What works

The game runs extremely well with its dependencies installed (listed under extra comments). It's playable for economics and trade but not the best for combat.

  • Installation
  • Launcher and Patching
  • Starting and playing the game.

What does not

  • Mouse escapes window (bug 6971)
  • Models aren't attached correctly (bug 6955)
  • Background music doesn't play
  • Changing controls (settings) is buggy and can cause random controls to take over

What was not tested
Extended gameplay and combat.

Additional Comments

Requires wininet, ie6 and vcrun2008 to run (can be installed through winetricks).

Model Glitch

The model glitch can be fixed with the vertex_blend_sw-1.1.44 patch (http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=28205).

Works with Wine 1.2 but can degrade performance in heavily populated areas (on slow machines).

HOWTO - Easily Install Face of Mankind & Requirements

Before starting you will most likely want to backup your Wine directory by renaming it.

mv ~/.wine ~/winebackup

Before installing FOM via Wine: run winetricks from a terminal and use the following command;

winetricks d3dx9 directmusic directplay wininet ie6 vcrun2008 dinput8 ddr=opengl multisampling=disabled orm=backbuffer mwo=enabled

Alternatively run winetricks and use the interface to manually select what you want - take note that everything above is recommended for FOM; d3dx9, dinput8, vcrun2008 and wininet are requirements.

Now run the FOM installer like you would any other Wine application.

When FOM has installed run it and perform a complete check. You can now either click Start to patch through the launcher or you can quit the launcher and extract the any patches from your Windows installation to ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files/Face of Mankind/PatchTmp/Download". If you go with the latter run the launcher again and the patches will be installed without downloading.

Mouse Cursor Issue

Until bug 6971 is fixed you can improve the gameplay by setting mouse sensitivity and mouse smoothing to their maximum level (ingame). This stops the cursor leaving the window quickly. You can also re-centre the mouse by tapping LEFT-CTRL (which toggles the menu).

Another suggestion (not tried) is to turn on virtual desktop in winecfg.

You may need to install urlmon if you get an immediate error when loading the launcher. With winetricks:

winetricks urlmon

Launcher Issues

The launcher can download patches after installing wininet. You can also fix the launcher patch notes rendering by installing IE6 (not IE7).

Both IE6 and wininet can be easily be downloaded and installed done through winetricks.
