What works
Intalation via http://download.station.sony.com/patch/download/eq2/eq2-us.zip Eq2.exe patcher works to patch & launch the game. (does not display html components) Game play in most zones (at low fps) with pixel shader 3 turned on, crashes after character select if pixel shader 3 is off.

What does not
Pixel Shader 1.0, turning on 3.0 will prevent the crash after character select, but the game runs at unbearably low fps with pixel shader 3 on.

What was not tested
Raids, Station Launcher & Heroic dungeons.

HOWTO
EQ2 is rated "garbage" with Wine versions above 1.1.18 and below 1.2-rc7. Please install Wine 1.2-rc7 or higher, as 1.1.18 will necessitate some irritating registry changes, documented below.

When EQ2 starts for the first time, it will try to run in full-screen mode  This is not supported in Wine, but you can easily switch to windowed mode by alt-tabbing to another window. If you have a dual monitor setup, your fonts will then be twice as wide as they should be; restarting the game fixes this. This isn't true for all users, but it may affect you.

Please ensure your system (and especially your graphics card) meets the minumum requirements set by Sony Online Entertainment for running this game.

To run launchpad 3, you need to install ie8 with winetricks.

Suggested registry settings for Wine 1.1.18 (you do not need these for 1.2-rc7 and up):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER -
  Software -
    Wine -
Direct3D - (you'll have to create this folder)
        DirectDrawRenderer -> opengl
OffScreenRenderingMode -> fbo (with newer video cards)
        PixelShaderMode -> enabled
        RenderTargetLockMode -> texdraw

Also, for 1.01, you will need to edit eq2.ini to disable some font rendering. Put the following line in eq2.ini:

r_font_ft 0 (Not needed unless you are using wine 1.01 or lower)

For wine 1.1.18 and lower: wine_gecko crashes the patcher screen (no BITS support in wine yet. See bug 6253) so if you want to run patcher, rename the HKCU/wine/MSHTML. That should disable Gecko. Or, you can simply not install wine_gecko in the first place. With 1.27-rc7 some functionailty of gecko with the launcher may or may not work, but it wont crash the game.

Download Locations
The station launcher is no longer supported by SOE. Launchpad 4 is now the default launcher. Using any other will cause it to upgrade itself to Launchpad 4. It can be downloaded directly from:

http://launch.soe.com/eq2//

shader 3.0 and bug reporting

I'd like to remind everyone, that tho shader 3.0 is in fact awesome and better than 1.0, though please before we start complaining about bugs and whatnot especially with shader 3.0 please remember that its buggy in windows too, and try to get bugs that are only in wine only please.

If we can get this working and looking exactly the same in windows and linux and there's still stupid bugs that SOE wont fix that makes the game platinum here even tho there are major graphical glitches.

WARNING

Please everyone remember that this is a buggy buggy game.  Please try to only post here about bugs that are not present in windows.  Sometimes its really hard to tell the difference between bugs in wine and bugs in Everquest yourself.

Please Please, before you submit bug reports or testing feedback. If at all possible try to compare anything you do here in Linux  with the same thing in windows.

Please post data and questions under the correct version!
PLEASE DO NOT POST "Destiny of Velious" test results under the "Sentinel's Fate"!
You may select the Destiny of Velious version of EQ2 by scrolling to the top of your screen, clicking on EverQuest 2 in the game hierarchy, and then, at the next page, clicking Sentinel's Fate.

Versions of EverQuest II

The game requires you to run the newest version of the game, so nobody uses an older version. Because of this, the only "versions" we maintain are the full install client and the streaming install client. Please place all test results in the proper one.

EverQuest II Extended has been merged with the Live game. The Steam version is a wrapper around the Full Install Client and still uses Launchpad.

Crashes after clicking on
by KP on Saturday May 28th 2011, 16:09
OS: Ubuntu 11.04
Wine: 1.3.20
Dual Screen: Yes
Nvidia: GeForce GTX 460 (version: 4.1.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06)
Problem: Game crashes after clicking on "Play" button. Error indicates "serious problem" without indicating what the problem might actually be.

Destiny of Velious is the current expansion, however I do not have that installed. I have stopped for the time being at the previous expansion Sentinel's Fate.

