HOWTO

Installing World of Warcraft in Wi­ne

NOTE: It is HIGHLY recommended for ATI users to use the latest Catalyst package found at ati.amd.com. As of release 9.8, this fixes TONS of bugs.

NOTE: It is HIGHLY recommended that you have the latest stable wine version installed (currently - wine 1.2.1).
[Beta versions of wine are unstable. If you use a Beta version, check the test results above to see if it is reported as working with your Linux distribution].

Preliminary Steps:

nVidia / ATI : Make sure you have the proprietary driver for your video card installed, or WoW will not run. Once they are installed, check to see if Direct Rendering is enabled by typing the following code into Terminal :-

glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"

If it returns direct rendering:Yes, you're good to go!

Installing:

[ You can install World of Warcraft in wine through a variety of methods, such as using the CD or automatic downloader. It's your choice ultimately. ]

To install using the downloader just run it with Wine and follow the steps. There are no major problems using the downloader. If you are using the downloader you can jump straight to the  Configuring section.

Below are the instructions for installing from WoW Disks :-

To install from the CDs the files need to be copied over to your computer as attempting to install directly from disk will result in failure.

Create a folder in a convenient location such as on the desktop called wow_install

You will only need to install WoW using the Wrath of the Lich King disks. (The Wrath disks will install the WoW core game and the Burning Crusde as well)

Insert Disk 1 of the Wrath of the Lich King.

When you open the disk you will not be able to see all the files as they are hidden. To get them to show run the following code in Terminal :-

sudo mount -o remount,unhide /dev/sr0

If that code doesn't work try this one :-

sudo umount /dev/cdrom
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o ro,unhide /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0/

Then open the disk again and you should see all the files.

Open the disk and copy all the files to your wow_install folder.

Now insert Disk 2 of the Wrath of the Litch King and follow the same step above to unhide the files.

Copy only the Installer Tome #.mpq files to the wow_install folder. (# will be a number. Basically from Disk 2 copy only the Installer Tomes that have a number in their name (NOT the one without a number, we got that one from Disk 1)).

Once complete eject the disk and run the Installer.exe in the wow_install folder with wine. (Simply right click it and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader").

WoW will now install.

Once the installation is complete a shortcut will be on the desktop to run WoW. Of course you will have to go through the patching process.

Note: A few people have reported that the installer just sits at "Preparing to Install". A solution is to ensure that you have the correct ports opened on your firewall or to temporarily disable your firewall. Make sure you edit / disable your firewall in your router (and on your distro if you use one).

Note: Some users report that the WoW launcher/updater may freeze during the patching process. If this happens to you, simply close it down (terminate the process) and then just start it again from the desktop shortcut or Launcher.exe. It will carry on from where it was before.

Note: WoW may experience problems if you are attempting to run it from a Windows partition. The WoW folder must NOT be in an NTFS filesystem. Ensure the folder you are running WoW from is in your Linux partition, under your Linux filesystem.

IMPORTANT - Make sure you go through the Configuring section below.

IMPORTANT - Linux distributions using pulseaudio (such as Ubuntu) will probably experience sound issues. See the"No sound with Pulse Audio" section in the Tweaks and Troubleshooting area below for a fix. Also note that sound quality may not operate at its best with WINE, despite which *nix you are running WINE under.

IMPORTANT - Launch WoW from the desktop shortcut or from the Launcher.exe rather than directly from WoW.exe. This is because the launcher will check for updates and will auto patch/update the game if necessary. If you launch WoW directly from the WoW.exe (such as in the "No sound with Pulse Audio" fix), then make sure you still launch the Launcher.exe from time to time just to check for updates, not to run the game.

Configuring

The suggested way to run World of Warcraft in wine is using OpenGL. You will often gain tons of FPS this way. Operation without the opengl flag is often unreliable and will not start with some cards.

Simply add the -opengl flag to the end of your WoW Launcher (recommended) :-

Open the WoW desktop shortcut (Right Click > Properties) and add -opengl to the end of the command (leaving a space). (Recommended method). (Recommended for first run after CD or download).

NOTE: As of patch 4.0.1 hardware cursor functionality has been added for OpenGL mode.

Alternatively, you can either edit your WTF/Config.wtf in your World of Warcraft directory to include :-

SET gxApi "opengl"

(Note that this file is only created after you have logged in once).

The game will now run. If you have any problems or issues please check the sections below for fixes or post a comment for help.

Tweaks and Troubleshooting

You should be good to go! If you are experiencing any other issues, read on.

Sound issues

It should be noted that sound implementation of WINE is still mostly incomplete and you may be subject to buggy sound or bad quality.

If you cannot get any sound at all, try deleting your .wine directory (backup needed files!)
- On Ubuntu, you can find your .wine directory by going to your Home folder, and pressing CTRL + H

No sound with Pulse Audio

"well for those users with a distro using pulse audio (for ex. Ubuntu) if you set wine to OSS the sound for WoW works great, and if you add padsp before wine pulseaudio wraps the OSS sound (like alsa-oss but better) and you can use vent, music etc at the same time :)" ~ Thanks to Patrick Arman

Sound stutter:

- If your sound stutters then there is not much you can do about it apart from adjusting your sound driver in WINE. There are various drivers and settings (e.g. ALSA, OSS, Emulation Mode) which you can try. Do note than Windows 7 mode seems to still be incompatable with many of the WINE sound drivers. Best is to use wither Windows 2000 or Windows XP mode.
- Also try the "padsp wine" command in the terminal.

