What works
I am unable to install steam in Wine 1.5.10 - there are missing fonts - it seems a regression as 1.5.8 is completly fine (both fresh installs, no added fonts)

What does not
The installer as I cannot see the text

What was not tested
the game - i can't see text so couldn't install steam so couldn't play the game

Additional Comments

The game probably works 100% fine if you upgraded wine from a previous version.

However 'out the box' there is missing text in the steam installer in wine 1.5.10 -as you can't see you can't really install the game.... previous wine versions this did not happen (at least 1.5.8 - not tried 1.5.9..)

See a screen shot :

http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41308

I have a Nvidia card if that make a difference, the same thing occurs on Arch Linux and Kubuntu 12.04.

HOWTO

INSTALLATION

For best results, install Civ5 with a clean wine prefix.

If you have the GOTY edition, use winetricks to install vcrun6sp6 prior to installation, otherwise you will receive an error about isskin.dll.

If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Also remember to disable in-game community from Steam.

DirectX 11 does not currently work, use DirectX 9 instead.

Using winetricks to install vcrun2008 and d3dx9_36 are recommended before running the game.

Question about HW texture decoding.
by Yuri Shishenko on Saturday March 30th 2013, 13:30
Latest game version supports hardware texture decoding.
Is possible to use it in wine?
I heard about wrapper that allows to use it in RAGE.
What about Civilization?

crashes on start
by Anton on Tuesday March 5th 2013, 0:31
I install it twice with recomendations above.

Game crashes on start.
open splash window with "choose DX 9"
I choose it and then it crashes with this:
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x0073f07d).

Loading saved games that have mods active.

This is not a wine bug because its reproducable on windows. To load this game need to enable all needed mods in mods settings.

Video Ram size
by Roger Koot on Saturday January 26th 2013, 4:56
This is because the amount of video ram is misdetected.
You can fix this with a Registry-key:
Start regedit
Set HKCU->Software->Wine->Direct3D->VideoMemorySize to the amount of RAM your video card has in MB. (if it doesn't exist, create it as a DWORD)
Sometimes, it helps if you enter a few MB less than the actual amount of RAM. I don't know why

game is always windowed
by Marco on Saturday November 3rd 2012, 20:45
Since a while, the game is always in window mode, not fullscreen.
I tried to look into config.ini and the other .ini files but found nothing irregular.
Any idea ?

Font missing with Wine 1.4
by Ricard Wanderlöf on Wednesday September 12th 2012, 14:21
After reading the comments about success with various versions, I tried installing Civilization V (game of the year edition + Gods and Kings expansion) under Wine-1.4 using winetricks. (Also, the current Ubuntu repository plays nicely with Debian Squeeze which is helpful as I don't get a bunch of unfulfilled dependencies during the Wine installation).

Installation went well, with winetricks automatically adding overides and disables, and the game itself starts fine (albeit without the introduction video as was to be expected from other reports). However, some font is missing or other problem; for instance in the game proper, the left part of the menu line is missing (and un-mouse-over-able), whereas the right part with the Turn no, HELP and MENU is present. I've tried installing Tahoma with winetricks, and also increasing the number of possible open files in /etc/security/limits.conf (which got me from a state with no meny line at all to at least the right hand part).

Haven't seen anyone else having this problem though.

graphic problems
by DaZzZuG on Sunday September 9th 2012, 16:06
Hi, I've been running into some troubles regarding Civ5 on Fedora17 (32bit PAE). In addition: I'm running this on a i7 870 with a gtx 560 (driver version: 304.37).

I figured out, that depending on the graphic settings, I get some glsl and d3d error messages until the game crashes at some point.
The higher the settings, especially fog of war and the onverlay, the faster I get the following errors:

err:d3d_shader:set_glsl_shader_program >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from Find glsl program uniform locations @ glsl_shader.c / 4479
err:d3d_shader:set_glsl_shader_program >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB(programId) @ glsl_shader.c / 4492

err:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_select >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB @ glsl_shader.c / 4657
...

err:d3d_surface:surface_upload_data >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_VALUE (0x501) from glTexSubImage2D @ surface.c / 2381

After these errors some 2d graphics, e.g. the portrait of the engineer or the background in the main menu, are not displayed and just left black.

I'm using a clean wine prefix just with d3dx9 & vcrun2008 (I even skipped the stuff from steam) installed.
Wine is set up on win xp and a virtual desktop of 1920x1080 (because I'm using 2 monitors with a different resolution) is configured.

