HotS crash when completing bonus objective

Until bug 8060 is resolved, completing any bonus objective in the HotS campaign can cause a crash.

The work-around is to install corefonts:

winetricks corefonts

Installation problems

To successfully install from the DVD you may have to use the "unhide" option. Example:

# mount -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

If you are still unable to install directly from the DVD, you can try

  • copying the files from the DVD to a hard disk first
  • using the downloadable installer instead

Kernel problems

You may encounter crashes before the loading screen or after login, with Blizzard crash reporter errors like this:


Linux users should upgrade the kernel to 2.6.35 or later. FreeBSD users should upgrade to 8.1 or later. This issue is discussed in the following bug reports:

Regedit video performance tweaks

Some users report that the following registry edits can increase video performance. Some users report that these changes make no difference, and some even report that they make things worse! Feel free to experiment....

  1. Access the registry: wine regedit
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D. If this key does not exist, create it.
  3. Right click on Direct3D, and select New > String Value to add each of the entries below.

Updater problems

If the updater crashes, you can try one of the following:

  • install ie6 via winetricks
  • start winecfg, go to DLL overrides, add "mshtml" and set it to "native"

Fix crashes in zeratul missions or with custom maps

If you experience crashes in the "Zeratul Missions" or with custom maps like SOTIS, you can try installing corefonts and the Visual C++ 2005 libraries:

Ubuntu problems with ptrace

With Ubuntu 12.04 and some versions of the linux kernel, pthread protection causes SCII to crash immediately upon start or after login. To fix this, enter the following command to temporarily disable pthread protection:

echo 0 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

pthread protection will be re-enabled upon reboot. To re-enable pthread protection manually, enter the following command:

echo 1 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

sound stuttering

my sound is stuttering in Starcraft 2, strangely only ingame, in the launcher it works fine... I'm using wine 1.7.16 with newest SC2 version. Everything else seems to work fine. Is there sth I can do?

Arch64/32 Bit Problems with CSMT

I just can't get the CSMT-Wine version to work. Everything else works... "well", but when I try the 1.7.10-CSMT or 1.7.4-CSMT (precompiled) it shows the b-net-launcher window for about 3 seconds till it crashes.

Even with everything on low I have just about 20-30fps.

A HOW-TO for FGLRX users!

I've read about a lot of people struggling with fglrx problems, but I've managed to get great performance for starcraft with fglrx with no bugs/glitches (as far as I've tested). So I thought I'd post a HOW-TO for people who want to run their AMD video hardware with the fglrx drivers. Here's what I did:

Install Opensuse 13.1 (make sure you choose the default KDE desktop).

Install all Opensuse 13.1 updates through the update manager.

Install 7zip through the add/remove software link in the launcher.

Install libpulse032bit the same way (just search for pulseaudio). If you don't install this, you will have no sound!

Installing libpulse032bit will automatically install the 32 bit alsa libs you will need as well.

search the opensuse website (or for 'one click install fglrx opensuse'. This will take you to the one click installation page for the fglrx drivers. Of course select the 13.1 driver package and install. It suggests 2 repos to be added, but only one selected, so I selected the other repo too. I don't know if that makes a difference. You'll want to restart after installation of the drivers to allow them to start.

The same way as above, search for one click installation of playonlinux for Opensuse 13.1. I used the 4.2.2 version of Playonlinux. I don't mess with the repo settings suggested on this one.

Once in PlayOnLinux I don't use the script to install it, but you can if you want. I just keep a copy of SC2 installed on a flash drive and copy the folder over (within the program file of the virtual c drive that I create through playonlinux). It saves me the update process when I distro hop. I can confirm that it will install though, I've tested it.

VERY important point though is that you need to click 'tools', 'manage wine versions', and install 32-bit wine 1.7.4 - CSMT (1.7.10 - CSMT has regressions for me) and use that on your playonlinux drive for SC2. Also that drive will need vcrun2005, but you don't have to worry about that one if you used the script to install, it installs vcrun2005 for you. Then configure your playonlinux SC2 drive to use the 1.7.4 CSMT wine version.

I've used this on both my AMD FX-4350 system with an AMD 6670 video card AND my HP dv6z-6c00 laptop that has an AMD 3550mx llano chip with an added 7690M (6750M) DDR5 discrete video card. Both machines are working flawlessly for me, including voice chat and all (That's quit a feat with my custom ordered laptop specs, plus I do have a boost of performance from the discrete card. I've tweaked with it and can verify that the discrete card is working).

Maybe I'm lucky or I have 'just the right' video cards, but it all works great for me. I hope this helps someone else get their rig running the way they want it. If you have a beefier card, like a 6850 or above, try out the r600g driver (built into the kernel). It may not have the same performance as the prop, but you're already on linux, might as well fully support Free Software (as much as you can).

Latest patch and wine 1.7.11 crash on display FPS

Am I the only one or with latest patch and wine 1.7.11 if you press "Ctrl+Alt+F" to show FPS the buffer screen gets corrupted and the game crashes?

Can you please confirm?

patcher doesn't work when installed to ntfs-volume

I tried installing SC2 to the ntfs formatted volume I use for data storage.
The first installation runs without problems, but when I exit the patcher and start it again, I get an Error saying something like "unable to change permissions of important file. Please log in as Administrator".
Installing it on an ext4-volume works fine.

Any ideas, how I could get it working on ntfs? Is this a bug, I should report?

SC2 OpenGL strings

Mind you, Starcraft 2.exe only chainloads Support/SC2Switcher.exe, as Starcraft 2.exe is basically the launcher.

SC2Switcher.exe however seems to chainload Versions/Base*/SC2.exe the REAL binary.

Running strings on that 19 MiB binary doesn't yield much hope however, just some translation strings.

Once the LOADING is complete, it crashes.

Starting a map from Galaxy Editor works fine, however.

Updater hanging

I managed to install SC2 from the DVD on Debian. It appeared to actually download the first patch, but then said it was "updating the updater" and wouldn't continue. Every time I restart it now, it says it's applying patch 1 of 24 and that there are 0 kb remaining but then pops up saying it's checking for updates and gets stuck there.

I checked a couple of things that fixed similar problems for others. I do have libasound2:i386 and libjpeg8:i386. (I'm on a 64-bit OS.) I installed IE6 using Winetricks. I tried downloading the patches using a Bittorrent client but that didn't help. (Also, it only downloaded about 8 megs. All the patches are around 14 gigs.)

I'm not finding any more solutions. Anyone have any more ideas? I'm getting withdrawals.

I just installed starcraft on wine 1.7.1. I remember it used to work, but now, sometimes I can login, and sometimes I can't (with the error: cannot connect to Even when I login, The matchmaking screen doesn't fully load and custom games crashes! Am I missing something that I should've installed?

Since submitting the "garbage" report, I have done a significantly larger amount of testing to no avail. After testing all sorts of combinations of clean 32-bit and 64-bit WINE prefixes with and without various winetricks overrides, I sought others to reproduce my issue. Two other people running ~testing Gentoo amd64 (I'm on ~testing) were able to get SC2 installed on a clean 64 bit prefix using a method I exactly reproduced, but to no avail. Furthermore, they confirmed we had comparable USE flags for WINE. Glancing at console output would very tentatively suggest the issue is net-related, but I cannot ascertain what. I have exhausted my personal ability to attempt fix the issue, so if any of you have any ideas, I am open to suggestions.

Failed to run a required program (BLIZZARD SETUP) Error code: BLZPTS0000J

I have been surfing forums for weeks, trying to solve this problem. I've installed several versions of wine, including the recommended (for WOL) 1.5.10. x86, through playonlinux.

I always receive this error. I have gone through playonlinux's game list, and installed it from there, and also used the option to install a file from another directory. I install the game from cd, and it goes well until i'm ready to update, it goes to 100% and then shows this. I've installed the ie6 package, the dotnet40 package, and i had 2 seperate virtual drives WITH AND WITHOUT the plugin mono.
and the DLL overrides in winecfg (set to WIN XP):
dnsapi (bullitin)
mshtml (native)

before i added those though, i noticed another mshtml (native, bullitin). should i remove that one? ok, continuing.

i had tested on one virtual drive where i manually browsed for the cd's installation, and another drive where i went into the gametab on playonlinux, and found starcraft. the manual way made sound problems for me, and the video would skip too fast in the installation window. i'm sure that can be fixed, but the other way did not create any installation problems. both arrive at the problem in the subject of this post. there's a link for the error code:

i've tried running S2Switcher from the support folder. I can't find the agent.exe anywhere in the recommended locations in other forum posts. ( wine .wine/drive_c/users/Public/Application\ Data/ --nohttpauth )

i've tried installing it from the installation file available at, and i receive a different error, before installation even begins:
"No installer data could be found. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support."
i ignored the installer from method from here, because i felt one step closer just using the cd, with a full installation. the problem after i install with the cd, is the updater.

downloader was stuck at 0 % not doing anything...

Well this is because the downloader is creating 10gb worth of files on your disk, so at first it will act slow and sluggish....

WAIT a while

open system monitor and look at the cpu tab and we need to kill a few running processes... im on ubuntu you can open it by running gnome-system-monitor in terminal

there were a few processes running that i pretty much closed the ones that looked like they were opened by the launcher EXCEPT agent.exe, blizzard-launcher.exe, wineserver , and explorer.exe services.exe ...

I closed stuff like rundll.exe nc.exe winedevice.exe plugplay.exe , there was some weird KDEsomething.exe , which is weird I dont use KDE.. There was one specific one I cant remember the name of but it was probably the reason why it worked, it had a weid name like kublow.exe or something, after i closed these the installer started to progress, and im installing it now .. hope this helps someone

Newer 1.5 and 1.6 releases don't work

The newer 1.5 and 1.6 releases don't work (at least with an Nvidia GPU).