Unfortunately, most sound stutter problems are a result of bugs in WINE, especially with PulseAudio distros. In time, these issues may be solved. But for now, try to fiddle around with the settings until you get the correct combination.

Bad sound quality or latency:

Its highly likely that this is due to WINE, but first try to fiddle around with your sound settings before drawing to that conclusion. If you are not satisfied with the quality of the sound you get, then feel free to include that in your test results.

Graphics-related issues

Graphics corruption when doing certain quests which causes you to appear to be in a nether world:

INTEL issues

Unfortunately, Intel does not make its own drivers for their cards for Linux. Their Windows drivers aren't even that good to start with.

For World of Warcraft to work properly, you need to look for an Open Source Intel Driver that gives you direct OpenGL rendering support. Most dristros will have already had a good driver implemented into the kernel, particularly Ubuntu. So you need not worry about it.

There are no known Issues with Intel Cards, however, it should be expected that the FPS will be lower as the Intel chips are integrated and hence share their video memory with the computer's main RAM as well as makes use of extra processing from the CPU.

Other issues

Open Source Graphics Drivers:

If you have low frames with your Open Source drivers, then try the proprietary drivers for ATI and Nvidia. The Open Source Drivers have a lot of performance issues at the moment.

FPS stutter

- Ensure that you have disabled any special desktop effects

- Set farclip (the view distance slider) to 777 (about midway on the slider) ~ Thanks to Andrew

Bad FPS in general:

- Make sure that your latency bar is not red.
- Please set the MaxFPS setting to at least 20-30. This will decrease the resource taking of the game on the computer and thus result in lower temperatures. This will increase the game's performance quite a lot. ~ Thanks to Xio
- Ensure your CPU is not being overloaded with instructions. In other words, whether or not its usage is 100%
- Ensure that you are running the game in OpenGL mode. You can do this by either adding SET GxApi "OpenGL" in the config.wtf or passing the -opengl argument in the terminal.
- AMD users will want to ensure that AMD Cool 'n Quiet is disabled in the BIOS. Please see your motherboard manufacturer's site documentation for more details on how to do this.
- Make sure the CPU scaling governor is set to "Performance" rather than "OnDemand"~ thanks to Vidar Wahlberg.


NB: If you have a multi-core processor, chances are that your FPS drops is caused by
WoW not identifying your cores correctly. A user has submitted a patch that might solve
this for you if you compile it alongside WINE from source: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11674#c64 ~ Thanks to Vitality

 

No higher-level shadows or water effects available

This will not be available for the OpenGL mode until such a time Blizzard chooses to implement it, which is highly unlikely.

Bad graphical corruption in certain areas with Direct3D

  • Find the following registry entry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\

  • Add a new key (type String) and name it 'OffscreenRenderingMode'

  • Double click the new key and add the value 'pbuffer'

System-related issues

If you are finding that WoW is installing correctly but at the final step of logging in you receive an error message "There was an error logging in..." try the fix below :-

The problem is related to DLL files needed for the process being unable to "communicate" with each other.

Add the following DLL override to your Libraries tab of Winecfg :-

wldap32.dll (Native)

This should solve the issue and login should not work.

Alternative :-

WoW may fail if you are running it from a windows partition. The WoW folder cannot be in an NTFS filesystem. Copy your WoW folder over to your Linux filesystem.

Linux kernel:

Try to see if your kernel is up-to-date. New kernel releases should appear in your distrubution's update manager.

It is also a good idea to use the kernels that is released by your distro and not compile them yourself as they usually interface better with the entire system in general.

In some distros, particularly the non-Ubuntu ones, you may need to reinstall your proprietary video drivers in order to be able to make use of 3D acceleration once again. Please do so.

Other Known Issues:

Sunshafts cannot be enabled in d3d mode: 

This is due to the lack of a certain type of texture support in WINE's direct3d API. It will be corrected in version 1.3.7. Please note that sunshafts is currently non-existent in the OpenGL mode. More info at: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24928

WoW not recognising shader model 3 in OpenGL:

World of Warcraft's OpenGL mode for the Windows client does not support anything higher than shader model 2. Thus, it will not be possible to make use of this.

login crash

This game doesn't work. The blue progress bar gets as far as the R on "Reserved" in "all rights reserved" above it and freezes. So far I've gotten a total of 1 game to work via wine. It seems almost entirely useless to me.

RE Error: Launcher can not run because its skin archive is damaged ...

I am receiving the same error on an x64 linux. Now since I run wine in win32 mode, and seen a load of 'can't find libpng, etc.' errors in wine debug, I thought maybe I needed lib32 stuff?

So the fix for me the fix was to install the lib32 versions of libpng, libjpeg, etc ...
Seems when the launcher can not process some pictures, it will complain with this error.

No screen when using DVI and HDMI

Hi,

when I use both HDMI (as sound output device) and DVI (for graphics) of my Radeon HD 5670 the screen turns off when starting wow.exe.

When I unplug the HDMI sound device everything (except the sound of course ;)) works fine.

Is there any possibility to use the DVI output for graphics and HDMI for sound in wine?

launcher crashes wow

Launcher had been crashing but wasn't paying too much attention because I'd just go to the wow.exe and start playing np. However today's patch by default starts the launcher once the patch is downloaded and crashes. Advice?

