weigh in (working brushes or not) with their Photoshop versions and other details.

By the way, the "brushes" thing is kind of a misnomer - this seems to affect all drawing tools, including the pencil and eraser. Awful.

Installer working?
by Janek Bevendorff on Wednesday August 22nd 2012, 17:00
The latest test results indicate that the installer is working, but I can't figure out how. Was this only done with repackaging (as described in an earlier comment) or is there something I missed?

The bug report for the installer exiting with error code (-1) (bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22680 ) is still open and hasn't been updated since March 2012.
It would be awesome if Photoshop (and other CS products) could finally be installed without getting gray hair (curse you, Adobe!).

Almost everything working for me
by Pierre-André Leclair on Wednesday July 18th 2012, 10:26
I'm really impressed to see Photoshop run this good in Ubuntu.

I've been giving a shot at Linux every few years to see the current status, and everytime, I ended up going back to Windows for various reasons. Mostly because of applications support and games, or incompatible recent hardware.

However, it's been a while I haven't updated my computer (still is a quad core, so still is doing pretty good), and I'm not playing games much anymore. Mostly working inside of Photoshop.

My windows installation became sluggish and needed a re-install, and after a quick search for photoshop linux on google, I noticed that many people were running recent versions of photoshop in linux.

Decided to give it a try, and here I am!

When I checked here for help to get it to install, I didn't noticed the extra procedures to try to get the installer to run correctly. So I installed a fresh win7 in virtualbox, installed photoshop in it, and copied the registry and necessary files from the vbox to wine dir, and everything worked from there.

Bridge is even working fine! Well, I'm not using bridge much, so I only started it, and played with it a bit, and it seemed alright.

I'm even able to open up psds with 3d objects in it.

So far, only 2 psds made PS crash after trying to load them. The progress bar went to 100% then crashed PS. Tried 2-3 times on each, and it was always the same. I can't really see why those two are causing problems... but it does not really matter.

Here are a list of glitches I've noticed:

-The brush tools are acting erratic for me as well. Most of the time, when I click and drag, it will register the click, and draw a dot, but will not register the drag and only draw that dot.

I also noticed that if you right click then left click and drag, most of the time the drag will register correctly.

-I've seen the type tool bug happens a time or two, but been able to use it more often than it bugged on me. When it bugs out, the type cursor shows up, but typing any text will not do anything, but draw a space every few characters you type.. might be related to opengl drawing.

-Also noticed PS is alot more stable with opengl drawing turned off. With it turned on, there is more bugs, and refresh problems.

-When pulling out a pane, and minimizing photoshop after the pane is open, photoshop will minimize but the pane will stay always on top.

-When dragging photoshop to the edge of the screen to automatically adjust the window size and snap to the edge, from a bigger window state, ps will snap and dock to the side, but it's size will stay the same. It doesn't re-adjust properly.

When dragging on the titlebar to manually resize it, it resulted in a crash.

-Here is a weird bug I noticed... this one is realllllly strange. I'm developing UIs for iPhone.

When I save my pngs inside my export directory I had on windows, which is still in ntfs, but still accessible from wine, the png appears fine on both my computer and looks ok with iFile on the iPhone, but trying to use the image after a respring result in the image not displaying, and the original iOS image shows up.

After playing a bit with different export and compression settings, I tried to save the png to my documents, which ends up in my home directory in linux, and it worked perfectly on the iPhone after a respring. iOS was able to load it properly and replace the original one.

All those are relatively minor bugs, and I could certainly work around them.

Also worth noting, I installed wine from the software center, and I do not have the latest version. Running 1.4 (in Ubuntu 12.04)

Since it is working pretty good, I fear that upgrading to the latest might break up more things and make it a nightmare.

I was even able to install a zxp extension with the extension manager fine!

Another thing worth noting, it runs faster than it did on my win 7 install. Now I know I can't really compare the speed I have now to what I used to have on Windows, since my windows was not really running top notch. However, I can't remember having seen photoshop load that faster on any windows install I did. It loads blazingly fast on linux.

My actions also run very quickly, compared to what I'm used to!

Will come back here to report any other findings, if I do.

This might just be THE time where I will leave windows for good! So excited!

Permissions/XP
by Laura on Thursday July 12th 2012, 10:12
My version randomly stopped working a couple of days ago, after working (with the brush / smudge tool 'dotting; and text tool bugs) for a while. I've been trying various things and found that Wine had reselected XP compatibility as default, and also that the permissions for group and others were set to read-only. I changed XP to Vista, and read only to read-and-write and it now loads as it did before.
Also, some text errors can be fixed by installing the Adobe core fonts if you don't yet have them.
Now back to trying to fix the previous bugs.