To be honest: I don't have any idea what's causing this problem.
Maybe someone here can help me. :)

Wine 1.5.11, game won't install..
by Mariano on Thursday August 23rd 2012, 22:34
Hi, the game was working perfectly under 1.4, but do to some sound issues with other games I decided to update to 1.5.11 (the other night, actually). Getting past the fonts issue with Steam in this version I proceded to install Civ V again, and after it aknowledges all the files are there, it starts the "finishing install" routine, but stops at 1% with a "Steam has busy servers and can't finish your request" error. That's when I run it as XP. If I try 7, it just says "you need administrator permits to finish this download" and ask to restart Steam, but never gets past that point. Right now it's too much of a hustle to go back to 1.4, so I'll try to figure it out, but I'm really not much of a programmer, so if anyone more savy has any ideas, please send them. :)

Bad preformance - no driver update
by Piotr Siwik on Sunday August 19th 2012, 6:29
Game runs when I use hints from this site (thanks a lot people!) but performance is noticeably lower then on Windows 7. It's so bad that it's not worth playing at all. I've tried to update the drivers but after that the game crashes after initial loading screen. Driver updated even makes some other glitches with my Ubuntu 12.04

I've nVidia and I've updated drivers through terminal, both through standard command and after adding x.org server to the list. Either way, it's buggy so I stick to the original driver. Is it Wine or Ubuntu issue?

1.5.10 regression - missing fonts in steam installer
by yossarianuk on Tuesday August 7th 2012, 6:50
I have tried to install Steam with wine 1.5.10 and am not able to as I cannot
see certain fonts (so i cannot see text)

As a test I downgraded to 1.5.8 and the issue is not present.

This is the same on Arch Linux (64) and Kubuntu 12.04 - both 1.5.10 the issue is present, with 1.5.8 its gone...

Screenshot

bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41308

I don;t thing its a missing fonts as 1.5.8 works and I do not add any fonts...

Segfault on startup
by Everdras on Thursday July 19th 2012, 4:34
I'm running 64bit Arch Linux, and I'm using PlayOnLinux installed from the AUR.

I'm using a Samsung RV711, with an intel i3 (dual core) @2.5GHz per core. 4 gigs of RAM. i915 integrated graphics kernel driver. I do meet min specs for the game.

Steam runs fine.

I have installed the following packages via winetricks:
d3dx9
d3dx9_36
msvc(r)90
msxml3
vcrun2008

When I click "Play" in Steam, the game doesn't even flash up for a moment, I immediately see the "fatal error, etc etc" message and this is printed to the console:

Following the crash, Steam usually refuses to do anything other than ding at me when I try to interact with it. I am forced to kill it.

Any ideas? I've been reading and googling, and even ended up reading a few threads from a French forum (bilingual, yeah!) with no luck.

Title bar and City screen do not appear
by Pentalis on Thursday June 28th 2012, 12:53
System Tested: Debian Squeeze (aka: Stable)
GCC version: 4.4
WINE versions tested (all compiled from scratch): 1.5.7, 1.5.5, 1.4.1, 1.3.26
GRAPHICAL drivers tested: NVIDIA proprietary drivers version 295.59 and 295.53
Computer specs: Athlon X4 640, GeForce 550 Ti, 4 GB RAM

Bug:
Every time I try to run Civilization V, it runs, but when I start playing, the title bar does not appear and when I found a city, I do not get a city screen. Example:
imageshack.us/f/839/scivilizationvdx9.png/

Some other screens do not appear and I noticed that sometimes other civs do not have voice and they never get their overlay menu either.

What I have tested:
--winetricks dxd9_36 and vcrun2008, with and without them (aka: vanilla Wine), with every Wine version with the latest NVIDIA driver, as well as with most of these versions with the previous driver (295.53).
--I have tried reinstalling Civilization V from scratch from a backup and even redownloading from the web.
--I also tested completely deleting the wine prefix and starting again from scratch (at least 2 times).
--Also tested with Civilization Gods and Kings demo.
--I even tried disabling the CoreGameThreading in the config.ini file (as suggested in the Civilization forums).

Console output as I run Civilization V (this one is from a trial without winetricks, version 1.5.7):

Does anyone else experience this strange glitch?.
Only _ONCE_ I managed to get this working, the title bar appeared, things worked; I was testing with the Gods and Kings demo, but the error immediately re-appeared after I returned to the main menu and tried to start a new game.