Wow crashes when hitting play

When I try to run Wow, the launcher opens perfectly but when I
hit play it crashes... the installation was a local copy from a Windows 7 partition... what I did was copied everything over to my linux partition. Can someone please check the error output and head me on the right direction?

Don't have textures

­I'm using wine 1.3.17. I would like to play with wow, but, when i start the game, I don't see the most of textures, only "clouds". I don't see any character texture(I see every bench, or tree, or house, but not the characters, and NPCs). Similar to Assassin's creed broherhood. I don't see the textures, which the VGA card have to generate. (sorry for the bad english)

if anyone is interested in copying wow folder from windows partition but does not have windows dual boot, here is how i installed winXP dual boot on existing linux machine. I then maintain copies from win partition to linux with rsync -avh . this thanks to the fact that i cannot install wow directly on linux. Link: forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-869599-highlight-.html

I just received the update 1.3.16 and now the Laucher crash few seconds after opening.

By running directly Wow.exe I have no problem, so I can use it for the moment, but this issue can be problematic when the next patch is released (since patches are usually downloaded and installed by the Launcher).

Crash while changing game resolution

I added the bug #26414 where Wine crashes because of a change of resolution in Wine.

I haven't found any clear answer to why it happens yet except it is probably an error within WoW where it tries to read a NULL pointer. Hopefully Wine can be prevented from crashing due to this..

I have been trying to get this to work but it stops downloading fairly soon after start. i have opened the ports and tried them with other bittorrent client and they are open. Anyone else have some advice for installing Cataclysm from Blizzard Downloader?

Error when Patching

When I try to patch the client, a dialog box with the following message pops up:

Cannot find 'C:\users\andrew\Temp\Blizzard Installer Temporary Data - 08ffceb6\patch.html?enUS'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.

The only option is to close the dialog box from the 'x' in the corner, or press OK.

FPS boost patch for wow

For those who have appropriate knowledges to patch wine, here is the patch that adds support for multi-core processors, increasing wow performance to the same level as directX on windows.

ALT TAB CRASH + sound issues

Hi guys

Currently running under:

Ubuntu Mav 10.10 x86-64
Kernel 2.6.35-25-gen
gnome 2.32.0

3 Gig Corsair Ram
GF9800GTX+ 260.19.06
Wine 1.3.13

Like the tittle says the game itself is running great, but i cant alt tab or change desktop without getting the game to freeze ... i have experience that bug in earlier ubuntu distro but that was gone in 9.10, was due to some bug with compiz but this time compiz doesnt seems to affect the problem at all. Anyone got maybe an idea of what could cause this ?

Sounds issues is just that i cant listen to music while playing the game, ((or vent) mumble and skype work great though) each time im lauching the game movie player is closing for some odd reason and/or crashes

64bit OS with more than 4 gigs = crash

I wanted to share a solution (at least so far) to a problem I've had that has gotten worse with Cata.

Apparently, on 64 bit systems with more than 4 gigs of RAM, WoW will crash with an error along the lines of "Not able to allocate xxx amount of RAM". It seems to happen more quickly in graphically complex areas (big cities with lots of objects). It also is made worse by having the graphics settings set higher. This happens not just in Wine, but in Windows as well.

The problem seems to be that WoW, being a 32bit app, is only able to access so much memory, and it runs out of available memory in graphics heavy areas. The solution is to modify the Wow.exe to allow it to be aware of more memory on a 64bit system. There's more to it technically, but that's my understanding of what's going on.

Crash on startup

Hello-

I'm running FreeBSD 8.1 with Wine 1.3.12. I installed WOW without any issues; however, the program seems to crash on launch. The only output from my terminal is:

Wine crash

I am having intermittent crashes while playing WoW. Sometimes in 10-15 minutes, and sometimes after well over and hour or two. It seems to happen at random times, I cannot find a way to reproduce it on the spot.

I am running Wine 1.3.12, 32 bit version on Linux Mint Main Edition 10 64 bit.

Corrupt image World of Warcraft Help plz

Thanks in advance to all of you.

So here is my problem, I upgraded to new version of wine 1.3.11 and ubuntu 10.10 64 bit and since I did that i started to have a very corrupt image in world of warcraft I used to be playable under older version of wine and ubuntu 32 bit,
I just know the basic in the linux world so plz be very detailed on the steps if you have an possible solution to my problem please.

Night Elf Feral Druid Transformations Glitched

I'm using 1.3.11 and everything seems to work fine except for trying to use any of my transformations as a druid. I can press the skill and it shows the ground effects when changing, but my characters image does not change to a cat, or a bird, bear, tiger or seal-thing.

Also, my character moves and acts as if he was IN that form. In other words, if I switch to flight form, my character can fly. If I'm in cat form, I can use feral charge, ravage, etc. It's just showing my character in human form doing all this rather than the correct form.