Like the reporter below, I get horrible freezing in offline and multiplayer. The game will freeze for a few seconds (anywhere from a second to 10-20 seconds).

The updater breaks 1.4 and now 1.5 and 1.6 don't work.

Pausing in HOTS Campaign game

I played through the Wings of Liberty campaign a year ago without any problem. Performance was normal.

I just loaded HOTS and the first few missions had pauses that lasted 5 to 10 seconds and then the game would play normally for a few minutes. On the third mission, I get pauses of 5 to 10 seconds every 5 to 10 seconds making the game unplayable. If I load a 1 vs AI game performance is fine so it seems related to just the campaign portion.

I've tried setting all graphical settings to low. Doesn't help. Any ideas?

Blizzard Downloader doesnt do anything

Hey guys,

I'm trying to install HotS via the downloader.

The Blizzard Launcher lunches fine, does some updating/checking stuff, and I get to the installation splash screen. I select the directory and click install, and nothing happens. The progress stays at 0.0%, and if I click on the options in the top left, the downloader preferences are greyed out. Same for info>connection information.

Same sort of problem with D3 installer as well, where the launcher seems to run fine except for the not downloading anything part.

Massive Performance Boost (Nvidia)

I installed the game with no problems, but found it nearly unplayable from low fps. I was running at about 9-18 fps before this fix. Now I'm running at 60 fps consistently.

For me, the problem was that wine wasn't causing my nvidia gpu to adjust it's clock speed. To solve this problem, the nvidia driver needs to be set to maximum performance. This can be done in two ways.

1.) Run your Nvidia X Server Settings program and under your GPU (GPU 0 for me) select PowerMizer. You'll see a drop menu at the bottom. By default, it's set to adaptive. Change this to "Prefer Maximum Performance." This setting will only be effective during your current x server session.

2.) Force your driver to always run your GPU at maximum performance. Note that this method will reduce battery life for laptops. To do this open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf with your text editor of choice. Make sure you do so with root permissions. Under the section titled "Device" you will need to add the following line:

Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x1"

Make sure that there is a space after each semicolon.

This is the method that worked to increase my performance. I don't promise the same results to anyone else. If you have an nvidia gpu and are experiencing difficulties with your performance in game then it might be worth a shot.

I can only verify that this is a Starcraft 2 problem. I can't confirm whether or not performance will jump in other games.

Graphics Performance tweak

Hi guys,

Been lurking mostly in this forums for getting SC2 to work.

Tried something with excellent results, and thought I'll register and post something that could help!

My settings is the same as what stated here. I am using Wine 1.2.3 on Debian Squeeze (probably an outdated dinosaur by now).

I would like to suggest that under the Direct3D key in the registry.
Add 2 DWORD values:

These are also under the Useful Registry Keys section of the wiki here.

Input the ID of both your Device and Vendor. It really helps to improve the performance.

I am using i5 and a Nvidia GTX 550 Ti.

SC2 initially tells me that my recommended settings are to be low.

But after doing this in addition to the other registry key settings, they are now recommended at Extreme =)

Hope it helps everyone. =)

(Do note that it can run on Extreme, just that during certain battles of 200 supplies the FPS might drop drastically, so I run them on High)

GLSL support for performance but with lighting bug

hi everyone,

I'm using i7-3520M, kernel 3.8.4, Debian Sid, Mesa 8.0.5.

I found enabling GLSL support improves my fps, getting around 20 fps during late game with swarm hosts and lots of lings. Without GLSL support, it dropped under 10 and is nearly impossible to micro.

However, as dza mentioned before, GLSL support causes lights emitted from scv, tech labs and protoss building in constructions flicker in the whole screen.

Some windows users with ATI cards suffers the same problem, but seems to be able to solve this with driver cleanup/reinstall/update:

Is it possible it's a bug in the mesa driver? or just the GLSL support of wine?

Getting SC2 to run using open source r600g radeon drivers

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04, but I used the server install dvd to eliminate some unneeded packages. I ran into problems trying to run SC2 using the free r600g drivers.

I got this error while trying to launch SC2:
"wine libGL error: failed to load driver: r600"

running with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose gave me this:
"dlopen /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/ failed"

The problem is that we are missing some 32-bit libraries. To solve this problem, run:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs-multiarch

The next problem was missing textures and missing portrait pictures. The problem is that we are missing the 32-bit st3c libraries. To fix this, run:

sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

Installing these libraries fixed all my problems!

StarCraft II suddenly stopped working

StarCraft II was working fine on Wine version around 1.5.20 with Nvidia graphics.

I upgraded Wine to 1.5.26 and Nvidia driver to 313.26, and now StarCraft II no longer works.

Reverting to previous versions now also fails. StartCraft II will begin to load, create a black window filling my screen (which normally contains the loading screen graphic) but it remains black and nothing happens even after several minutes.

I also can't even run the installer on a fresh wine prefix. The installer starts to run then hangs forever after the following messages:

The 'Broken NVIDIA RandR' messages are new. I don't understand whether these signify a real problem. Obviously the suggested solution of using Nouveau is impractical.

incredible slow loading

Since the last patch the game takes incredible long to load.
From starting the game until the menu appears it takes at least 10 minutes.

System: Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit
wine: 1.5.26
cpu: phenom II 905e
ram: 16 GB
gfx: nvidia 650gtx 2GB

The game is installed on a SSD.

Any ideas? I tried to install to a new wineprefix: Same result.
Setting winecfg to win7 or winXP makes no difference.

FPS is too LOW

My computer set up isnt great but in windows I run high without a struggle. In wine I run low at 20fps tops. Quad core , 2.4gthz , 4g ram , ati 6870. I want to post some of my findings for anyone who cares to look into them.

1) My first install I got 20 fps(low settings). After I quit the program and ran again i was getting 10-12. At that time i was running 2xati5750 crossed over so i thought maybe linux , or wine wasnt using them both. So i put in my 6870 and still 10 fps.

2) I tried running in windowed mode to see if that would help with fps and to monitor task manager resources and priorities. It did help with my fps. Back up to 20. My windowed mode was about 1/3 of my full screen.

3) I noticed in my resources that my 4 cores never went above 60% , and my ram never hit 70%.

4) I also noted that in the priority tab , sc.exe was using more than 100% cpu. Strange i thought , since how can you use more then 100% of your cpu. So im thinking , maybe theres an error in programming there where the program thinks its using all the cpu but its not?

5) Another curious thing is that pulse audio priority was set to very high yet everything else was set to normal. Maybe we would get more performance out of tweaking sc.exe to very high? If only i knew how...Im sure one of you will figure it out.

6) Doing some searching on optimizing all of this , I found a comment in this thread about tweaking the registry. I dont remember it all but i typed it all out and tried it. Didnt make a whack of difference in my test environment.

I will reply more to this comment if I make any head way.

Very low FPS

Wine version 1.5.19 through 1.5.25 (tested)

I have not been able to get my in-game FPS above 30. Menus seem to be capped at 60 FPS, but when a single player campaign level is running it hovers around 15-20 FPS and never goes above 30. I have tried the various combinations of patches and environment settings as well as the old registry settings listed on this AppDB page. One or two actually decreased performance but none were able to improve it.

Given that my system isn't exactly outdated (yet) I should be able to crank it up well past 60 FPS, no? I'd really love to smooth it out before the expansion drops. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Using gentoo AMD64 with wine version 1.5.24, Nvidia 313.18 and the following USE flags

sc2 insists on being fullscreen

After the last patch, sc2 seems to resize the desktop upon starting in fullscreen mode, even if I fiddle with the values in Variables.txt. Previously, it would run "fullscreen" inside the virtual desktop, and stay there, making it quite convenient to manage in a tiling window manager.

Running it in windowed mode draws some windows-y window decorations around the window inside the virtual desktop, which is annoying. Fullscreen (windowed) fails to correctly detect the virtual desktop size, and I end up with empty space on both sides of the game.

Any ideas how to force it to stay at the size I want it to stay?

My laptop use optimus card ( i7 3612 + GT650m ).
When I run "wine Starcraft\ II.exe", it works, although it can only run s in the low qulity mode. However, when I use "optirun wine Starcraft\ II.exe", problem occurs.
When I press the "start" bottom on the welcome dialog, the program show me a dialog writes "An error occurs when starting Starcraft II, please try again" (actually, it's written in Chinese, I don't the exact words) instead of start the game and closed. Any one can help me?

So finally I could run the game. I use wine 1.5.23, and nothing else. No libraries.

If I dont use this command in terminal:
"echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope"
There is no chance to start the game. After I click on the play button on blizzard updater window, the game exits with this error message:

"Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\Star Craft II\Versions\Base23260\SC2.exe


If I use that command, the game maybe starts, and I could use everything in SC2, but sometimes crashes with the same error. Randomly.
Sometimes I can play for hours, sometimes the game crashes while loading the first ladder game. (But never crashes in the menu).

A way to greatly improve performance for Nvidia GPU Users

right now there is a way to greatly improve performance in SC2 if you own an recent Nvidia Card.

If your card is capable of using the threading optimizations in the newer Nvidia drivers and your are willing to recompile wine for yourself, try the following:

Read the bug: beginning comment 260. It gets very interesting there.

Apply the patch :
And compile wine afterwards.

Then start Starcraft the following way:


LD_PRELOAD="" __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 WINEDEBUG=-all wine "Your Starcraft 2 Binary"

Its very important to use WINEDEBUG=-all, otherwise the game will perform worse with the patch.

Please give it a try and report back your results.

Overnight SC II stopped working

On the SC2 launcher, when I click the play button, the little sound plays, and thats it. launcher doesnt close. game doesnt open. nothing happens other then that little sound.
if it's any help my WoW launcher works 100% just fine.

wine 1.5.19 with KUSER_SHARED_DATA8 patch required for SWTOR.