I've spent days trying everything that comes to mind (except, of course, reinstalling my OS). Other games run correctly. Diablo III runs correctly, HOARD runs correctly, but this doesn't.

Feedback absolutely appreciated.

In 1.5.7 game doesn't work. It shows only loading screen and intro music.
It shows many times message
'err:wgl:is_extension_supported No OpenGL extensions found, check if your OpenGL setup is correct!'
and then
'fixme:iphlpapi:NotifyAddrChange (Handle 0xcd9d95c, overlapped 0xc7566e8): stub
fixme:winsock:WSALookupServiceBeginW (0xcd9da5c 0x00000ff0 0xcd9daa4) Stub!
fixme:ntdll:NtLockFile I/O completion on lock not implemented yet'.
But in 1.5.6 it works fine.

I played Civ5 with wine for a long time now.
Since the Gods & Ko,ks extension, I can't play a game from the beginning to the end. At one moment, not the same year in the game, not the same turn number, the game crash and wine show me a backtrace.
When it append, i can reload a previous saves, i can replay it to the turn number were it crashed, and at the same turn number it crashed again when clicked on "next turn".

Game does not start under wine 1.3.35
by Eric Luckerbau on Tuesday December 27th 2011, 16:46
Launcher.exe crashes under wine 1.3.35, but after I downgraded to wine 1.3.28 it works almost flawlessly. Only problem is the mouse pointer constantly flickering between decorated and un-decorated. (Also the intro movie was missing, and the game takes quite long to start, but these are minor problems.)

Ubuntu 11.10 on 64-bit, and ATI Radeon HD 4770.

And it was a retail DVD which I thought would install the whole game, but instead it downloaded the newly patched Steam version without giving me the possibility to decide whether I want this. (So it would have made more sense buying it from Steam directly.)

And I'm running everything out of the box, no DLL overrides and extra installs, only Steam's in-game community is disabled. (Though I haven't tried what would happen if not.)

No sound in wine
by James on Wednesday December 7th 2011, 15:48
Hi there,

I am using latest Ubuntu 11.10, latest wine 1.3.34 and latest Steam.

I don't get any sound in Civ 5 (and other games I've tried) using Steam. Frustratingly, the test sound works as part of the winealsa.drv, so something must be working.

In older versions of wine I'm sure I tried other sound drivers but I can't do that on this latest version. Do I need to download OSS and use this instead?

In all other respects Civ 5 works perfectly - just no sound! (In the past it has worked flawlessly)

I'd be grateful for any help.

Many thanks,

James

Missing land textures with Intel integrated graphics

Is anyone else seeing the game rendered with the land textures missing, so it looks like units are floating in the water, when using Intel integrated graphics? Everything else works fine, including the GUI and strategic view.

This is with all recent versions of Wine (currently on 1.3.34), Intel Sandybridge graphics, Ubuntu 10.10, X.org/Mesa from git head courtesy the XOrg Edgers PPA.

Intro
by Jeffrey Thomas Piercy on Friday December 2nd 2011, 23:06
That ~20 second wait time even if the intro movie is disabled isn't a Wine bug -- it's the same on Windows. Civ V just has a long loading time, which is why the long intro exists in the first place.

Multiplayer saves.
by J on Wednesday September 14th 2011, 14:51
If you want to be able to participate in games that were loaded from a save in multiplayer then use Wine 1.3.20. On Wine 1.3.26 (the other one I've tested) muliplayer works, but *only* if you are starting a new game, you can *not* participate in one that was loaded from a save, regardless of whenever you are hosting or not.

Also, the game refuses to work for me on a clean prefix, by either giving me "incomplete installation (55)" or "incomplete installation (2)" error. Here are the winetricks that I have installed on my main prefix:

crypt32, d3dx9, d3dx10, d3dxof, devenum, directmusic, directplay, directx9, dmsynth, dxdiag, dxdiagn, l3codecx, mfc42, msasn1, msxml6, quartz, winhttp, wininet, xact, xinput

With this it runs perfectly. (Albeit a little sluggish.) All of these are *not* required to run it, but I'm too lazy to actually bother checking which ones are.

wine-1.3.27 - breaks civ5 - ArchLinux (64bit)
by yossarianuk on Tuesday August 30th 2011, 4:17
wine-1.3.26 played civ5 fine - I could install and play the steam version out the box (i.e I needed not to install any other components)

When I install 1.3.27 I am not able to load civ5 from steam, wine crashes and I have to manually kill the process.