Launcher and Log in issues

With the current version of wine that I am using 1.2.2 I am having issues where I am not able to use the keyboard to log into the game without closing and opening the program multiple times (works randomly) this was not an issue with wine version 1.2.1 . Also if wow has already been run and close I am not able to reopen the program again through wine without error unless I restart linux. I have tried logging out and back in but with no success only a restart seems to work. Also have had intermittent sound issues where if I move the game window and open another program be in mangler or firefox the sound in the game stops until next pc restart and reload game. This was also not an issue in wine 1.2.1 Otherwise everything works well other then some cutting in the graphics and a lag that lasts about 1 seconds every 10-15 seconds occasionally.

well first of all. If u disable speedstep from BIOS, ur cpu should be allways at max. so if u want to achiev that why u need speedstep at all?

but if u really like to have speedstep on and get 1.8 ghz at startup.
then in ubuntu's case u can add ur script to startup applications.
that should do the trick
or maybe i got u wrong here...

The processes tab of System Resources shows the CPU usage somehow running at 102%, while the resources tab shows the two cores not running at 100% so I am hoping someone can help me make sense of what appears to be conflicting reports?

If relevant it is an Intel Core2Duo EE4300 1.8Ghz.

Is it correct that I do this in Ubuntu's gconf-editor by setting my desktop's apps>gnome-power-manger>cpufreq policy_ac's key value to performance as I read in an Ubuntu guide somewhere, or does it need to be capitalized Performance?

Performance is what I currently have the policy_ac value set to, and I didn't need to create it. The reason I am mentioning this is because $cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies returns no such file or directory, does this mean cpufreq scaling isn't available with my particular processor?

WoW won't run - error message

Hello,

I just switched to a 64 bit CPU from a 32 bit CPU and reinstalled my Arch Linux. WoW worked pretty flawlessly on my 32 bit without me having to do anything, but now it won't run at all.

It launches the Blizzard Downloader just fine and downloads the game, but when I press start I get this error:

"Failed to find a suitable display device. Exiting program."

I have not made any modifications or added any reg keys or anything. I tried it with both Win XP and Win 7 and neither makes a difference.

I have an Nvidia card and I'm running the latest version of the Nvidia drivers. I used to have an Xorg file, created with Nvidia-xconfig, but I deleted it and am now running without one. Xorg.conf or not makes no difference with WoW not working.

I run my wine as a 32bit app, as oppose to 64 bit.

Can anyone help me? I am not sure what to do and no one else here seems to have this error.

There's a Ubuntu ppa repository so you DON'T need to build wine and patch it by yourself.

Do not forget to switch to pulseaudio in wine config. "winecfg" under audio section.

Mic crashes when I'm in Orgrimmar.

I seem to have this problem with my microphone.

Whenever I run through Orgrimmar, the mic immediately stops working. I can be using in-game chat, TeamSpeak, or Skype, but I will lose all ability to capture sound with my mic until I reload my ALSA>

This happens with other things, like running YouTube, but primarily I've noticed that Orgrimmar is the major offender. Otherwise, it will work fine for hours.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

So, I get Wow installed just fine via the online installer, it then auto launches the launcher and downloads updated tools. Once that completes things go to hell. I can't get the Wow client to work nor the Launcher.

Video Card:

Screen is filled with garbage

I am running a up to date Arch Linux x86_64 with wine-1.3.9-1, ATI Radeon HD 5600, xorg 1.9 and fglrx 10.11.

Direct rendering is working and other native games like tuxracer or supertuxcart work fine.

Myself and other users (see bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=109619) are experiencing extreme graphics corruption with WoW: Cataclysm (4.x). Hase anybody seen such a severe graphics error (img27.imageshack.us/img27/5332/screenshotar.jpg) before? Is it working for other people with a similar ATI based setup?

I really hope somebody will shed some light on this issue.

What i got so far

Hi i have been running world of warcraft, in opengl mode for some time now.

However now is the time to get d3d working properly, it seems that i can get shadows working perfectly however i like them set to good.

it also seems that i can get the water to go to fair, no big deal.

however when i set the water to ultra the water disappears unless you are under it.



i had what i thought was mulisampling working at 4x but it seems that my graphics driver was blocking that and was forcing it to be off.

when i set it to let the application decide then i started having problems.

when i was in-game and set the mulisampling to 1x it worked any higher and it would be a blank screen like it did when i tried to force it from the nvidia settings manager.


What i want is 4x or 8x multisampling with ultra water and sunbeams.

wine 1.3.8/ubuntu 10.10 crashes

Having a heck of a time trying to get WoW to rock. Fresh install of OS and apps on an ASUS k52f laptop. i3, intel hd, 4 gigs ram.

Suggested .wtf settings applied from < help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft >

SET ffxDeath "0"
SET ffxGlow "0"

Using < SET gxApi "opengl" > instead of -opengl flag on startup command.

So I start up wine & WoW:

padsp wine "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Launcher.exe"

Launcher is good, downloads and applies patches. When clicking [PLAY] wine pukes an error, Launcher.exe has encountered a serious error.

Terminal output:

Can't figure out what to do, but it seems to be a wine/pulseaudio problem. Have tried selecting oss in winecfg and prefixing padsp. Toggled various OS's in winecfg. Have also tried and removed the suggested regedit from the ubuntu WoW help link above. Toggled different combinations of audio and video settings in WoW. Sound does work when using the padsp prefix.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Crash: Unhandled exception when starting WoW

Since WoW is running perfectly well on my desktop box on Ubuntu 10.04 with Wine 1.3.8, I copied the whole game folder over to my recently aquired notebook to give it a try. It doesn’t work, of course.

When I run wow.exe with Wine, I get the following console output:

The wow.exe process then quickly climbs up to 100% CPU usage and stays there. Nothing else happens. I have to kill the process manually.