Hello again. I have no more crashes, I managed to get the game work smoothly. Anyhow, I have no sound ingame (sound in game enabled ofc). However, there is sound in the game launcher it self, juts not in game when I launch it.

I'm getting the Miscrosoft Visual Basic error (R6034).
Althou, I am able to get into the in-game menus. The graphic is buggy in there already and when I try entering a game, the game crashes with the given above error.

Goofy graphics on Intel video

I'm using Wine 1.5.18 and I have Intel Graphics on my laptop. I'm running Kubuntu 12.04. I've included a link to a screenshot of the problems I'm having.

I have put in the recommended registry edits with no improvement.

Is running Starcraft 2 on Wine with Intel graphics just a lost cause?

New Nvidia R310 drivers not working

I was originally using the latest proprietary Nvidia drivers from nvidia-current, after upgrading the new R310 drivers my system works fine, but Starcraft 2 won't run anymore. (I'm running it through play-on-linux)

I get that the application has attempted to load the C runtime library incorrectly and that DirectX failed to initialize.

Previously, executing echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope would fix the problem, but does no longer work. I'm on Ubuntu 12.10.

fact is , that is a fu***ing wrong return message , so it' useless install other stuff such as direcX and so on ....

99% of the time you get R6034 error in wine is about a miss-understood
path just can't find the right path to the dlls files needed

solution :

delete files named:
in yours ./wine/ directory

wine will generate 'em again once you run 'winecfg' command

Mouse cursor doesn't work when alt tabbed, after wine 1.5.14

When I alt tab, my mouse cursor stays as the sc2 one and clicking has no effect on the sidebar, other applications, etc.

Flickering, Glitches, Lightning bugs?

I'm using mesa 8.0.4 and Intel HD Graphics 3000, wine 32-bit and -opengl and force_s3tc_enable=true

It flickers on ground in lighter colors and over the screen in triangles, also sometimes green color is over the screen, it depends on the map and the colors of the map.

I will try to take a video.

I've never experienced this before, I am not sure if it's caused by an update by mesa or StarCraft 2.

Mesa/Intel HD 3000 however runs StarCraft 2 fine, but this problem really has ruined my game within a short period of time, I feel really epileptic !

Increased FPS from 30 to 80

If your game runs well in windows but crappy on Ubuntu:

I did all the registry edits and got ~10 fps up from 20, but I typed this in the terminal:

taskset -p 2 `pidof SC2.exe`

and found a remarkable increase in quality. (20-30 fps - 70-80fps)

It makes starcraft use 2 cores instead of 50% of 4. All I know is I can play now! YAY!

Crash on loading fix

I managed to install SC2 without using winetricks, but then at some point I started getting this error on launching:

downloader crash during slow download

My internet has been really bad the past week and I accidentilly wiped my StarCraft II directory during a wine prefix import. Re-installed without much hassles but then the downloader started crashing while sc2.x.x.x.x-to-sc2.1.5 (or something like that) for whatever reason (probably the downloader is timing out). In any case. waiting for it to crash every couple of minutes for a couple of days is out of the question so I did this to let it continue while I go off to work.

Starter/Tuning/Benchmark Script

hi guys,

i once posted here my script but sadly got a disappointing response in terms of inspiration for further work or corrections - as if i am the only one, concerned about SC2 performance.
since than, i added quite some features notably a benchmark mode, because the last response before the post died asked me if i have any numbers about the tuning-settings.

the answer to this is still no, because i have not investigated the differences of the variety of settings yet.
first, i want to ask here again if there is anything to improve or alter.

sure, there are some things that must be changed but therefore, i need your advise.

one big disadvantage of this script is, it only starts SC2. but in order to get viable benchmark information, you need a reproducible workload, so:
- do you know how i can start replays out of the commandline? and
- how one might send commands form a bash shell to a x-window, like key-press "this" to switch to a player-camera or set the replay speed

- is "perf sched record" a good choice to collect performance data or do you know better ones?
e.g. i tried to collect directly from /proc/'pid'/[stats-sched-map] but i dont know about all that stuff. "perf" seems to me to be a better choice.

before you take a look at my pride, you should know that i am a scripting amateur.
i am happy about every suggestion.

NVIDIA GTS 450 FPS problem

emulate virtual desktop being ignored

I use winecfg>graphics> emulate virtual desktop when I play sc2. Used to work fine, but all of a sudden when I launch:

wine "$WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Program Files/StarCraft II/StarCraft II.exe"

the 'blizzard launcher' is launched in a virtual desktop window, but when i click the yellow 'play' button to launch versions//SC2.exe it ALWAYS goes fullscreen.

Any idea how to solve this? I only have 1 listing (Default Settings) under the "Applications" tab in winecfg. I've tried "add application..." for SC2.exe and the Starcraft II.exe blizzard launcher and specifying emulate virtual desktop for each, but the same problem occurs.

I've also tried the non 'winecfg' way of 'wine explorer /desktop=TEST,800x600 game.exe' but that does not help. Essentially the same problem reported here:

I'm using wine 1.5.10 and just got Visual C++ Runtime Error R6034.
Also, that one time, yesterday, Starcraft complained that my graphics card was out of memory. I'm using nvidia driver 304.22. So maybe, it's an issue with wine's D3D implementation? Maybe Starcraft is using some fancy API since patch 1.5

Since the update to Starcraft 1.5 I am receiving the runtime error message "R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the c runtime library incorrectly". vcrun2005 and 2008 are installed. I am running on winxp. The same issue appears in a new wineprefix. Did anybody experience similar issues?

- on August 1 evening I upgraded Starcraft to 1.5 version (Arcade) and played it for a few hours. Everything worked perfectly. Sound was through Alsa.

- on August 2 morning there was no sound. As far as I know nothing changed (I don't have automatic upgrades)

- afterwards I upgraded wine to 1.5.10. That didn't help.

Situation is:
- no sound with Alsa
- with Pulseaudio the sound is garbled (slowed down) (this is the same as before)

Ubuntu 12.04 (up-to-date), 64bit, Nvidia sound chip, Wine 1.5.10

Any ideas to fix it?

Hi there,

When i run the installer WoL under linux, i installated the game and after im trying to launch it game is trying to download and install updates. And then game is crahed with error:

"Failed To Run Required Program Agent error. Error Code: BLZPTS00007"


Any suggestions would be appreciated.

OS: linux Ubuntu 12.04 x32
Kernel: 3.2.x

1.5.0 patch causes agent to fail

I have sc2 installed on 11.10 ubuntu, amd64. Been working fine til the 1.5 SC2 patch came out. The updater starts, gets to 100% then starts the blizzard "StarCraft II Setup". After the agent starts, it sits there for a while (Title: StarCraft II Setup. Dialog text: Checking for updates), then it gives error: "Failed to run a required program (Agent). Wait one minute and try again.

It gives the link for help:

Deleting the folder does not help.

I can't figure out how to disable offline mode in IE from wine. I'm using play on linux 4.1.3

To run the StarCraft 2012 Arcade Mode Beta, you cannot start the game from the downloader. Instead go to your StarCraft installation folder and launch the application "Support/SCSwitcher.exe"

If your aspect ratio has been detected wrongly, go to the options page and choose "Windowed (Full Screen)" as your display option, then restart the game.

Starcraft 2 on NVIDIA - very low FPS

Hi all,
on my ArchLinux(x64), wine 1.5.5, GeForce GTS 450, I have very low FPS against in Windows.
I have last nvidia drivers: 295.53-2
For LOW setup of game in windows on 301.42 it take e.g.130FPS but on my Arch it's only about 30FPS :(
For ULTRA its about 40FPS in WIN and "only" 13FPS in Arch!!
I thing that for my last nvidia drivers it was playable for ULTRA without problems (on Arch of course).
Does anybody same issue as me?

Intermittent lag

Everything runs smoothly except for this: every 3-4 minutes, I get lag for 30 or so seconds, during which it's almost impossible to do anything (and that's usually the moment the enemy chooses to attack...).
I don't think it's a connection issue because I play WC3 on too and I have no lag problems there.
Also happens when not in a game, ie on the Menu page.
Sound is usually fucked up afterwards, so that might be the culprit.
Running on Ubuntu 12.04 with Wine 1.5.3

SCII crash at startup

hey there!
i have some issues with this game... or better, now i have only this problem :D
i have a notebook dell with geforce 435m (2gb ddr).
installed 4-5 month ago ubuntu 11.10 and SCII. it worked without problems. one month ago i updated at 12.04 and SCII doesn't work... i tried to change card driver, remove and reinstall both (driver and game), but the problem is always the crash at startup with this window...
any ideas?
any holy soul who can help me?

Can't Scroll To Bottom-Right Corner

fglrx driver (Catalyst Version 12.4)

StarCraft II appears to play normally with mid-high settings, at 30-40 constant fps, however when I scroll to the bottom right corner of the screen my fps drops to 1. Scrolling any other screen corner works at normal fps.

Please help, this is about the only thing tying me to Windows.

Game is all black on Ohana EC

I experience a new problem with SC2. The new map "Ohana EC" (season 7) appears all black in the game, and also in the map editor, which sounds weird...

Do you experience the same problem as me ? It it a wine bug (which would then have to be reported if it is confirmed) ?

Starcraft 2 crashes before I can log in

So first I couldn't update Starcraft, and I couldn't install IE6(because my system is 64-bit). Eventually I just decided to boot into Windows 7, update starcraft, and copy over the Starcraft 2 folder. So far so good, but after the cutscene it crashes. If I start the game it always crashes before I'm able to log in. I'm running it through PlayOnLinux with Wine 1.5.1, but the wine version it suggests, which is 1.3.27, doesn't work either.