Downgrading to wine 1.3.26 I can play again fine.

Athlon64-X2
Nvidia geforce 450 GTS
Arch linux 64 (using the 32bit wine version)

If it helps here is the output on the console.

Regards

Mouse Cursor constantly flickers between Desktop + Civ5's...
by yossarianuk on Sunday August 14th 2011, 10:42
Hi

I have Nvidia 450GTS - latest Nvidia driver (280-13) - latest wine (1.3.26).

Game works really well - I did not have to even bother installing dx9 or vcrun2008 to get it to work.

I am having one issue that is effecting both Arch Linux(64) and ubuntu 11.04 x86 :-

When in full screen when ever I move the mouse the mouse cursor it constantly changes between Civ5's and the Desktop (in both gnome2 + kde4)

Its not a major issue - just annoying...

Does anyone know of a way I can force it to stick to one cursor??

New to wine trouble installing
by Jesse on Sunday April 24th 2011, 21:54
Okay so when I try to install I get the install menu but the install and exit buttons are right justified instead of centered. Then when I accept the terms it says installing Directx9 and then says its connecting to my steam account then it quits.

I'm running openSUSE 11.4 (which I'm also new to linux)
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Black screen
by rob on Sunday March 27th 2011, 10:52
I get the sound, but my screen is totally black.

I tried turning off the intro movie in the .ini file hoping that it would work after that, but it still doesn't work and I can't play at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks

civ 5, wine 1.3.12, Steam, Ubuntu 10.10
by jonesy on Monday January 24th 2011, 7:07
It works. Sound died after ~200 turns at marathon speed.

I mostly used the excellent info from ubuntugamer.com, but forgot to use a prefix - I had Steam installed in 10.4 (never used), updated it and downloaded Civ 5 (I have an install on a Win7 laptop.) I disabled the Steam community stuff, started the game, saved and closed, took Steam off-line, then re-started Civ.

Also, I updated playonlinux and have these plugins: advanced wine cfg., capture, detour, wine import, and wine look. If I recall rightly, I used pol to take wine from *.11 to .12 and to install some more fonts. Winetricks is also installed but I don't remember using anything specific from it apart from what it installs itself.

Initially, sound failed somewhere around "Begin your journey." I added a checkmark against OSS sound (and left ALSA checked - a burst of stupidity) - and had sound as said above.

Default wine app settings are for XP; I added CivilizationV.exe and set for Win7. The only existing over-ride in the library is *msvcr90 (default, built-in.) AFAIK, all other Wine settings are default.

My video card is an nVidia (forgot brand) 8800GT with all default setting and it's DX9 only.

Rig is a home-built, a Gigabyte board (sorry, I'm not rebooting or opening the box for the model), AMD Phenom 9350e, and 8GB RAM.

Overall visuals and speed of play, so far, are better than on the Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7016 with a Turion II P520, Radeon Mobility 4200 HD and 4GB RAM running Win7 x64.

No intro movie but the rulers move and talk.

Selecting "Play game" from Steam often cycles "starting civ...." at least several times; haven't tried launcher.exe in apps folder.

Sorry for the long post. I hope this might help.

Threading issues?
by Julian Ritchie on Friday December 31st 2010, 9:06
Hi
So after some back and forth with installing I get Civ 5 to run properly in 1.2, this is after trying 1.3 and having no luck.

I started it up multiple time, to adjust settings and recover from one crash.

It crashed again and has decided not to work since. When it was crashed my cpu usage was 100% on one processor and 20% on another.

I have since tried many many times to get it to run on both 1.2 and 1.3 (switched to fix the terrain issue mentioned below) but it doesn't get past the launcher.

When I hit launcher it opens it and then closes and reopens it, and repeats seemingly forever, unless I change my open window. The interesting this is each iteration of the launcher again seems to only be loading one core, generally alternating between them.

Wondering if anyone else had noticed this, had a fix, or wanted to let me know what data you want so you can understand better please reply.

by Darrin on Sunday December 26th 2010, 8:13
All of the graphics look good except for the land/terrain itself. It is bumpy with lines through it. This exact problem was posted for an ATI card, but I have an Nvidia card.