The following I already tried to fix the problem:
Wine 1.2.1 and Wine 1.3.8 from the Maverick repositories.

Setting kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 0
Deleting the config.wtf, in case something in there might cause the crashes.
Starting with and without -opengl parameter.

I really need help here. Is there anything else I could do to make WoW behave?
The launcher works fine, by the way. Only the game itself doesn’t.

My wow install is a recent backup of an XP install ( WTF & Interface folders deleted) which I pasted into wine 's "Program Files". I ran the REPAIR.EXE under Wine successfuly, then updated through launcher.

Here's about my first tries to run WoW under Linux / wine.
I read a few turials before, but I might have forgotten crucial thingies.

The crash occurred right after authentication.

Installation error

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and wine 1.2.1 although I have tried 1.3.5 as well and still get the same issue.

The installation screen comes up and when I press install I get program error "The program WoW-4.0.0-WOW-enGB-installer.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close"

I have been hunting around for a solution and cannot seem to find one.

I am very new to Ubuntu and loving it, but any help with this would be appreciated.

intel 945 dual-tmu error

I've got a laptop with intel 945 graphics that ran wow reasonably well under wine before the 4.0.x patches. Now that I've installed them, the loading screen works fine, the character selection screen works fine, but when the world loading screen bar finishes the game crashes.

I found that if i *re-enable* pixel shaders and vertex shading in winecfg, the game will load, but the frame rate is unusable even for auction house and the like; it runs at about 0.5 fps in most places.

This is all under d3d. If I attempt to run the game under opengl (which has never worked well on this hardware), I now get an error that I must install graphics hardware with "dual-tmu support". This is a laptop so obviously, that's impossible.

Did something happen that made vertex shading/pixel shaders mandatory in the newest patches under d3d, and if so is there a way to disable it? As I said, I got usable (15-20) fps before under d3d on this machine. All graphics settings are at minimum, all the usual workarounds (ffxglow 0 etc) have been applied.

Error 132, aka 'my huur-duur moment'

I just spent the last week trying to get this figured out. Everything graphics-wise seemed to be working fine on a fresh install of Ubuntu Lucid and I appeared to be using the correct driver (I have an nvidia 220 M). I tried everything under the sun, from updating to the latest wine beta to trying a bunch of different things with winetricks to upgrading/downgrading my kernel.

I finally got a clue when I tried running two 3d-accelerated programs at once and suddenly both of my cores went to 95% usage. I poked around nvidia-settings a bit and realized I was using a two year old driver. I have no idea *how* that happened as that version of the driver doesn't even seem to be in the Ubuntu repos any more, but eh. Updated to the latest (had to manually remove the old driver as well) and WoW (copied from a windows install) now runs flawlessly (wine 1.3.8, all defaults, with -opengl). Moral of the story: that *bold text* in the instructions saying to make sure your drivers are up to date is probably the best advice to follow if you are having this error and are using an nvidia graphics card XD

New wine/kernel - Eastern Kingdoms inaccessible.

Every single time now that any of my characters enter the Eastern Kingdoms continent, I get disconnected from the server. This happens when I create a new character that starts there, enter on a boat or zepplin, or try to connect on a character that logged out there. I get the loading bar, then the server kicks me. I've even deleted the Interface folder and WTF folder, cleared the cache completely, even run the Repair tool, and nothing helps. I connect to these characters on my Mac laptop, and everything's fine.

This has only been happening since the most recent patch that put in all the game geography changes.

OS: Fedora 14 (kernel 2.6.35.6), Xorg 1.9.1.
Wine 1.3.7, using Nvidia driver 256.53.

WoW Crash on Login

So, I've been trying to get WoW to work and I've come so far so I get to the login screen.
But when I try to login it gives me and instant crash.

If you get an error logging, be sure to have lib32-libldap (the 32bits version of openldap) installed in /usr/lib32.

Random Annoyances

I am running Wow 4.0.3 on Linux Mint 9 using Wine 1.2.1 I use PlayonLinux to manage Wine versions, and I have used up to 1.3.7, which I think is the most current version. Usually, it'll run OK. But I have run across several problems.

1. Logging on: When I log on, sometimes the computer will become completely non responsive. The cursor moves, bot the sound stops, no buttons can be pushed, and keyboard shortcuts don't work. This happens only after I enter my login information and press enter. The only way around this is to reset my computer.

2. Disconnection: getting DC'd is a common problem. When I ran WoW under Windows, it happened. Now, however, when I get DC'd, instead of returning to the login screen with the disconnect error message, I stay in the game until I minimize it and kill that process.

3. Minimizing: The problem lies not with the minimizing, but with getting back into the game after I use my web browser or something. I think I fixed it by running Windowed(maximized), and just switching desktops, but I haven't tried that extensively. In any case, the first 2 problems are much more annoying.

4. FPS: Every so often, I will get a huge drop in frame rate, stay that way for a few seconds or so, and go back to normal. This is independent of being in high-lag areas like Dalaran or major population centers. I used the MaxFPS tip found below, but again I haven't tested it thoroughly yet. May just be a hardware issue (see below).

If anyone has any information on any item, it will be appreciated. I am new to Linux, so I am still learning. I am hoping to get WoW running at least as well in Linux as on Windows.

Lost connection to Updater

Since 4.0.3, I've been having problems with the Launcher. It'll patch, but when it gets to applying the patch, it'll time out and I'll get a message saying "Lost connection to the Updater."