I have an AMD 8150fx Eight-core processor and two Geforce gtx 570 graphics cards (I only use one of them under Linux). My OS is Ubuntu 12.04 (updated daily).

Starcraft 2 gives this crash report:

If I run wine from a terminal I get this:

Does this happen because I copied over the program from Windows, Ubuntu 12.04 or because of Wine?

Any help is appreciated :)

Starcraft II data in ~/

Not sure if this is a wine feature or a distribution thing, but in Ubuntu and Gentoo at least I've found a Starcraft II folder in my Linux home folder. After some investigation I've found the game writes to "c:\users\username\My Documents", which on the above two distributions at least seems to be symlinked to "~/".

There may be a SC2 setting to change the save folder, but I simply deleted the "My Documents" symlink, created a normal folder and copied "~/Starcraft II" into it.

Random crashes, BadDrawable & mirror/flipped screen

I have a problem where after a random amount of time, could be 10 minutes of game play or 10 hours (never in menu though), and the game crashes.

The crash is quite specific:
* Game freezes (like lag)
* Game unfreeze (for few seconds, sometimes enough to kill the game)
* Image is mirrored and flipped upside down (only some times)
* Computer freezes (everything dies, cannot debug via ssh)

This crash happens in 1.3.33 - 1.5.1 (all in between), the most stable ones are: 1.3.33 and .37. These seem to have a longer time-before-fail than all other versions.

If winecfg is set to Windows Vista, only 1.3.33 and .37 works. If set to Windows 7, all 1.3.33 - 1.5.1 works (with the caveat that 1.3.33 and .37 are the only ones that I can restart without restarting X).

All versions but 1.3.33 and .37 give me a X error when started (when set to anything else than Windows 7):
(the error also appears if Starcraft is restarted).

This (or these) problem(s) might be related to:
(although I do not have multiple monitors)

Since this is quite dependent on wine version (or it acts differently) I was hoping that someone here might have a clue on how to debug this.

This problem renders multiplayer games unplayable.

Gentoo amd64 (3.2.12 and earlier stable)
core i7
nvidia 540M (bumblebee + 295.20 and earlier stable)

"Quick Match" Error

Just an update. I am able to install, patch, and log in to Starcraft 2 with sound and video and network working properly.

My problem is that at the "Multi-Player", "Quick Match" screen, the circle just sits there spinning endlessly. I thought that something might be loading or cacheing, so I let it sit there. But even 1/2 hour later it is still spinning.

The 1v1 2v2 3v3 prompts never appear.

I have tried both 1.3.28 and 1.4-rc6. And I am using an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTX with Ubuntu 11.10.

I am using ubuntu 11.10, a Winfast Geforce 8800 GTX, and PlayOnLinux with wine 1.4-rc4.

I have fixed sound issues and the game installs and patches fine, and I am able to login to and my achievements load.

But when I go to multiplayer it just sits there as if its loading and nothing happens. Eventually if I sit there long enough my whole system will crash and I will have to hard reboot.

I can play solo campaign for short periods, but eventually this will also crash too and again I will have to hard reboot.

Also, if I try to exit normally by clicking menu and exit the screen will freeze and eventually will cause another crash, and again I have to hard reboot.

On my Core i3 computer with GT330M video card I can play without lags only on minimal graphic preferences. I've noticed that wine uses only 1 of four my CPUs.

- Sometimes, some units go underground (especially near chokes)
- Also, it misses some letters & numbers in some texts.

Performance Tweaks

hello guys,

im experimenting with the setting and performance of sc2 quite a while now and i wanted to share my experiences with you, hopefully someone can add or change some thing.

the first and most important performance tweak consists the Variables.txt. there are some commands that increase performance like nothing else.

these two options make the shadows completely disappear


the sound seems to me to be an important bottleneck of wine, heres my sound block of the varaibles
notice, the 6 soundchannels ive set, mute the individual sounds alot, especially in big fights, you only hear some, which is ok to me.


the graphic tweaks look like this
im not sure what eg. texSpace[2] does but i think its a gain to reduce it (512mb is my video memory).


this shall only be a little cleavage of my varaibles, there are some more possibilities in this but the information about it are very rare.
i dont have to mention that ive disabled/lowered every other option thats there and that you have to write-protect the Variables.txt in order to keep some of the settings. if you want to see my full variables, see:

the second thing you can enhance is wine.

this is how i compile my wine. right now im still experimenting with it because i cant get the -march=native flag to work (which is really sad), maybe you guys can help me with it.
it would be amazing if i get some pro-tips about compiler optimization, because this is an area i dont know very good.

I am quite lost: I have the "sound stops working after some minutes"-problem and I try to work through the settings.

But I wonder: Is the information here still up to date?
- "sound problems" above: the alsa-plugins GIT doesn't exist anymore
- "I accidently changed some graphics options - they seem to have no effect at all ...
- Isn't OpenAl support built in by default nowadays? I am not sure how to find out whether this is the case but that's what I read somewhere ...

I have wine 1.2.3 installed. Sound and everything is working great, the game for an unknown reason crashes unexpectedly during game-play. I tried upgrading to wine 1.3.24 (last known sound-sane version of wine), same problem.

gnome-shell 3.2 system tray interferes with starcraft

Somehow it seems that the mouse capture isn't working as intended with gnome-shell 3.2
When loading up a game I can't scroll the mouse to the corner right below because of the system tray which keeps popping up all the time.
Is it only me? Or does anyone else with gnome-shell 3.2 has the issue?

StarCraft 2 Crash after update

I just updated my system and I can no longer start the game.
It worked perfectly before that update.

Here are my system specs:
> Graphic card: Nvidia 8500GT 512MB

> StarCraft 2 version: 1.4.1
> Wine version: 1.3.31
> Kernel version: 3.0.7-1
> Nvidia driver version: 285.05.09-1
> Distribution: ArchLinux

When I start the game, one of this three things happens:
> The computer reboots
> The computer enters a kernel panic with a black screen (the lights of the keyboard are blinking, that's why I think it is a kernel panic)
> The screen turns black and the computer doesn't respond.

My guess is that something provokes a kernel panic. Can't know why because I updated wine, kernel and nvidia at the same time (it's been a long time since I updated).

I'm also lost because redirecting the output of the command run in a terminal with:
# wine /path/to/game/StarCraft2.exe > output.txt
leaves the file empty.

Any ideas about how to find the error that make the game crash?
Also, any other person has the same problem?

Sound not working...

I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 amd64. I have wine installed via the wine beta packages (1.3.31). I did the following to install Starcraft 2:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
$ sudo apt-get install wine1.3
$ sudo mount -o ro,unhide,uid=1000,loop Starcraft_2.iso /mnt
$ export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine.sc2
$ wine /mnt/Installer.exe

At this point Starcraft 2 installed normally without issue and patched without issue. The sound was a little flaky during installation but otherwise okay. When I pressed the "Play" button in the Installer, the game popped up in another workspace and clicking any button would not do anything. So I followed the advice on this page and did the Direct3D registry tweaks. This appeared to solve the problem. I don't know why.

Now, while the game starts normally and everything appears to be working fine, I can't get any sound output except in rare circumstances. For example, if I modify sound settings, such as number of channels, after hitting the "Accept" button I hear an extremely brief sound from hitting the button. Then sound it is again silent.

I have tried disabling "mmdevapi" library as suggested which doesn't help.

i have some problem for running Starcraft on Ubuntu 11.10 x64 System Version.

I have install wine-1.3.31 and Starcraft.
Install and update work fine but, when i start Starcraft from command line i have this error:

No - just recompile OpenAL manually. Download, make "cd build && cmake ..", copy libraries to /usr/lib. If you have 32-bit system, open CMakeFiles/CMakeCCompiler.cmake, change SET(CMAKE_C_COMPILER_ARG1 "") to SET(CMAKE_C_COMPILER_ARG1 "-m32"), compile. If you have pulseaudio, rename /usr/include/pulse to /usr/include/pulse2 before compiling.

For those of you trying to play on FreeBSD :

On FreeBSD 8.1-p4, Nvidia 256.53 I wasn't able to get past the login screen (ACCESS VIOLATION, memory could not be read...)

Problem solved after upgrading the kernel to 8.2-p2 & Nvidia driver to 270.19. The game works great :D

As specified above, to get the sound working :

1. wine regedit
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D
3. Create the string keys
- DirectDrawRenderer opengl
- VertexShaderMode hardware
- VideoMemorySize (the amount of ram of your graphic card)
- Multisampling disabled

Textures missing (black patches)

Hi all,

I'm experiencing this strange issue since last patch.
I'm using latest wine (wine-1.3.26) with Ubuntu 11.04 x86-64 and nVidia 270.41.06 (470 GTX).
Basically in some maps I see texture missing and instead of the colours/drawing a black patch.

Has anyone else experienced this?


Ps. Some of my friends playing with Windows seem to have experienced a similar issue.

No sound after v1.3.25

After updating Wine to v1.3.25 StarCraft II sound stopped working. I disabled the mmdevapi library but nothing, I removed it entirely and again nothing, I set it to builtin,native and native,builtin again nothing happened. Does anyone know how to fix this or how to downgrade Wine to v1.3.24 which was working fine?

I've read most of the comments and apply a few of the optiosn but still nothing.

* I've applied the changes in the registry.
* Remove pulseaudio because problems with sound (now fixed).

My system:

Wine 1.3.24
Catalyst 11.6
Radeon 5850 1GB Ram
Ubuntu 11.04
Kernerl 2.6.38-10

and still the performance is bad, around 16 all in lower resolution.