Slackware-64 13.1
Wine 1.2.2
Nvidia 8800GT Nvidia driver version 260.19.29

Any ideas?

Crashes when getting contacted by civilizations?
by billywilly on Sunday November 28th 2010, 3:38
lately things have started getting very tiresome for me with regards to this game, as now the game crashes when other civs try to contact me etc, but not all civilizations, just some...what happens is the game freezes and i have to reboot..

also i have another problem, i cannot play beyond a certain stage as it then crashes, ive so far stuck to small world size, but even that crashes when i hold about half the world...anyone know how i can solve this?

also, anyone got the map editor function working?

by Lilltiger on Thursday October 28th 2010, 17:56
Just downloaded steam, bought Civ5, downloaded and installed it.

But the game wont start throught steam, but if i start it from the folder where steam installed it steam starts up, upgrades the game and then runs it. Still the Intro dosent work, but i just skip it.

OSX, 1.3.3, not even installing
by Simone on Thursday October 21st 2010, 0:25
I've been trying to install it for quite a few hours. I have the european (steam) installation.

The problem seems to be in mshtml or some other dll used to display embedded HTML in various places of steam.

As opposed to what wrote here, the steam client on the CD works as much as the one downloaded from the internet.

I managed to get both steam clients to login my account quite easily. But then steam tries to display HTML (to display news) and crashes.

The steam installer from the CD starts the installation of the game before actually displaying the news, but unfortunately uses some embedded HTML to display license agreement, and crashes.

I tried to winetrick a lot of stuff, configure libraries to be natives, in different configurations starting from scratch every time, but found no way around the embedded html crash.

Anyone has anything to suggest?

Doesn't Work at all for me
by Ryan Estep on Wednesday October 20th 2010, 8:44
I downloaded the files from the Steam client, but every time I try to run the program, I get this error in the terminal.

err:seh:setup_exception_record stack overflow 1156 bytes in thread 003f eip 681b5231 esp 00240eac stack 0x240000-0x241000-0x340000

Anyone know a way to fix this? I am pretty new with Wine so its probably something I overlooked. I did install most of the winetricks stuff, and all of the modules that I saw mentioned in the forum posts.

Save Game decided to stop working
by Dan on Sunday October 17th 2010, 11:23
Using Linux Mint 9 and Wine 1.3.5.

I've installed the game via steam and it runs fine. Saving the game to either the steam cloud or locally has stopped working though. This has happened twice (after the first time I wiped it and started again - only to get the same problem).

The game allows me to load from the steam cloud but shows a blank list if I try to save. It wont allow me to save locally either...

As I say, it runs perfectly otherwise. Any ideas?

Presumably its something to do with permissions?

Cheers,
Dan

think it's a driver issue

I think the issue is the driver in ubuntu maverick, if you've upgraded to that :/

Civ5 SDK (WorldBuilder)
by pokipoki08 on Saturday October 16th 2010, 0:25
Anyone managed to get the SDK to work?

I installed the Windows version of MONO (mono-2.8-gtksharp-2.12.10-win32-9.exe) but it didn't work. Read somewhere it's a limitation of WINE, only can support up to mono ver. 2.6.

btw: here's my protocol to get Civ5 working under slackware 13.1

winetricks d3dx9 vcrun6 vcrun6sp6 vcrun2003 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010

don't install directx or vcrun2008 from the game dvd

winetricks ddr=opengl (higher refresh rate)

to use anti-aliasing, enabled multi-sampling (winetricks multisampling=enabled) in Wine and use the "override Application Settings" option in the NVIDIA Settings.

winetricks orm=backbuffer (better frame rate, but not much)

may need to refresh resource/yield icons (near minimap) after starting/loading a new/saved game

game crashes PC after 10-50 turns
by Jonas Obrist on Monday October 11th 2010, 13:25
I play civ v on wine 1.3.4 on ubuntu 10.10 x64 with an nvidia gfx card. After playing some turns (about 10-50) the game kills my notebook forcing me to ctrl+alt+backspace or in some cases even forcing a shutdown by holding power key. While it's not crashing it plays wonderfully. Also most of the time the crashes happen shortly after sound dies. I run steam through padsp to get any sound at all.