Computer having issues: slackware 13.1, wine 1.3.37, kernel 2.6.36-rc7

Computer able to patch without issues: slackware 12.2, wine 1.3.34, kernel 2.6.27.7

Switching workspaces resized WoW

First, everything worked perfectly under Fedora 11, but yesterday I updated to Fedora 14 and now something is very funny with the graphics support.

The problem: I run WoW at full-screen mode at 2560x1600 (same resolution as my desktop). Now when I switch desktops in Gnome (Control-Alt-Arrow) and come back, I can only see the game in the middle 2048x1280 or so. It's a viewport into the game, not a full resize, so some of the game window is no longer visible. Instead, the desktop is visible around it (and I can even interact with it). The game thinks it's still running at 2560x1600. Any thoughts?

Also, it looks like the hardware cursor isn't working right -- it's a grey outline in the shape that the cursor should be. Everything works, it just doesn't look like the details of the cursor are being drawn.

System: Fedora 14, kernel 2.6.35.6 (stock Fedora), nvidia driver 256.35 and 260.19 (tried both). This happens both on the wine 1.3.3 binaries that worked fine under F11, as well as the wine 1.3.7 binaries that come with F14.

Tech support in WoW seems baffled, I am at least.
Done everything next to debugging.

Graphic issues NVidia at specific situations

At a few points I have noticed a few things that no longer seem to work, or require different parameters to make them work:

I use the latest NVidia drivers and run the game in OpenGL with wine-1.3.7 on Slackware Linux 13.1 64-bits, multilib.

- Underwater: I got a 'starry' sky. When I set the water redering to low, I could see under water again. (good enough solution for now for me)
- When flying to the north from Argent Tournament grounds at some point the world does not render, all I see is a "black hole in the clouds" (a blackish circle with cloud-white in the corners. No solution found yet.
- When prophet Tharon'Ja turns you in an undead I get the same issue as above where I have no solution yet.

New patch

Version 4.0.3 is out, by the by.

Tried a new version, splashed out time on a whole new Ubuntu 10.04 (not going to .10 just yet), new wine, new Warcraft installation. After several attempts, couldn't get it to install under any distribution of wine, other than from the downloader.

Copied it from my windows PC, after it installed flawlessly.

Running Launcher.exe generates the "Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" fixme. Running WoW.exe generates no such error, but further down the line gives a slew of errors coming out (wine 1.3.7). Seems to work with wine 1.2 however, still.

Will be playing with it today while on the phone, seeing if there's a more recent wine that likes the new game patch

Login Crash at "Success"

So I've been running WoW fine for months now. Not sure if there was a mini-patch or something, but yesterday, it just stopped. Went overnight from "platinum" to "gold" (the graphics settings in opengl bug me), to "silver" - after logging in there's a problem now.

It gets to "Success", then comes up with an exceptionally helpful error dialogue with no information on it. I have a bug entry from the terminal, but not sure where to put it. Only one time have I had any other info on it - it came up with a 0xC0000005 error.

Error: Launcher can not run because its skin archive is damaged please run repair. (SOLVED)

(This is all on Gentoo Linux, though it MAY apply to other distros.)

After updating to Wine 1.3.6, I got the following error after running Launcher.exe and then (AFAIK) proceeding to the WoW page *before* letting Launcher complete the "Installing minor updates" (or whatever).

The NEXT time I ran Launcher, I got the following error:

"Launcher can not run because its skin archive is damaged please run repair."

So, I ran Repair. No joy.

(Gentoo specific)
Ultimately, I re-ran the "emerge -uvND world" to update all the packages and ran across issues with the "openldap" package that required resolution using the "revdep-rebuild" tool. Even then, I was still getting the error.

So I downgraded to Wine 1.3.4 and poof! the problem went away!

I also let Launcher finish applying other updates this time, though this was (apparently) separate from the initial issue.

TAKEAWAY
Using Wine 1.3.6 on Gentoo (or possibly on other distros) seems to cause a regression or trigger a new bug. I have seen posts from other users running Windows *natively* and Blizzard has not provided a comprehensive solution for them either.

Wine 1.3.4 works, and I have not tried either (unstable) 1.3.5 (which is the latest version in the Portage tree as of 2010-10-30) or the (stable) 1.2.1.

Launcher graphical issue

this is an old bug I think buto someone know hot to render WoW Launcher's option pages? if I select "Game Option" or "Launcher Option" the window is all gray and the only way to go back is to press Esc button. Instead if I select Connection info all is fine...

4.0 System Requirements

I haven't found any system requirements for WoW Cataclysm, because Blizzard hasn't released them, but here are my results for the recent 3.3.x to 4.0.x patch.

On my Compaq 2.4 Ghz single-core desktop with 2 GB ram and Intel graphics: Download and install worked flawlessly, then told me my video card is not longer supported.

On my Toshiba 1.4 Ghz single-core laptop with 1.2 GB ram and an ATI Radeon card and a 40 GB hard drive. After reinstalling linux (Kubuntu 10.04) and removing a few programs, I installed the 3.01 full client. Then I had to open Wow.exe directly or transfer the incremental patches to the WoW folder. The launcher will try to patch directly from 3.01 to 4.0.x which DOESN'T WORK. I then moved the contents of the Update folder from my other drive to save downloading the 4.76 GB patch. The system checks the files, then installs. My computer stalls around 38% and the screen behind the updater goes black. Then it chugs along (I believe its because of the RAM and only 1 GB of swap. I am still awaiting the result!