Drag Selection

I've been having a problem with drag selection for some time now in SC2 and WC3. It seems to have coincided with the mouse grabbing feature (around 1.3.19 or something?). I figured since nobody else has posted a bug report or even mentioned it, I may have some weird configuration or something that's causing it. Anybody else know why this is happening, or what I may be able to do to fix it?

Crash when displaying water

The game crashes whenever is has to display water.

For instance, in the 4th mission of the campaign (vs Zergs), I have to lead settlers to an evacuation point. When I click on the minimap on this point, surrounded by water, the game crashes.

The water is neither wierd nor black but the screen freezes and crashes (back to the desktop with a report to be sent to Blizzard).

I have tried several Wine's versions but with the same result. Do you think I should try older versions?

Wine 1.3.20 then 1.3.15 then 1.2.20
Ubuntu 11.04
Radeon hd 5830
Catalyst drivers

AMD 6650 Cannot regain window focus

I have and AMD6650 using catalyst 11.5, Starcraft 2 plays well and operates without any graphical problems for the most part. However, if I leave the game alone for too long, and my screen blanks out(which it doesn't actually because the game window is always on top) I cannot figure out a way to minimize the game or regain window focus, I've tried switching workspaces and tried alt-tabbing....nothing will take the game screen off. You can tell it is on the desktop, because the cursor isn't the starcraft2 cursor, it is the OS cursor. This problem happens to OpenGL applications that refresh their contents, the contents are refreshed onto the screen even if another window is in front of them(things such as any game through wine, cheese webcam, glxgears, anything I've written in OpenGL/GLUT). It doesn't happen if the window doesn't refresh though, if it doesn't refresh sometimes it will grab the desktop image that if behind the window though when it stops moving. So I realize this is a driver problem, however I was wondering if anyone knew a functioning version of Catalyst with my card(Gallium drivers don't run sc2) or if someone could give me some pointers as for hotkeys to minimize certain windows or other such.

Nvidia or ATI?

since my nvidia card crashed today I need to get a new graphics card. I also wanted to maybe try an ATI card but first I wanted to ask if anyone of you has some experience with an ATI card and starcraft 2. If so, does the game run smooth on medium to high settings? are there a lot of graphical glitches? do you epxerience crashes or anything?

Well... I have updated my registry with the suggested tweaks, still doens't work. I have tried launching the game from the terminal with the -opengl tag and that crashes still. I downloaded and manually patched the game and it still doesn't run. The game crashes immediately at launch, no load screen, no anything, just fails. Anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong?

Can't get it off the ground

I downloaded the internet installer for kubuntu x64 11.04. I seemed to download and install just fine. When I try and run it though it doesn't even start to launch. About half the time it will give me an error message, and the other half the time it will just hang at the task bar for a bit an disappear. Using the standard wine rep of the software manager with wine tricks installed. Default wine configuration. Kind of stumped here.

If I can get starcraft II working stable on linux I can comfortably let go of my windows install, help would be great here.

Updater issues

The updater stopped working for me around the time 1.3.19 came out. I don't believe this is regression, though, since downgrading hasn't helped. Nor has reinstalling Starcraft (in 1.3.18 or 1.3.20)

I'm using manually compiled 1.3.21 on Debian sid.

So this is actually an alsa bug. In order to resolve this issue you need to compile the current alsa-plugins.
A small how-to on how to do this:

cd ~
git clone alsa-plugins
cd alsa-plugins

sudo make install
OR if you are on a debian/ubuntu system use "sudo checkinstall" instead. If you do so choose the right version number and package name so it won't conflict with aptitude

sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload

It worked for me :)

Solving the sound issue with wine 1.3.20

Since wine 1.3.18 (i think) there are many people with a broken sound. I tried a lot of stuff and I think I finally got it working:

- eSound didn't work for me, it had a latency which was like 0.6secs - unplayable!
- Setting hardware support to emulation or changing any of the frequency parameters didn't help either

Here is what I did:
I have 2 sound cards, first I disabled (via blacklisting the module) my on-board sound card since I don't use this one any more, second I removed the mmdevapi exception and set the sound back to alsa. I am not sure if this fixes the sound-crashes since I was not able to test it in the long-run but the sound is not garbled any more.
I will report if this finally fixed the soundissues in a few days after some testing.

New sound issues with Ubuntu 11.04 Nvidia and Wine 1.3.20

Ever since updating to 11.04 I have been experiencing all of the old sound issues. Running with win7 or winXP, Alsa, emulation or full, 48k, 16 creates hissing and popping in game with occasional crashes that require you to access the F10 menu to get back. Running with eSound in either config introduces about a 5 second lag between when you would expect to get the sounds and when you actually hear them.
Jack and NAS of course do not work at all, and I don't have the option for OSS even though the packages are installed.

If I drop back to Wine1.2 then I get choppy sound with alsa full and static with alsa emulation. The last time everything was working was with wine1.2 Ubuntu 10.04 and the old nvidia 260 drivers.

I've thrown just about everything I can think of at this to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas?

Corrupted install

I when starting SCII with wine-1.3.20 and some previous versions, I was getting a message saying my install was corrupted. I ran the repair utility and it did not find anything wrong. Running from the command line showed this at the end of the log:

err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"WLDAP32.dll": cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
err:module:import_dll Loading library WLDAP32.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\StarCraft II\\Support\\") failed (error c000007a).

I had the 64 bit version of libldap, but not the 32 bit version. I'm on Arch, so I installed lib32-libldap and the corruption error went away.

Regarding the broken sound in SC2, using wine 1.3.20

My sound broke when I updated my wine. I have been compiling wine with openAL, so I did not need the overwrite of mmdevapi (disabled). With these settings all intact, the sound was broken in SC2 using wine 1.3.20.

I fixed it by the following steps (rendering the sound in the game completely stable):

- Compiled wine without openAL
- Added the overwrite of mmdevapi (disabled)
- Set sound to emulation.

I am using FreeBSD 8.2 on the following specs:

P4 3.2GHz
Nvidia 9800GT
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum.

NB: FreeBSD uses the OSS sound structure, so perhaps this fix won't help linux users who use any other kind of sound structure. Please post comments either way if you tried this "fix"

Broken Shaders & Broken Sound

since wine 1.3.19 the sound often just crashes while playing. To re-enable it I need to change the audio device (there is one called "default" and one "(default(null))") and it works again for like 2-5 minutes.

Also when playing with shaders above "low" some backgrounds are black

SCV Modell incorrect Ubuntu 11.04

Recently I've been getting frequent Starcraft II crashes. They started out very rare (every other day or so), then recently have been happening every few minutes.
Here's the terminal output I get when I run Starcraft II and it crashes.

I'm pretty sure the last two lines are the root of my problem, but googling the error didn't help me at all.

Wine version is 1.3.17. Linux version is Sabayon 5.5. Kernel is 2.6.38.
Graphics card is an 8800GTS 512MB, CPU is a Q6600.

Patcher fails to update to 1.3.2

So, I don't know how recent this issue is in terms of wine versions, but even rolling back to my older versions, I encounter the following problems when trying to update SC2 to 1.3.2:

With my current version of wine (1.3.17), none of the usual "patch notes" content shows up. It's just the background with no text.

This problem is not present in wine 1.2, at least, I know. It is present in 1.3.16. I don't yet know exactly how far back I need to go before the problem is gone. It might have something to do with my specific wine, maybe something wrong with my gecko? But I've tried reinstalling it to no change, so... dunno.

The second problem is that when the patcher hits 70%, this blank, StarCraft-themed window pops up, and no more progress is made. There is no content in the window, but it kind of looks like a notification window of some sort. Maybe an update to terms of use or something? I am just making wild guesses here but I get the impression it's either supposed to be an error message or some kind of prompt for me to agree to something. Unfortunately, it's blank, so the only thing I can do is close the window, which closes the patcher and gets me nowhere. Starting the patcher again after this yields the exact same result. So, I'm stuck.

Tested someone new AMD drivers? For me, after upgrade drivers (and PC), most of graphics problems disappeared.
I tested elder wine via PlayOnLinux and everything works on it. So it is probably new AMD driver, my new hardware, or new SC patch.

(from AMD HD 4350 and 480x chipset to HD 5750 and P67 rev. 3)

Now with GDI render, fbo and GLSL can see blur on place of invisible units, and can use better shaders.

hey .. can any1 help me with starcraft 2 ... i have teamviewer so some1 can connect and see the problem and help me .. i got the game running , full screen only, sound works i can log in but cant play multiplayer or siungleplayer

i installed the the game on windows fully updated and such
copied teh starcraft to folder to my linux desktop

wine starcraft \II.exe -opengl is what i ran to launch game
it launches full screen, i log in , click on multiplayer, it it loads endlessly,, never end up seeing my buttons to choose race or search for a game and such

i have ati 5850 with the ati's driver 11.2
anti tear enabled ( didnt seem to matter)

please let me know

ATI, fglrx, crash when trying to access the Zeratul missions

When trying to access the Zeratul-Missions via the memory-crystal in the lab I get a crash (log: )

occurred at 0023:00D7524B. The memory at '0x00000000' could not be read.

My setup: ATI Radeon HD 4350, FGLRX, Gentoo GNU Linux (via wine 1.3.15, kernel 2.6.36-gentoo-r5)

The free driver sadly had severe graphics issues, but aside from this crash in the Zeratul mission and occassional minor glitches, Starcraft 2 runs nicely with fglrx.

Any Idea how to get the Zeratul mission working?

I just got Starcraft II but I've a problem, please look @ my screenshot (link is way down there ↓) to the left you can see a black bar which is really annoying. It's always there.

And if you look down to the left you can see my cursor, the thing is that if I want to click a button, unit or whatever I have to put it a bit left from the button, otherwise the cursor isn't really above the button.. How do I fix this? I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, Wine 1.3.15 and Nvidia 8800GTS.. Notice I'm running it windowed, and that's how I want it.