The game has been working great with this setup for quite some time. However, a few months ago the game stopped loading. Not sure why, though I am left to guess that it has something to do with one of the updates. I have been rebooting into windows whenever I wanted to play. I have the game folder setup in such a manner that both Linux/windows use the same folder. That has worked great from day one, and no matter which OS I am running the game is already updated.

I have checked some of the usual settings: graphics not set too high, r_font_ft 0 in eq2.ini, etc. But so far nothing has worked.

Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions? Is there a new program/file that I need to install with winetricks?

1.3.16 or 1.3.17
by Benjamin on Monday April 11th 2011, 8:48
Has anyone else else tried wine versions 1.3.16+ ?

Eq2 fails to load but installing .net 2 and 3 is possible, which allows for ACT to work.

I've seen it reported by quite a few people. There's a thread on Ubuntu Forums about it and someone else reporting the problem and this solution working right right here.

Latests Patch Breaks Game
by Hideaki on Friday January 21st 2011, 6:22
The latest game update breaks the game on Wine. The launcher will fail to start the game, and running EverQuest2.exe will just result in an error. A reported work around is changing your windows version to 2008 or 7. I can confirm that worked for me.

New to Ubuntu - Everquest2.exe problem
by kyle on Sunday December 12th 2010, 10:52
I have Ubuntu 10.10, wine 1.3.9, and I'm totally new to Linux. I was able to install eq2 with the discs (copied disc 2 to my desktop because disc 2 would not run during the install process) The launchpad works alright. I was able to get the updates and hit play - but it would say everquest2.exe has encountered a serious problem and the screen would go black. Somebody mentioned changing wine's audio setting to OSS - I did that. Now when I hit "play" I see the intro movie and after that the screen goes white with these weird white boxes with black shadowed trim and squares smaller boxes in that. I think its text. Then that same everquest2.exe problem message pops up and I have to force quit the game. Pretty much its a white screen. I just want to play the game - I'm not a computer whiz, and I read stuff in forums and blogs with things like .ini and all this other computer jive. Can anyone explain how to fix this to a guy that has a limited understanding of linux and a basic understanding of computers?

Doesn't run at all under 1.3.8 and ATI hardware.
by Martin on Saturday December 4th 2010, 18:21
Installed the game to a windows parition, copied it over to the linux part and tried to run. Crashed with a backtrace followed by a black screen with the EQ2 client build info. Disappointing to say the least.

Intel GMA cards
by Benj on Friday November 19th 2010, 15:21
I tested EQ2 on my MacBook, but I had horrible graphics quality compared to the perfect quality I had in Ubuntu. I believe this is because of the Mac's Intel GMA graphics card. My Ubuntu machine has an Nvidia card. I believe there are other complaints about the Intel cards. Can anybody else confirm this?

Any objections to putting in a warning about shader 3.0?

for the other maintainers
by DJ Dunn on Sunday November 14th 2010, 6:18
so um, besides this one weird bug i have that we cant seem to replicate, as of now how are we going to grade eq2 between gold and platinum.

I do believe that sony wants station launcher to be the official update method, and appdb.winehq does consider that a seperate app.

We know that the eq2 patcher doesn't quite exactly work right, well it doesn't display web content.

since thats no longer the preferred method of update i think we shouldn't consider the eq2 patcher to be necessary for platinum status

oh before i forget concerning platinum status, does eq2 consider shaders 1.0 or 3.0 default?

Unable to start game with 1.3.2 and 1.3.3
by Colin Wetherbee on Thursday September 30th 2010, 2:46
I just returned from three weeks out of town, logged into Station Launcher, and found out EQ2 doesn't want to start anymore. I get a crash from Vivox (which is normal-ish) and then the normal black screen before the title splash screens, but the title screens never appear. At this point, the process goes into the defunct state, and the following message appears in the console.

err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0xb763ebb6
wine client error:24: write: Bad file descriptor

Have any of you seen this behavior or this log message lately?

The game was running well for me on 1.3.2 before I left. Now, I've tried 1.3.2 and 1.3.3 on both my existing install and a fresh install. I see the same behavior for each combination. (I also, begrudgingly, tried rebooting, which didn't fix anything.)