I'm not sure at this point, if WoW can be crammed onto a 40 GB drive because of the extra space needed for temp files. Use Filelight to find unneeded old patches and temp files. The worst offenders are all patches below 3.3.5, the contents of the Windows Tmp and Users/"User_Name"/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files folder. I believe you can save 5-15 GB by eliminating them, but be careful. MPQ files and the contents of the Updates folder need to be saved for the upgrade. I hope this helps those trying to upgrade on a shoestring. Personally, I may be a few hours away from switching MMO's to Planeshift or Runescape. Good luck!

WoW hangs and freezes

Few weeks ago I've installed ArchLinux x86_64, KDE 4.5.2 and Wine 1.3.3.
After that I started to get freezes on Cataclysm beta. Sometimes it freezes only for 15-20 seconds, sometimes it just hangs forever. Sometimes I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 and kill WoW.exe to get back control of my system. Sometimes no keystrokes work and I have to use Reset.
Usually it happens after playing for a while, but it can repeat very often once started, even after rebooting the system.
There is nothing special in wine log, and no lines appear during these freezes.

This also happens in LXDE, but it never hangs forever, only freezes for few seconds.

If anyone knows what can cause such issues, I would be very glad to hear any advices, cuz its really annoying to get such freeze when u're healing heroic instance :P

Kernel cause of login problems?

Had the log on problem after patching on both my linux boxes (PCLinuxOS 2010) and changed the kernel from 2.6.33.7 back to 2.6.32.24 and it that fixed it on both boxes.

2nd box was a fresh install of PCLinuxOS 2010.10, fresh Wine (1.2.1) - crashed on default kernel but fine on 2.6.32.24 no other changes

Anti-Aliasing with ATI

Hello,

Im having problems to get Anti-Aliasing working with WoW in OpenGL and also in Directx mode.
-I used regitry tweak multisampling=enabled
-tried to force different settings from catalyst
-used the AA settings from WoW settings

Nothing works, still ugly edges on textures :(

im using ubuntu 10.10, Catalyst 10.10 beta.

Does anyone else have the same issue or is there way to get them working somehow?

For example Amnesia: Dark Descent (native linux game) runs nicely with maximum AA, either from catalyst enabled or ingame..

Other than that WoW runs really nice in OpenGL mode..just need new Water effects and shadows now.

Hello! Can I fine with the comfort of playing with video ATI HD 4670 (proprietary driver installed system ubuntu 10.10 x64) as well as the NVIDIA cards? I would like to hear comments of people who play on ATI in this game.

I have recently updated Wine to 1.3.4
i am running ubuntu 10.4
NVIDIA driver 260.19.12

I am unsure if this is a Wine or WOW or Ubuntu/linux error.

I have been researching this subject for months and cannot find a fix

I will be at different parts of the game. in different zones. or whatever. it will happen occasionally after i was recently killed. or on a zone in or zone out of instance

things i have done to correct this problem

Reinstalled ubuntu 10.8 (i think it was the newest beta)

Now when this error occurs is usually on a texture or a map. or a piece of armour or something like that.

Now there is other files and things that will do it. it will happen in mulgore. and crash on a texture file from the map.

when i was installing wine the last time i was reading that there was some memory management thing that ubuntu uses to handle virtual memory. if you go to places that are populated enough. it will load to much stuff to memory and you will get an error that is almost the same as this. but on a different file in the game. For the life of me i cannot find this post. or this guide on how to change this. or even what its called.

If this error has been reported in a different place and resolved with a fix hack whatever, could i please get a link to it. and if that is the case i am sorry for posting here again.

Beware of CPU frequency scaling

It appears that the CPU frequency scaling governor "OnDemand" is not optimal for WoW, or at least not on Ubuntu 10.10. Forcing all cores to run at max speed I managed to increase FPS from roughly 14 to 20 in crowded areas in Dalaran.
FPS is still very low, but at least it's slightly more pleasant.

No window refresh on unminimize

After getting WoW reinstalled it seems to be running pretty well, except for a graphics/video problem.
When I go from minimized to unminimized the window doesn't seem to refresh, the border & titlebar are there, but the desktop & other windows behind it are all that's visable. The cursor changes and responds to where mailboxes, npcs, etc. should be, so I know the window isn't frozen.

My system:
Ubuntu 10.04
Wine v1.1.42
ATI Radeon HD 4200
4G DDR2 ram
AMD Athlon 2 x4

Login issues

Everything worked fine until this latest 4.0.1 patch, I downloaded and updated my installation in windows and whenever I run the game in linux everything starts fine, the launcher seems okay, it even downloads the 'Breaking News' on the left pane but when I enter my information and click Login I get "There was an error logging in. Please try again later. If the problem persists, please contact Technical Support at:..." error message, and everything works 100% in windows, so it isn't an issue with my network. Is anyone else experiencing this or have any ideas of where to start troubleshooting this?