Not working at all with ATI

Hi everyone.

I am trying to run the game with the latest r300g driver from Git and it completely fails, menus and in-game textures don't appear correctly.
I have set all settings according to recommendations from this page. Wine is 1.3.11.

I have uploaded screenshots, glxinfo and Xorg.0.log here:

I have already contacted the driver developers, they say it is a wine-issue, not a driver issue. There are other reports, that say the game displaying correctly with these drivers:

Could someone please have a look at this?

I managed to run the game on Ubuntu 10.10 with wine 1.3.12 on my intel i3 cpu and intel hd graphics gpu (arrandale)

the game runs with these tweaks

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D If this key does not exist, create it. Right click on Direct3D and select "New" then select "String" for each of the keys bellow and set the string to the corresponding value:

DirectDrawRenderer opengl
Multisampling disabled
OffScreenRenderingMode backbuffer
UseGLSL enabled
VertexShaderMode hardware
VideoMemorySize (Set this value to the RAM on your video card)

Enable limited ARB_fragment_shader support on 915/945: yes (this is what makes UseGLSL work)

S3TC compression: yes

In game i've set all to the lowest and run the game with -opengl option

It is playable and there are no show crashes. but could I get a little bit more performance ?

ATI 'bad glass' workaround for pbuffer rendering

Hey ATI users! I came across another workaround for the "bad glass" bug that happens when using the orm=pbuffer key. Instead of using orm=backbuffer, which I found didn't work very well on my graphics card (leaves out parts of the map &c.), I found that if you are in an XMonad session, you can get the bad glass to go away. Here is what to do:

(0. Use wine regedit to set My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\OffScreenRenderingMode to pbuffer. Winetricks can to this too: winetricks pbuffer.)
1. Download and install the XMonad window manager. You should be able to start an XMonad session from your display manager.
2. Press Alt+Shift+Enter to bring up a console. Start SC2 from this console (e.g. wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/StarCraft\ II/StarCraft\ II.exe, or linux32 wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/StarCraft\ II/StarCraft\ II.exe for 64-bit users) and immediately press Alt+2 to switch to the second workspace so that SC2 starts in it. (There are other ways to go about this, like pressing Alt+Shift+2 to move the console to the second workspace, or pressing Alt+Space twice to switch the tiling algorithm to full screens. I just prefer this one.)
3. Once SC2 has started, press Alt+Space twice to switch to the fullscreen tiling algorithm. This will allow you to scroll using the edges of the screen.
4. Play SC2. If you get a 'bad glass' effect, just press Alt+Space a number of times that is a multiple of three (usually three works, but sometimes six or nine times are necessary for mine to go away) and the 'bad glass' will go away, leaving you with a beautiful, uncorrupted screen.

Enjoy! And all of you who use other tiling window managers, let me know if this works for you.

Hotkeys problem

I am using Czech qwertz keyboard layout and game have switched hotkeys for Y and Z. Strange thing, problem is only in battle. in menus everything works OK.
Is there some chance, how to switch keyboard layouts?
setxkbmap probably didn't go deep enought to affect game.

My keyboard setting:
setxkbmap -layout "cz,us" \ -option "grp_led:scroll, grp:alt_shift_toggle, lv3:ralt_switch"

Wow thats a problem, have you tried starting starcraft from a terminal and checking if anything in the output jumps out at you -- just a shot in the dark.

Does windows make any difference?

An older version of wine? This maybe be a regression unless this has also happened to you with previous versions.

And lastly try a different graphics card driver if you have one available.

I'm not optimistic about any this but it doesn't hurt to try.

This game runs OK when installed using the tweaks at the top of the page. However, the performance isn't nearly as good as when running on Win7- I have a Core i7 CPU and nVidia GT330M GPU, and on Win7 I can play the game quite happily with high graphics settings. With Wine, Medium is max, and then it's a struggle at times.

I don't know if this is the problem, or something unrelated, but when I run the game from the terminal, I see a lot of these messages:

If the installer hangs while downloading patch 1.03, install ie6, and set the wine version to windows XP:

$ sh winetricks ie6
$ winecfg
Go to Applications, set Windows Version to "Windows XP"

Patch 1.1.1 working again with wine 1.3.4

First I had Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, kernel 2.6.32, wine 1.3.3 from PPA repo, nvidia drivers 195.36.15. This worked fine with all SC2 versions prior and after 1.1 patch.

Then I upgraded my entire system (fresh install) to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit beta, kernel 2.6.35, same wine 1.3.3 from PPA repo, nvidia drivers 256.53. This crashed as soon as I entered my email on the login screen with output that looks like LK4D4's and CSchmidt's prior comments.

Today there was a package upgrade available for wine to 1.3.4. SC2 now works without crashing again. The wine team are awesome. Hooray =)

I've now played over 80 league matches online with SC2 on Ubuntu!

Note in all cases I also installed dx9 with winetricks among some other packages but I don't think that has any effect. And followed similar process to Mattias's excellent post (minus ATI stuff)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.3
winetricks orm=backbuffer
set windows version to 'Windows 7'

i played SC2 since the retail came out, but after applying the latest 1.1.1 patch i get the following error.

I played multiple multiplayer games with mine until suddenly i crashed everytime and got the repair error.

The wine window wouldn't let me repair either

I'm on ubuntu so i didn't have the same packages, but started up synaptic package manager and searched lib32 - dl'ed almost everything associated.

Mouse map scrolling

I can't start SC2.exe because of such issue:

ATI problems

Just a small post, because, I've just post data saying that I could not run it anyway I could try. It appends that this was notlinked to wine and its configuration but to the default ATI driver in Ubuntu/Lucid Lynx.

I used the latest driver from this PPA ;
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

and everything is working know (except fonts which are missing letters, will look for that later).

CPU Frequency

Hi guys,

Just wanted to share with you that my CPU (AMD Phenom II X4 965) will usually throttle to 800 MHz (instead of 3.4GHz) during gameplay, lowering FPS by 30~40%, if set Ondemand mode.

I have to manually set it to 3.4GHz (or Performance) to get more FPS.
My videocard is a GTX 470 (drivers 260.19.06); I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 x86-64.

Does anyone else experience this?

My biggest fear is that for whatever reason the videocard isn't used to the max, hence the CPU times out and Linux decides to lower the frequency.
Using WoW I remember that this was not happening; if I use other native games, like HoN, the CPU stays fixed at 3.4GHz (as expected, to get max FPS).

To be able to install the patch (the downloader crashed), I had to add dll override mshtml to 'native' in winecfg (libraries tab).

Then update worked flawlessly, been playing fine .

The following are the tweaks that I made to get SC2 running/looking as good as possible under wine:

Execute: wine regedit

Create HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D (if it doesn't already exist).

Right click and select New -> String value. Name them as follows (as set the string value as follows)...

DirectDrawRenderer opengl
Multisampling disabled
OffScreenRenderingMode pbuffer
UseGLSL disabled
VertexShaderMode hardware
VideoMemorySize 1024 (set this to correspond to the amount of video memory on your graphics card).

UseGLSL disabled had the most dramatic effect on performance. If I enabled medium shaders in game without that option the performance was horrible. After I set that I could enable medium shaders no problem.

The in-game video settings that I am using are as follows:

Texture Quality: High
Graphics Quality: Custom
Shaders: Medium
Lighting: Low
Shadows: Medium
Terrain: Medium
Reflections: Off
Effects: Low
Post-Processing: Low
Physics: Low
Models: High
Units Portraits: 3D
Movies: High

These options work best for me. You'll probably have to tweak them depending on how powerful your PC and graphics card are.

Crash on Hyperion Bridge

Someone it happens to him that SC2 crashes when selecting a planet in the Hyperion Bridge? I'm not sure if this is a system bug, bad installation, wine bug, or blizzard bug (ok, it's impossible xD).

Rendering upside down

Well I fixed the prism effect artifacting, but now the game is upside down. The input works upside down as well. Really weird. I'm getting great framerate though....

I also can't read most of the menu entries under options, and the title of the map only displays every other letter.

No it actually crashes pretty hard. I posted the crash details above. I tried your suggestion but I'm not seeing that process in the task manager at all.

The crash pops up a window that says "The application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way." clicking ok terminates the downloader completely.

I'd like to share a bunch tricks which helped me in getting decent game performance:
1) set cpugovernor to performance, before loading the game (if on a laptop)
2) set wine so that it doesn't use GLSL:
run regedit
navigate to HYKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D (if this folder does not exist, then create it)
put a new pair key/value UseGLSL and set it to disabled
3) tell wine how much video memory do you have:
run regedit
navigate to HYKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D (if this folder does not exist, then create it)
put a new pair key/value VideoMemorySize and set it to your video memory size, i.e. 256, if you have 256 Mb on your video card
4) set wine so that it runs in windows7 mode (run winecfg, browse through the tabs, you'll find it)
5) increase your ram / swap size

Starcraft 2 has worked until today when 1.0.3 patch was released!

It tries to download the patch but at 70% it stopps, display a wine program has encountered a error and need to be shutdown, and nothing more happends.

I've tried to install several times using an image file with the contents copied. I've been playing in Windows but no luck so far in Linux.

I get through the install with no errors (I have to blindly click on the buttons due to missing labels), however the patch says 'The application couldn't be executed for some reason. Please close all other programs and try again.'