Paintbrush stopped working
by Anthony on Monday May 7th 2012, 20:12
I've been using Photoshop CS 5.1 in wine on ubuntu for a while now with minimal problems, but now it appears there has been some regression in newer versions of wine. It appears that the paintbrush works very inconsistently if it all. It only creates dot's for some reason, it can't create stroke. Two of the people who have submitted test results here on the appdb have mentioned this, I was wondering if there is a work around. I would rather not have to downgrade wine to use photoshop.

Just removed wine 1.4 and install older version
by Van Luu on Monday April 2nd 2012, 10:47
Go here and grab a version that will definitely work (look above) wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/binary/
I just remove wine1.4 and reinstall wine1.3.33 instead, 'cause Photoshop runs best in that version, I think. :)
Sometimes, the latest version of a software doesn't mean it is better than the former ones.
Enjoy Photoshop in Ubuntu :)

Successful install on Ubuntu 11.10
by Andrew Martin on Tuesday March 6th 2012, 21:25
Using the Adobe Photoshop CS5 trial and WINE 1.4-rc5, I was unable to get the Set-up.exe program to run, nor was I able to use the Dell KACE App Redistributor program to create an MSI installer (it froze part-way through scanning and packaging the changes). However, copying files from an existing Windows install worked well. I followed these instructions, which are similar to others here with a few additional tweaks:
www.thetechrepo.com/id=567

The only issue I have encountered is bug #23898 (where the windows stay visible when switching applications or virtual desktops). I have not yet found a workaround for this.

I was unable to update Adobe Camera Raw included with the install, 6.3, to the latest 6.6. When running the installer, it failed with error u44m21218.

Won't install on Wine 1.4 rc1
by Jelle De Loecker on Thursday February 2nd 2012, 14:35
The installer does not crash, but it does run into a problem.

Here's the Dutch output:

Setup heeft een fout (-1) aangetroffen tijdens de installatie. Start de computer opnieuw op en probeer het opnieuw.

Basically it says it found an error, and asks you to reboot the computer and try again.

CS5 w/ 1.3.36
by Lori Imel on Tuesday January 3rd 2012, 16:11
I just was able to get this installed - I am SO excited!!!

When I used the magic wand tool - I would get these funky lines going up and down my image (a lot of solid colors) - it would make the selection... I deleted what I needed and when I did a ctr d - the image was normal....

might be a problem with all selections?

I am so glad to be able to use this at all!!! Who cares if there are some quirks.... :)

1.3.33 - bridge and mini-bridge work!
by Dan MacDonald on Sunday November 20th 2011, 17:51
I am happy to report I have 32bit PS CS5 running with wine 1.3.33 under Debian Wheezy amd64 and its working better than ever. It seems one of the last major probs with running PS under wine has been fixed recently as both bridge and mini-bridge work now!

Photoshop seems pretty much fully usable but it is still marred by graphical redrawing issues such as the the text tags not disappearing (workaround: mouseover the PS minimise or maximise buttons), the layers, history etc windows persisting when you switch desktop (avoid this by minimising PS before you switch desktop) and the images becoming unusually obscured when you move the PS windows around.

Amazing work wine devs - get this, word 2010 and excel 2010 working and you've got a lot of happy Linux/MS convert campers I'd say!

:D

scrambled picture
by Rob van der Burgt on Wednesday November 9th 2011, 17:27
After following the instructions photoshop started but showed scrambled pictures. I fixed this by disabling OpenGL Drawing:

Open photoshop > in main menu: edit > preferences > uncheck "Enable OpenGL Drawing"

Works perfect for me now.

Photoshop on Ubuntu Oneiric
by Jim Wharton on Friday September 23rd 2011, 17:23
Following these directions, Photoshop.exe crashes on Ubuntu Oneiric. I have tried both these directions and using the Photoshop portable.

The irony is, that it will work just fine from the LiveCD. You can download wine1.2 and run it. Once you install the OS, 32 bit or 64 bit, it crashes with:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000048 at address 0x4ec7c1f6 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000048 in 32-bit code (0x4ec7c1f6).

Initially I thought that my crashes were related to running in 64 bit and not having sufficient video drivers. I installed a 32 bit version of Oneiric today, after testing out Photoshop with the Live CD. I was sure I was in the clear. Nope. 32 bit crashes too. I've tried wine1.3 and wine1.2.

Running on 64 Bit Ubuntu
by Jim Wharton on Wednesday September 21st 2011, 19:12
Ok, since I noticed the conversation a few threads down. Let's open up some discussion. If a user has a generic distro supported video card (Intel using the xserver-xorg-intel driver), and is running a 64 bit version of Ubuntu. I know Ubuntu does provide a /usr/lib32 directory that is gets the 32 bit drivers when one installs nvida/ati/amd 64 bit drivers. But is there a way to do this with the generic Intel driver that uses mesa openGL?

Does anyone see a way to run Photoshop in this scenario?

Real discussion only please. No "it works for me" or "google ia32-libs".

Let's talk about how people have gotten this to work.