Graphics/terrain problem.
by billywilly on Friday October 8th 2010, 5:04
i am using Wine 1.2 and are having some graphics issues:

img834.imageshack.us/img834/9598/screenshot3zp.png

you can see the "lines" in the terrain..by the way i dont know why it gave me a black square in the middle, i am guessing its the screen shot thing,,

now here is a "normal" picture of CIV 5 from google:

civilization5.indews.com/images/indews_civ5_scrshot1.jpg

anyone know what the problem might be?

here are my specs:

Intel duo: E5200 2.5gz
Ati Raedon 4850HD
3gb RAM
400 chiftec PSU (i saw on another thread that its recommended to have atleast 450PSU for my ati card, but so far ive not had any problems)

my graphics card at 25% fan speed is currently around 50-55c so its not that hot..

could it be some driver issue as i had to install this one ( support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU83ATICatalystLinuxHotfix.aspx ) after a update messed up my drivers.

any help would be great...

Game starts, but not able to play...
by Eric on Sunday October 3rd 2010, 13:30
I bought Civ V today via Steam.
I can run the game and I see the menus. Strangely, if I choose single player - Set Up Game - I have options to change type Map, Map size, difficulty level, etc ... but I have no choice available to the leader that I want! ? I just have the option "random leader" ...
Then if I click to start the game, nothing happens.
Do I forget something I should do?
I use Debian / Squeeze with Wine 1.3.3.
Thank you for your help.

Random log out
by lachose on Sunday October 3rd 2010, 5:14
The game work fine with ubuntu 10.04 x64, wine 1.3.4 and Nvidia driver v 195.36.24. However it logs me out of ubuntu with no warning once in a while. This seems to happen randomly after less than 50 turns. Anyone else having this problem?

WINE 1.3.4 and terrain problems
by besson3c on Saturday October 2nd 2010, 16:05

Downloading Mods?
by John on Saturday October 2nd 2010, 13:22
I noticed that I am unable to download Mods via the in-game interface, with the game complaining that "the Microsoft BITS service could not be started." I googled around and it looks like wine should have a working BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) implementation -- I even tried starting it myself before the game ran with 'net start bits', but it didn't seem to help. Anyone else had success?

Sound issue here too
by Tom on Friday October 1st 2010, 21:13
I am impressed with how well this does run with no help at all. Installs fine and played fine after first run. Only issue I am having is the sound will just stop working at some point. Not getting a crashing sound, it just quits. Only screwed up one other time other then that. When I attacked someone's town that I had Open Borders with (which I believe is not possible, it should kick you out at the point you declare war?) It crashed and then corrupted the entire saved game and would not let me save the game once bringing up an older save of it. But the sound is my only real concern. Ubuntu 10.04 and wine 1.3.3

SDK & Map Editor
by Simon Ceder on Thursday September 30th 2010, 3:10
Anyone have any luck starting the map editor? You can get it from Steam: Library->Tools->Civ V SDK. For me it crashes on startup.

Cloud updates crash and sound cuts out
by Matt Helsley on Sunday September 26th 2010, 2:15
Configuration: Wine 1.2 (precise version unknown) and 1.3.3 on Ubuntu Lucid's 2.6.32-24-generic kernel with the NVIDIA driver packages built via dkms showing version 260.19.06.

Needed d3dx9 winetricks package. Running with "cloud updates" enabled seemed to cause it to crash before loading. Disabling that seems to fix the problem. At least during the tutorials sound cuts out after the first few sentences of the text describing your "leader". After this even quitting the game won't restore sound. Only restarting Steam after running:

pulseaudio -k

seems to restart sound so that I can repeat the expirement. Fiddling with OpenAL-Soft Configuration Utility and moving the Pulse and ALSA backends up the list seemed to improve things slightly. It get's to finish showing the map for the first time before cutting out again.

X errors? try updating video card drivers
by dan on Friday September 24th 2010, 21:16
Works great for me in Ubuntu Lucid after updating my NVIDIA video card drivers to 256.53 . I was getting lots of X errors (bad drawable, insufficient resources, etc.) while running the older 1xx.xx drivers.

This also fixed a problem I had with Steam running really slow, so, yay!

Working on OSX under 1.3.3
by ygolohcysp on Friday September 24th 2010, 20:34
I've had success installing and playing the retail game on a 2008-era macbook pro.

Installed wine-devel and winetricks from macports 1.9.1.
Installed all of the d3dx9 variants from winetricks.

Game can sit at a white screen for awhile before starting; I postulate the intro movies aren't showing up.

Terrain often shows up grey, though city names and unit icons overlay properly. Strategic view works fine, though.