Anyone have luck with a similar system, or can you give some advice? I'm using a separate wineprefix and I've installed the following packages via winetricks:

droid fontfix fontsmooth-rgb gdiplus gecko vcrun2008 vcrun2005 allfonts d3dx9 win7

Starcraft 2 works almost perfectly on my Ubuntu 10.04 with wine 1.2. The only problems i have are with sound and voice. In audio settings in winecfg the Default Sample Rate is set to 48000 and the Default Bits Per Sample is set to 16. If i set Hardware Acceleration to full, the sound works in general but if I spend too much time in sound or voice options it fails and I have to restart my computer to get it back. Also, my mic doesn't work and I can't hear my friends voice chat.

If I set Hardware Acceleration to emulation, I can safely go into voice or sound options, but the sound seems to fail randomly and my mic does work but I haven't been able to test whether my friends can hear me or I can hear them because of the regular sound-failing.

As of yet I have been unable to find anyone else on the internet who has these problems, so any help would be much appreciated.

I have set mmdevapi to disable, just by the way.

Performance on Nvidia - stats

I just tried several of the proposed steps to boost the performance. The results are:

All is Medium settings, 1600x1200, Nvidia 9600 GT:
It's measured on the start of that tactical challenge (or how it's called):

wine 1.2, Ubuntu default Nvidia drivers (195): 27 FPS
wine 1.2, latest Nvidia drivers (256): 29 FPS
wine 1.3, latest Nvidia drivers (256): 31 FPS

so the performance gains are only small, but noticeable.

Connection Timeout During Install

Your graphics settings in SC2 and Wine (D3D)

Hi guys,

I have a 470 GTX but when I set all ultra I go around 15~20 FPS (drivers version 256.35 for x86-64, Ubuntu 10.04).
I've left the Wine D3D settings as default.

Do you have any suggestions on how to bump FPS (at least 30+) using a good quality graphics setting?
As now I play with Low settings around 40+ FPS, but I'd like to have a bit more given my specs.

Please post your settings (game and D3D for wine) and videocard (maybe drivers as well?).

I had no issues with sound or the game at all on my laptop. However, with a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04 and wine from git. I installed all updates along with the latest 256.44 driver for my nvidia GTX 260. The game was completely silent. Puzzled, as I used the same source code on my laptop, I began to attack the problem. A post by Ed Shinker prompted me to have a look at pulseaudio. Looking at the process list, I found that pulseaudio did not appear to be running at all. I was confused as I had sound otherwise. I decided I should install the pulseaudio manager or paman as its listed in the package manager. This appeared to install pulseaudio server as a dependency. From there I went into pulse audio volume control and made sure everything was unmuted and cranked up. I rebooted the machine and started SC2. Sound was working. I hope this helps someone.

SC2 FPS breakdown after a while

I installed sc2 with the latest git-build of wine, and everything works, but after a few minutes of playing I get a huge fps-breakdown which lasts for a few minutes and then the games goes on fluently (It's like I start playing with 50 fps, after 5 minutes its ~2 fps for a few minutes and then i jumps back to 50).
Has anybody seen that problem and knows a fix for it?

The installer ran as advertised it would, but I had a very hard time with the EULA and the entire login portion of the game. In order to get the game playable, I had to set a virtual desktop in wine to the resolution size of one of my screens, then the mouse pointer aligned with the buttons on the screen when it came to interactive actions like clicking. the mouse would technically hover properly when I moved it, but I would have to go pretty far over to the right of the button to highlight it so I could click on it. Depending on which part of the screen I was trying to interact with, this would disable me from being able to interact at all.

The only thing I'm really fighting right now is that the mouse cursor is not being locked within the confinements of the game window, no matter which setting or way I try. I've tried the cursor setting = 2 as mentioned above, I've also tried to tell wine to let DirectX to confine the window cursor to the application window but whenever I try to go to the right (when I play in the left screen) the mouse just goes over into the other ubuntu screen and I have not figured out how to fix this yet..

Overall, the game runs really well, sound is great, and all the functions are working for me so far.

Non-garbled text with ATi Cards?

Hello all,

Hello all, I don't seem to have the problem with garbled text on ATi cards. I did at first, but some setting of mine has appeared to make it work. As I'm not sure which setting it is, could someone investigate:

1) Setting OffScreenRenderingMode to pbuffer
2) Setting VideoMemory to your cards VRAM size
3) Enabling multisampling

I have played around with these settings and *really* don't want to mess it up. Also, I am running with Medium shaders and Medium effects enabled in SC2. The option menu doesn't appear to work except through the ingame menu.

I have a 4850 with 10.7, and am running Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with kernel 2.6.35 rc-6 and WINE 1.2.

Can't launch game from StarCraft II.exe

I've got the game installed fine with WINE 1.2 under Ubuntu 10.4, but when I try to launch the game from the StarCraft II.exe file, it will only launch if there is a patch to download. In that case, the launcher will start and grab the patch just fine. Otherwise, nothing will happen when I try to launch it.

I can launch the game if I use the SC2Switcher.exe file to launch the game. It's workable, but if anyone knows why I can't launch from the normal StarCraft II.exe all the time, I'd appreciate it.

Sorta Noob question

I'm getting that ACCESS_VIOLATION error, applied to an apparently random memory location.

I've noticed the patch, and I understand that the way IceDB handles that debug event is... well, too messy for it to work as Bliz demands.

What follows is some code that I visibly need to compile, but the directory structure is different on Ubuntu than on Arch and I don't know exactly what I'm doing anyway.

How do I patch that? Can someone either point me to a good source or just pass me a command or seven?

only tweak was disabling mmdevapi for sound to work. Other than that, no issues so far. I didn't expect this game to reach platinum status out of the box, nicely done Blizzard. Lets hope that more and more games with such behaviour over wine will come up in the future

Success with NVIDIA drivers

the lastest NVIDIA drivers seemed to be really geared for linux systems if you check out the patch notes,

i don't think the windows version of the driver is over 250, so good on nvidia for some pure linux love

I use 2 screens and they're not the same size, and I only want the game on one, this is normally a challenge, and it was here too. But reading deeper in those patch notes I noticed the mention of new VDPAU support, hmm, so from the info about that it references, they mention the environment variable VDPAU_NVIDIA_SYNC_DISPLAY_DEVICE which solves the problem beautifully

and use your Starcraft 2 options to use "windowed (fullscreen)" (use winecfg and set emulate desktop to get to the options window if your screen is already messed up, i had trouble getting into options when it used the combined resolution of my screens to display)

panning is a little iffy on the border to my other screen, but the other 3 edges work great which they didn't with emulate desktop on, and there was no other way to get coherent resolution without that for me

As the tutorial suggests, running with mmdevapi disabled fixed the 'no sound' issue. Game installs fine as well.

NVidia driver 195.36.31 on a Quadro NVS 160M. Yeah, not too great, but works fine (in lower graphic details). Wine 1.2.0 used, clean install.

I bet if i disable compiz and other eye candy, it will run even smoother :P

FIX? : Problem Installing from Disc

If you're not going to take the game back to the store, go ahead and register for and enter your license code there.

After I did that, I was prompted to download a client for the game. Bliz game me a 2 MB program that runs smoothly and is downloading a 7 GB install file now.

The 2 MB downloader is reminiscent of torrent programs. When you exit, what you have downloaded thus far is safe. You can disable peer-to-peer downloading, and see how long the direct http download takes.

One issue: when I have to exit the downloader, it freezes. However, in my task manager, I have found that it is simply called 'l'. Killing that task will take out the other 'C' tasks and the wineserver.

I hope this helps! Will update with more info on the client I'm downloading when I'm available next - that will be well after its done downloading.

Graphics settings

I found on 1.2 that if you set the configuration to run in Vista compatibility, that it is possible to pretty much max the game out. HOWEVER there's a glitch with the shaders if you put them on anything higher than medium which causes like three things to not display properly. During actual gameplay it for the most part still looks really nice, but you'll have to change it back to medium if you want to play the Lost Viking minigame since the projectiles won't draw over the black background (but they will over any scenary such as rocks), there's also render glitches on Raynor's hair, sometimes you won't see any background when your on the bridge, and Firebat flames won't draw. I think this bug may be related to the black background on the installation screen. I also find that using OpenGL and pbuffer in the registry gives better performance.

Sound works with OpenAL

Gentoo i686 kernel 2.6.31, wine 1.2 compiled from source.

1. Mounting needed unhide and uid options, after that DVD worked.
2. Install and update works.
3. Runs ok, windowed full screen in 1920x1080
4. No sound with ALSA or OSS without overrides.
5. mmdevapi disable causes lots of errors and hang on login.
6. Console message about missing OpenAL. Installed OpenAL and recompiled wine.
7. With OpenAL in wine, sound works ALSA and OSS. No overrides needed.
(though some weird chirp sounds when in the menu, but that might be an OpenAL issue).
8. So far tested the tutorial...

Retail DVD mounting needs unhide and uid options on mount and wine needed OpenAL support for sound to work.

Last Hurdle

Hey, I just got ubuntu 2 days ago for my desktop after familurising myself a bit with it on my desktop.

I tried installing the game from the retail cd and after some tweeking and installing the nessisary wine tricks this sequence of code worked for me
sudo umount /media/SC2-L100-D1
sudo mount -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/sr0 /mnt
cd /mnt
wine installer.exe

Now i got the sound to work from the tutorial but now i ran into another issue.

The game loads fine, i log in fine, i get to the next screen and click the campaign button and the game exits. It exits every time i try getting into a game.

Could this be due to my kernel? I am running a fairly default ubuntu 10.04

Or is this due to during the installation when it asked for the cd key the box to enter it disapeared? I entered the cd key in on but i never actually put it into the game. If so how do i enter it in.