My experience installing Ubuntu 11.10 last week, had me launch straight into a Unity desktop. I copied over my .wine dir from backup, and launched Photoshop... it popped up instantly... and hasn't come up since.

Tooltips.
by Blake Gripling on Monday September 5th 2011, 6:37
You might also try disabling the tooltips per the glitch posted above. It ain't really that significant, but it can be quite annoying at times.

Kace or Thinapp How to repackage the apps?
by Blahblahbooey on Friday July 15th 2011, 12:38
Another member posted about using Kace repackager to repackage Pshop for better compatibility. Theres not a lot of docs or guides on using Kace and Im unsure how to use it properly. After I run kace through a pre and post scan similar to Thinapp, it creates a very small msi file. Im lost on how to make use of this msi file when its a few megs in size.

Configuration Error 131:4
by Alexis on Monday July 11th 2011, 3:20
I've followed all the steps outlined on this page numerous times. After copying all the files over and running photoshop I get the error message:

"A problem has occured with the licensing of this product. Restart your computer and re-launch the product.

If this problem still occurs...

Error: 131:4
"

This same error happens no matter if I copy files over from a registered product, or from the trial. I have kubuntu 11.04 64 bit, and I am copying the files over from windows 7 64 bit pro.

This thing is driving me crazy. I have spent 12 hours today trying to get this to work and it is now 2:20 am :(.

Panels
by Ric on Saturday July 9th 2011, 5:57
I gave up trying to get the installer to work and followed the above guide for installing to Windows and moving everything over.

Photoshop is running brilliantly, but if I try to open the Paragraph panel or the Character panel, the program crashes out completely. This also happens if I attempt to switch to the Design workspace but I assume this is because this triggers the opening of one of these panels.

Is this a problem everybody has? I've not found a bug report and with the Paragraph panel being such a key tool I'd expect it to be a well known issue if it's not just affecting me.

I don't have a Windows system myself so had to borrow a laptop that already had some Adobe software installed, including the full CS2 suite. I uninstalled the CS2 suite before installing Photoshop CS5, and when copying the Program Files directories I only selected those suffixed with CS5. I copied everything from the Adobe folder in Common Files though.

When running Winetricks i ended up leaving msxml3 out as the download location seems to no longer exist. I also left out ie6 and although I included gdiplus I ended up having to remove this from the libraries tab of winecfg as the program wouldn't run otherwise.

The only other thing worth noting is that the laptop I borrowed was 32bit and I'm running 64. My Wine is compiled with both 32bit and 64bit support though (Gentoo use flags) and so long as I disable the composite effects everything is perfectly responsive.

I'm running Wine 1.2.23.

by James Rose on Friday July 1st 2011, 18:53
I'm trying to install the latest Photoshop, CS5, on Ubuntu 11.04 OS, and ONLY on Ubuntu. How might I even BEGIN to install CS5 when Wine 1.3.15 won't do anything. Please help. I don't know where to start, and any help is better than none. Thank you.

PS, I Installed Ubuntu to rid myself of the God-awful MS Vista OS. I don't have Windows 7 (Legally), and I know I'd be better off getting it, but I'm try to work with what I got.

Alternate Installer (MSI)
by Shanto on Sunday May 8th 2011, 8:29
Working installer for can be created by using AppDeploy Repackager on a supported platform. Resulting MSI package installs (silently) and works very well.

www.kace.com/products/freetools/appdeploy-repackager/download.php

DLL Overrides:
winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib

atmlib.dll copied from up-to-date Windows 7 system.

Photoshop Problem
by Jooji on Friday February 25th 2011, 16:11
I installed every .dll files.

Wine is working correctly and I installed an old version cs4.

But I need Bridge and Camera Raw.

I tried with the full version of CS5 but the installer didn't start. It says:

"The program Set-up.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close."

"This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine."

Some ideas to fix?

installing reported to work?
by Dan Kegel on Saturday October 9th 2010, 19:52
www.makeuseof.com/tag/idiots-guide-installing-photoshop-cs5-ubuntu-1004/
says it installs on wine now? His recipe is basically
winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005 msxml3 atmlib
I haven't verified this myself, and some comments on his
blog say it doesn't always work. I kind of doubt it myself, but...

adobe key
by Pat Wall on Monday July 26th 2010, 1:48
Hello there,
I am wondering exactly which entry you consider to be the Adobe key "export out the 'Adobe' key, to your Desktop, as adobe_cs5.reg" as I have several entries there but am not sure which one to grab.

Under software-adobe I then have photoshop-12.0- then 2 options, application path and plugin path. In each of those folders there are several choices I could take but am not sure what the actual name of it is since nothing is named adobe key.

under adobe folder I have (default)
under photoshop I have (default)
under 12.0 I have (default), Application path, freebeforeslopA, freespace and pluginpath
under application path i have (default)
under plugin path I have (default)

Please try to give me an idea which of these it is that I need.

thank you very much.