Running wine in a 1280x800 virtual desktop, and then having Civ5 run windowed (also) at 1280x800 (fullscreen UNchecked) fixed the grey terrain tiles initially, though they reappeared on some subsequent runs.

I've managed to get the the terrain to appear properly somewhat consistently by: a) running the game, going to options off the main menu, turning ON full-screen, then quitting; b) running the game again (which now starts fullscreen), going to options, and turning fullscreen back OFF; c) starting/loading a game.

Maybe someone can find an easier way.

Note that when switching between windowed/fullscreen there's sometimes a bug where it doesn't recalibrate the mouse position properly, so you have to click 'below' some ui elements.

Hope that helps someone.

Status check
by Samu Voutilainen on Friday September 24th 2010, 16:22
Please post new information (not already in this thread) about status of the CivV, that I can forge proper HOWTO for installing.

My notes: With my main profile, CivV worked out of the box, but sounds shuttered. There's just too much stuff, though.

Installing to completely clean overlay, I needed to install directx9 in order to get dx loading errors go away. Since this is not directly install but copy from Windows machine, I needed to copy dx9_42 to same dir with game exe.

Game runs again, with proper sounds, creating new game works.

Loading old game with Open Game does not, has anyone else experienced this?

Retail-version with Sept 24th update
by Richard Peng on Friday September 24th 2010, 11:33
I also couldn't start the game anymore after the update and reinstalled the game into a new wine 1.3.3 profile with no winetricks. Everything works great for me with the latest update.

Retail-version not starting
by Aapo Alasuutari on Friday September 24th 2010, 9:32
I just bought the actual game (physical copy) and installed it.
Earlier I had run the demo version without any problems.

Unfortunately, now with the full version I am unable to start the game. Trying to start it from Steam fails with no errors, starting it from command line using the actual exe outputs the following:
pastebay.com/105441

(Do not mind the 00000008 backtrace, that's just Spotify. Killing it didn't change anything.)

Anyone have any idea what's causing this? Anyone else ran into the same problem?
My specs are as follow:
ArchLinux, kernel 2.6.35.5-1, nvidia-beta 260.19.06-1, wine 1.3.3-2
Intel Core i7 960, 3.2GHz
EVGA nVidia GeForce GTX 480
4 GiB of RAM

Game worked fine up to now.
As of Sept 24th in the morning, I get the following error ::

Unhandled exception: page fault on write access to 0x209df3d4 in 32-bit code (0x00793c9d).

Using wine 1.33 with suggested overrerides.
My guess is Steam autopatched the game somehow to make it compatible with Euro release.

Here is the complete wine console stack ::

Intro movie?
by Daniel Neugebauer on Friday September 24th 2010, 5:35
I've just read about an intro movie in Steam forums, didn't install and test natively in Windows yet. The main directory contains wmv files called Civ5_Opening_Movie_${LOCALE}.wmv, so I guess it's really not playing? Is it just for me or everyone else as well?

I think there are no other movies in-game (at least I've got no other wmv files), so it's no big problem if it doesn't play but it may be noted for those who miss it?

Game doesn't start
by Matthew Swaringen on Thursday September 23rd 2010, 22:29
pastebin.com/PM6pBC3y
OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 260.19.04
2.6.35-02063504-generic
wine-1.3.3-181-ge4182ea

Closest I've got is a black screen before it drops out. This was with installing directx9 (and making sure only 24-42 were set native as other people have specified here), along with riched20/30 & msxml3,4,6 and msvcr2008 (installed via steam and via winetricks).

Not sure what else to try.

Runs fine under 1.3.3, not under 1.2
by Andrei on Tuesday September 21st 2010, 22:11
kubuntu 10.04. With wine 1.3.3 and winecfg I used for Civ IV and Eve Online:
d3dx9_24-42 native
gdiplus native
msvcr80 native builtin
msvcr90 native builtin
msxml3,4,6 native builtin
riched20,32 native builtin
No overrides
nVidia 256.35 on 2.6.32-24 kernel
AMD II X2 250

Runs good, looks good, no visible problems yet. Played a demo for a little bit.

Under wine 1.2 with same settings, I got horrible looking terrain (unsmoothed, very jagged)

Okay, under OS X WINE 1.3.3 seems to work while WINE 1.2 doesn't. However, all of the game's terrain is gray and unusable. A friend of mine was able to reproduce the same thing using the commercial OS X Crossover package.