Graphical Bug

I had no problem with installation of the game.
Then I started the game, it worked ok, but without the sound. I've added mmdevapi.dll in winecfg and put it on disable and the sound started working.
The interface looks fine, works fine too.
I've started Campaign and got the first video running. Sound works, but instead of seeing the video perfectly, the video seems scattered around the screen (f.e. There is no table, only a glass of wine floating in mid air ... or you can't see the face of the man speaking, only his beard, etc.).
So I've said that it might be just the first video that is like that, so I skipped the video and started the mission. Once I got inside the game, all I could see is the minimap and some weird platform in middle of the screen. I've tried to move with my mouse up and down through the minimap, but only that small little platform changed it's shape a little, still not showing the game.

Does anyone have the same problem as this, seeing some weird graphical changes in the environment?

When I play Starcraft 2 it works pretty well most of the time but quite often it experiences a critical error and crashes, as well as freezing my desktop and forcing me to restart. This only happens when I set the mmdevapi dll overide to disable. The game works fine when the sound doesn't. I am still using wine 1.1.42 because 1.2 isn't available from my synaptic package manager yet (Ubuntu 9.04) and I notice that this no-one else has posted about this problem, and everyone seems to have wine 1.2, so I am guessing that the problem only occurs with the older version of wine. Just posting this to inform anyone who has the same problem as me. When I upgrade to 1.2 I will post what I find.

This may be a silly question, but can I ask what version the driver utility says when you run the 10.7 utility? I run the 10.7 I obtained from ATI, but the version number in the file itself says 8.7something.

everybody with ati graphics and the included problems, like scrambled 2d images, crash after match ends and no custom games playable can fix this with the new 10.7 catalyst drivers from ati, which is not in the ubuntu-repository yet.

ok, its not perfect. one little issue is remaining, some of the texts are broken (you see only some letters, some are replaced by blank spaces (mostly) and some by As and Es) which was not in 10.6 before but this does not appear in every text (mostly in popups) and im optimistic to fix this some day.

To install the Catalyst 10.7 driver was a little tricky and gave me some hard hours. im not an expert so you might disagree with my description, but here is how i installed it:
You need the uninstall fglrx (or what else driver you may have) completely. the most tuts refer to and somewhere in /etc/ati or /usr/share/ati but it was missing in my case, i couldnt find it and so i think i was not able to install in a clean environment.
therefore i uninstalled it manually "sudo apt-get purge fglrx*", made a backup of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and than i launched the "" and rebooted.
my big problem was then, it was somehow broken, the desktop ran smoothly but there was no 3d acceleration and i was not able to figure out why BUT it installed a /usr/share/ati/ :)
so i uninstalled it again with the script, rebooted, installed it again and played my first singleplayer campaign :)

OK - wine 1.2

I confirm it works perfectly (played 5 hours in single player campaign so far):

- wine 1.2 final
- ubuntu 10.04 (fully updated)
- clean .wine directory before install
- for installation I need to use "unhide" parameter for mount, otherwise no patching or hacking was required (sound worked fine on default settings)

It's probably slower than native version, because of DirectX, but it's definitelly very playable (I'm using 1600x1200 on Medium settings).

Multiple monitor, window cursor, sound

- Anyone else having issues with multiple monitor support? Using my laptop, if I disable my external monitor (which makes me very, very sad...) it will run fine, but it crashes on attempting to load with both panels enabled.

- In attempting to address the above I tried setting it to windowed mode, only to find that the cursor was off by ~100px as compared to where the game thought it was.

- Sound doesn't work except for a few audio artifacts from time to time, which, in as story-heavy a game as this, is kind of a problem.

Weird Graphical Issue at Login

I'm running wine 1.2, Ubuntu x64 10.04 (Lucid), and have an ATI HD Radeon card, with properly-installed proprietary drivers. And Compiz (though I had the same problem with Metacity).

The game starts up fine, with the exception of a mass of wine errors mostly pertaining to mmdevapi being disabled. Sometimes the login screen will be in view briefly before the "Loading" screen pops up. At this point both are flawless.

But right as it finishes loading, 3/4ths of the screen get very blocky and garbled. The leftmost 1/4th of the screen is normal. Completely unplayable. Because of the delay in the error, I don't know if it's wine, my drivers, X, or whatever.

My own experiences:

1. Could not install from the disk. Attempting so gave a "No Installer" error. I think.
2. Remounted the drive with the unhide option.
3. STILL could not install from the disk. Didn't even bother with an error that time.
4. Copied the contents of the disk into a folder on my desktop.
5. Installed from the desktop smoothly.
6. Played the first mission, kinda low FPS. Playable, though. Fun. :)
7. Reduced video settings, FPS went up. More fun. :)

I haven't played online just yet. I thought I'd do that a bit later.

The editor freezes my computer after it appears to get loaded up. That's a separate program, though.

I'd give the main program a gold rating, and the editor garbage.

Still no sound

Still no sound despite disabling mmdevapi. I used the digital download installer and run Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. And have tried the following configurations:
ALSA Full hardware acceleration
ALSA emulation hardware acceleration
OSS full hardware acceleration
OSS emulation hardware acceleration

Leaving mmdevapi alone does not seem to help the problem. Playing around with in game settings does not seem to help the problem. I somehow got sound once, but have been unable to duplicate the success. Any ideas?

Am I the only one experiencing this?

half texture error

sometimes all quad textures show only the texture in the upper triangle.the lower triangle is black. the Game will still run.
The problem remains in main menu. Only restart can help.

This could be very annoying in a multiplayer game.
How can I fix it?

I use wine 1.2:
win7, nativ d3dx10, mmdevapi is disabled, alsa.
nvidia 256 driver + geforce 260

I'm absolutely against "Platinum" or "Gold" status.

It's not playable on non-nvidia cards at all. Platinum games may run with issues on non-nvidia, taking in account buggy or incomplete drivers, but they should be at least playable.

I have two hard drives in my box one running XP and the other running Ubuntu. Ubuntu runs at about 10-15 FPS while XP runs at 40-50 FPS. Does anybody else notice this lag on their setups?

What xorg version you are using? I'm trying to downgrade wine to see if this is regression, but most probably this is just same old ati-drivers-are-broken bug.

Do you have any issues with installer? I'm using digital copy and there is absolutely no text or GUI controls visible in installer and background, that is just black on nvidia, is filled with graphic noise, while using fglrx. Still, opensource drivers rendering it correctly.

After install it was working great.
Now I'm trying to execute it, from command line and/or icon, but I don't get any message, anything at all...
What can I use to execute it?

Gaming status on ATI

Tested on HD4570

ATI proprietary drivers 10.6, xorg 1.8: it's running, but most of HUD, menus, text are missing or garbaged. Hardly playable. Hangs quite often.

Opensource drivers, with and without KMS: running only with glsl enabled, otherwise kernel OOPS, login screen very garbaged, only few elements and cursor seen, everything other is white.

Kernel 2.6.25-rc6

May someone test proprietary drivers on xorg-1.7? xorg-1.8 is not officially supported.

I'm really new to linux, and I cant get it to install, it keeps saying no installer data could be found. I tried this from running it from /media/SC2-L100-D1 Installer.exe then after I mounted I tried it from the /mnt/cdrom location and still the same thing. I tried to upgrade Wine but it shows I have the latest even though I believe their are more release of wine-1.2 but I can't get it to upgrade. Any suggestions, I'm a complete noob to Linux. So this is a freshly installed box.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04 64 Bit
Kernel: 2.6.32-24-generic
server@server:~$ wine --version
server@server:~$ sudo mount -t udf -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom

I'm still getting the "No installer data could be found. If this problem persists....." issue. I unmounted the drive and remounted with the unhide option.

/dev/sr0 on /mnt/cdrom type udf (ro,unhide,uid=1000,gid=1000)

this is the root contents of the drive

autorun.inf Installer Tome 1.MPQE StarCraft II
disc.ico Installer UI 1.MPQ
Installer.exe Installer UI 2.MPQE

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with wine 1.2 and no patches. Any suggestions?

Wine 1.2 with no patches.

Working on Low

I was able to get SC2 working fine on Fedora 13 with wine 1.2. Disabling mmdevapi caused the installer to crash for me. Having it set on Win XP with the defaults worked fine. The biggest disappointment for me is that shaders and lighting have to be turned to low otherwise there is alot of lag. Other settings like texture video and others can be changed.

Problems with installing the retail version

ITS OUT NOW ... and i cant play it

here is what happens:
i mount the dvd with `mount -o remount,unhide /dev/scd0` so that the hidden files are readable.
but when i start the installer.exe with wine, all that comes out is:

Sound issues

I had this problem in SC2 Beta as well. I am unable to get any audio out of SC2. I have tried to set mmdevapi to "Disable" in the libraries tab as well as leaving it set to its default. I am running Debian Sid with alsa sound driver and the following sound chipset:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)

All audio outside of SC2 works. My window managers audio works great and even World of Warcraft audio works great. For some reason, SC2 doesn't seem to want to play any audio.

This would be excellent news.. can we get more "me too's" or other expereinces? I'm very hesitant to buy the game yet till I'm comfortable that it'll work reasonably well.

My biggest question right now to early-releasers: does it have usable OpenGL now? And how are the graphical comparison (glitches etc) for Medium/High/Extreme shader levels?

Ubuntu 9.10 binary package for Wine with SC2 Login Patch

I have built a binary package of Wine 1.1.43 from a snapshot of the git repo from last night and included the sc2-login patch from the Howto post in this thread. It should be easier to install this than to build it yourself. You may fetch it from my PPA at the following address:

Black flickering

I had black flickering when Shaders or Terrain was not set to low.
I set everything to max and only had to change 2 settings to get rid of the flickering.

The values have to be set to:

shadows=0 (responsible for the shader settings flickering)
preBlendedCreep=1 (responsible for the terrain settings flickering)

in drive_c/users/Username/My Documents/StarCraft II Beta/Variables.txt

-confinecursor=2 Confine mouse cursor to window (for windowed mode)