1.1.18 not working anymore and water not rendering
by kjones on Thursday September 23rd 2010, 20:00
Well, it looks like 1.1.18 no longer works for me. After it patches and I hit play, it hangs at the loading screen. I started to use the latest and greatest WINE and water is displaying as a black void. I can live with the fonts not looking the same as on windows, but if anyone can help with the water rendering that would be great.

Test sound on that setting worked fine, just no sound in Everquest. Also started getting crash error when zoning in now, gonna try running through Ubuntu rather than Mint, see if that makes any sort of dirrerence

Odd goings on
by Keiran on Friday September 17th 2010, 2:30
Not quite sure weather to classify this as a bug, but I have been playing EQ2 on LinuxMint LXDE just fine with 1.3.2, last night I bumped it up to LinuxMint 9, updated, got the latest nVidia drivers. But now once I go past launcher I get a "serious Error and must close" window box. Once I press ok the EQ2 window still comes up, pointer and all, but stays as a black screen and when I hit close I must hit Force Quit. Any suggestions to what I've buggered up?

EQ2Maps Add-On
by Benj on Thursday September 16th 2010, 19:25
The "Official" updater doesn't work in Wine because of its reliability on .NET. However, there is a version written in Python that works well under Linux. Hope this helps some of you.

Old computer, new install
by kjones on Sunday July 25th 2010, 12:53
I set up another computer with Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday and loaded Wine 1.2. I tried using the Station Launcher setup, which installed fine, but then when I would try to run it, it would start to load, but then disappear. This also happened with the other new launcher. The "classic" install launcher ran without problems.

Lighting resolution
by kjones on Sunday July 25th 2010, 12:48
This just started up today, but in both 1.1.18 and 1.2 versions the lighting in game is uneven. The top half is nice and bright while the lower half is shaded. Occasionally if I look around, some areas will look like large, shaded pixels shifting around. Adjusting the Graphics Resolution all the way down will eliminate it and adjusting the Lighting Resolution will adjust how much the lower half is shaded. Sliding it lower will lower the amount of shaded area. Also, the Complex Shader also affects this. No changes were made to my system that I know of.

Running forward
by John Beaulieu on Sunday July 11th 2010, 20:17
It seems that under any version of wine that I have gotten eq2 to run under in recent memory that pressing any key after first logging in causes my character to run forward until stopped. Does anybody else have this issue?

Full Screen
by John Beaulieu on Saturday July 10th 2010, 12:37
I just thought I would mention that I am running eq2 in full screen mode and with shader 1.0 just fine. I changed to full screen from the options in the launcher rather than doing it in game.

fonts
by kjones on Saturday July 10th 2010, 8:34
I know in light of other issues that this one is fairly trivial, but the 1.2 fonts in EQ2 just aren't the same as they are in 1.1.18. The only custom UI stuff I use is EQ2 maps. Is there an easy fix for the fonts?

EQ2 with Shaders 3.0 should work with Wine 1.1.43
by Colin Wetherbee on Monday June 28th 2010, 4:56
I filed bug #23417 tonight, regarding the inability to log into a character. The offending commit is between releases 1.1.43 and 1.1.44, and I found that all the "good" commits had pretty good gameplay as long as Shaders 3.0 were enabled.

Shaders 3.0 still provide a pretty sluggish in-game experience, but SOE says the next game update (GU57) will improve the technology and, if I remember correctly, make Shaders 3.0 10 FPS faster than Shaders 1.0 in many cases.

I wonder if we'll be able to stop using 1.1.18 for "real" playing soon? ;)

Bugs from Shadow Odyssey
by Colin Wetherbee on Monday June 28th 2010, 0:18
I just copied a bunch of bugs over to SF from the TSO appdb page. I omitted two, though.

6194 - I can't really see how this applies to EQ2. Is it still relevant? Should it be closed? Oddly, EQ2 is the only application linked to this bug.

16487 - I'm pretty sure this is fixed, as I've been using Station Launcher for a couple Wine versions now. Anyway, it's a Station Launcher issue, not an EQ2 issue.