Launcher Requires Write Permission

Last night when I logged in Wow started downloading the patch it said it had 5 hours so I let it run while I slept. I woke up to an error "Launcher requires write permission to the E:\World of Warcraft\ directory to successfully patch the game. Please enable write access to the directory using an administrator account."
I found this as in issue in an old patch, the resolution was to run BKGND-downloader.exe from the wow folder. BKGND-downloader.exe checks the local data then exits with a message that tells me that wow.exe is up to date.
Running wow.exe it logs into the downloading screen then crashes.

Some help anyone?

Game not even trying to connect

I can not login with a completely copied World of Warcraft installation (from a working installation on Windows XP). Because the updater would simply refuse to download anything (even with port 3724 forwarded in router), I let the windows install patch itself and copied the result.

On windows, I see the blue Icecrown start screen and I can login and play

On linux, I see the new Cataclysm start screen (Is this even supposed to happen, nearly two month before release?). When I try to login, there is immediately the message "Your connection to the server has been cancelled" (translation by me, german message is "Ihre Verbindung zum Server wurde unterbrochen".

I don't know the difference between the two installations, except for wine behaviour. This is wine 1.2 on kernel 2.6.34. Does anyone have similar issues? What can I do about it?

Blizzard Updater is failing....

How long does Preparing to install take?

I've downloaded the 5.3gb patch (EU here) and attempting to install it seems to stick on the "Preparing to install" part, I've tried it with the newest and previous versions of wine and I'm running ubuntu. I'm also not using a firewall.

When I look in my WoW folder it seems to have created a few misc temporary files but that's about it.

My question is: How long did it take you guys on that section, just so I know if I've got a problem or it takes a ridiculous amount of time. Thanks all.

4.0.1 Randomly Crashes

I can launch WoW and successfully login, however once I actually select my character and enter the game anywhere from immediately to about 5 minutes in I get a dialogue box saying: "The program Wow.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close wine." As well as instructions to come here etc. Thats all the error output I get, and the crashes dont seem to be related in any way except for that.

I don't really use Wine for anything except for WoW, so I'm not really familiar with its error outputs or anything.

WoW 4 now depends on OpenGL 2.0+

I've been playing WoW for years on my, now ancient, IBM T42 using a Radeon mobility 9600. The ubuntu 10.10 OSS ati drivers with modesetting disabled only support OpenGL 1.5. (on Mesa 7.9-devel).

Wow starts with and old (not quite correct) error.

"Please install a 3D accelerator card with dual-TMU support"

Checking the gx.log I notice failures on OpenGL checks:

4.0.0 patch problems

The new patch that was released yesterday (October 12th) has broken WoW. The launcher starts up, but then locks up and I have to go kill it from the terminal. If I start WoW directly through Wow.exe, it will launch the game, but when I log in it tries to download another update (probably the updated tools), but then it crashes with:

ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0073:00732DE4

The instruction at "0x00732DE4" referenced memory at "0x0000012D".
The memory could not be "read".

This issue happens whether I tell wine to act as Windows XP or Windows 7, and the memory addresses are the same. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with Wine 1.3.4. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone get it fixed?

WoW doesn't recognize my video card

I have nVidia 8600, latest drivers, wine 1.3.4
Changing WoW video settings, I see that it doesn't actually recognize my video card. The "predefined settings" bar is all red, with lowest settings available.
I can set most things to high, but certain features that require Shader 3.0 are greyed out.
glxinfo direct rendering is on, lspxi shows card as 10de:0400
I have d3dx9 libs 24-42 native.

I've been googling around for a while, can't find an answer, it's probably something obvious, but it's hard being a noob.

Upgrade to 4.0 using offline patch?

What I've done in the past was download the patches manually (esp helps if you go from 3.0 fresh install to 3.3.5) and run them by hand.
I decided to do the same thing now, and downloaded the 3.3.x to 4.0 patch by hand from a mirror.
The problem is...I can't update anything.
Background Downloaded.exe sits for half a minute and says "No new patch data is available", and Launcher.exe plain says "Update Failed".

Does anyone know a solution to this, other than downloading the patch through torrent?

Can anyone else confirm whether or not the OpenGL under water crash bug in FullScreenGlow was fixed? It appears to no longer be an issue for me with my Nvidia card.

If anyone else still has this problem, I will edit the notes again and put back the text warning of the crash.

PTR crashes on startup

When I try and launch it, the launcher works, but WoW.exe crashes referring to .\W32\Locale.cpp. The error is error 134 (0x85100086) Fatal Condition.

Anyone got the PTR-version of Cata to work? The launcher freezes after a couple of seconds while downloading updated tools, telling me it lost connection to the updater.

He says the full-screen glow-effect also makes WoW beta crash under Win7 under water in OpenGL mode. This is "good" news, as it will probably be fixed by Blizzard at some point.

mir ist aufgefallen das in der cataclysm beta das tauchen zu einem crash im client führt.
um den fehler zu reproduzieren muss man die wow-beta im opengl-mode starten, dann die vollbildleuchteffecte einschalten, und dann mit seinem char unter wasser tauchen :-) zack bumm crash.

folglich ist dieses zwar kein wine/linux bugg sondern einzig und allein ein blizz bug

die installation unter wine konnte mir einfach noch nicht glücken :-)
aber unter windows installiert und ordner dann nach linux kopiert kann man priema spielen

mit einer ausnahme
man darf nicht tauchen
in dem momment wo der kopf unter wasser geht crasht der client :-(

Today, Blizzard give me the possibility to play the bêta. Sa, i can't install it on my Ubuntu 10.04. This is what said my shell :
